Do you take care of your daily hygiene? Did you take care of your hygiene online?

Reading Time: 4 minutes

First of all, have you ever been thinking about, how many “fingerprints” you left in the Internet? I can ensure you that there are more than you think. No matter what you do on your device which is connected to the internet, it leaves data. By using the word “data” I mean all the activities you do on the Web, or on the device which will be connected to the Web in the future, and which can be scaled into information.  Data is also the moment when your and your friend’s smartphone are present during meetings. It is also some kind of information. The another info from your one meeting is that how much time you spend together, for how long you spend it without each other, even where do you spend it (as long as you allow the device to track you). That data is used by all of the companies connected somehow with the advertising market. (eg. Facebook, Google, Yahoo).

Here are some examples of how to avoid sharing information that concerns you.:

THE FIRST, THE EASIEST.

Find in the settings of your net browser, the history of the browser and cookies tab, and clear it. If you use smartphone check out in the settings of the phone, all the permissions that the apps have. Sometimes when you install for example, a flashlight, it asks you to allow the app to use your contacts or messages, microphone, or even access to camera (not the led light). Feels strange, isn’t it? You can always disallow it in the settings of the app or just uninstall an app from your smartphone.

THE SECOND, YOU WILL NEED A TAPE.

Sometimes it happens that your device is infected by some kind of spy malware.

According to Wikipedia:

“Malware is any software intentionally designed to cause damage to a computer, server, client, or computer network. Malware does the damage after it is implanted or introduced in some way into a target’s computer and can take the form of executable code, scripts, active content, and other software.”

But what about this tape. One kind of malware is the spy malware, it is using the cameras, microphones in your laptops. As it is difficult to fight with eavesdroppers, it’s so easy to fight with voyeurs by taping by the sticker on the camera of your device. This method is really good idea of fighting with malware is the first step of being “healthy” in the Web.

THE THIRD, PAY BY CASH.

The credit/debit cards since they exist are really hot products. In Poland, there is a trend to pay for everything by credit/debit cards. Now in connection with what I wrote above, think about how much data you leave on one Friday evening. Your bank knows how much you spend the money, for what you spend, is it just one night or it is your week rhythm. Thanks to that info in someday your loan request can be rejected because Bank will not give the loan to the person who provides that type of lifestyle. They will not say strict in that way, but people who were working in that field says about it. The way how to avoid this data scalping process is really easy, pay by cash.

THE FOURTH, JUST BE A KIND PERSON.

Whenever you go for a party there is a moment when people grab their smartphones and take the photos of themselves or of the other people. Remember that sometimes metadata is scalped even by your default app camera on your smartphone. By using word “metadata” I mean the time or the location, where the photo was taken. You can easily turn it off. But what about that kindness which I was writing about above. After or during the party some people feel a real need to share it on some social media. Predominantly on the photo, there are more people than the person who uploads it. The first, I mean the obligatory, step is to ask these people for the permission of uploading it online. You will be treated better in the future by them, because they will see that you care about their safety in the Web and that you are kind person.

On the other hand, some people are agreeing for all of these things, that I was warning you from. That because of the self-comfort. We need to accept it. But for all others, keep trying to abide by the principles of the self-hygiene on the Web.

What is my view about this?

We don’t have to be scared of using devices that are connected to the Internet, but always remember, that these products can scalp data in a way that we never wanted. Just try to be more hygienic online and your life can be better.

Walking cars

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Recently South Korean company that produced a cars called Hyundai introduce their new concept about cars called Elevate. The vehicle is equipped with a robotics legs and can be used independently of weather conditions or terrain of the landscapes.

On Wednesday the company released a new image of a technique and several days later Hyundai  presented  a little prototype of the vehicle.

On the annual electronics convention company shared a video that give a brief introduction on how the invention can be used, for which purposes it was created and what kinds of problems it can solve.

The innovation can be used in different spheres of life. As an example, the it can be used by an ordinary people that live in the areas of frequent snowfalls, it can decrease the traffic congestion and the rate of accidence on the road.

Also, during some accidence like cave-in in mountains the cars can be used as an ambulance that is able to get directly to the affected person that require an immediate help despite any kind of terrain, without extra movements of humans bodies which in turn help to avoid some unpleasant consequences.

Another idea is to use this vehicle as a taxi. It would be useful for people with disabilities because thanks to the  robotic  legs a car can pick up a person mostly from everywhere. It is quite effective especially when there is no contraction for disabled for instance a ramp.

Overall, the possibilities of usage of the machine are limitless.

Decentralization available for everyone ~ by hyperledger

Reading Time: 2 minutes

„Blockchain can do for business the same what internet did for communication”

The general purpose why we want to use blockchain solutions is that we want a fair trading. We want fair interactions without  any „guys” between. First example we have faced  was blockchain in currency system in a form of bitcoin. Later on, the ethereum was on the horizon with it’s concept of „decentralizing everything”.

Next years was a time when people started to speculate on bitcoin and everything became so famous. Geeks all around the world started to create their own platforms based on blockchain and ensuring this one is going to be another phenomen just like bitcoin was. Of course non of launched solutions didn’t become as popular as bitcoin.

Next years of blockchain revolution were focusing on it’s implementation in daily usage and this trend lasts till now. In order to make it widely available for the average user it must be implemented in the small-medium bussines sector.    Such an implementation is possible only if, this technology is accesible and potentialy easy to learn for everyone. Make it understable nad implementable by average owner of the business is what emphasises the key point.

Solution that can potentialy familiarize creating blockchain with wider audience is Hyperledger.

Hyperledger is a platform hosted by The Linux Foundation and constantly improving by innovators from all around the globe in areas of finance, banking, healthcare, IOT, supply chain, manufacturing and technology.

It is challenging to explain what exactly hyperledger is casue it is a platform which consits of many projects that can be defferenciate into two groups of frameworks and tools.

Hyperledger projects are so special, because they allow you to implement blockchain to your organization in much easier way, than any pevious solution.

Before, we talk a bit more about certain projects, I want you to know that their main site is full of  treasury information. There are tables with e.g. community section where you can learn the basics about hyperledger, join a meetup with members or even become a coder in one of their projects. In  resources table you can find webinars, videos, trainings , tutorials on how to use it.

This video shows main projects run on hyperledger platform.

I think it is just worth to familiarize with hyperledger especially, if that is a solution with a great potential to become widely available and usefull in day to day business.

Lifelikeness virtual characters in Fortnite

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Digital humanoid characters in games industry are becoming more and more realistic, but  emotions on their faces come across as artificial and still leave something to be desired. Gamers are expecting to see game figures as something similar to film pictures and it is the challenge in itself. However, Epic Games started to face up this challenge.

Few days ago Epic Games declared that they will implement new system of emotion and movement projection. It is possible thanks to cooperation with company called 3Lateral.

Tim Sweeney, Epic Games CEO announce that :

“Real-time 3D experiences are reshaping the entire entertainment industry, and digital human technology is at the forefront. Fortnite shows that 200,000,000 people can experience a 3D world together. Reaching the next level requires capturing, personalizing, and conveying individual human faces and emotions”

The 3Lateral studio specialises in 3D object scanning and transferring realistic motion into computer program. Besides that the company work on face rigging and character modelling using  simulation process. This is exactly what Epic Games needs. The most important thing to the Fortnite creator is to express real feeling to humanoid characters in the game. That’s why Epic Games gathered over 60 differentiated people to reflect behaviour of every race, gender and nation. Participant will be observed by sensors and cameras on every corner. The system will scan people’s acts, emotions on their faces or even throwing grenades action. The 3Lateral studio gives also possibility to scan body in clothes used in the game, thanks to that we can notice even small fold on costume while playing computer game.

Cooperation with Epic Games gives the opportunity to grow to the 3Lateral. Founder of 3Lateral development Vladimir Mastilovic expressed his view about their chance to grow:

“Observing, analysing and reconstructing these mechanisms has always fascinated us at 3Lateral, and we are excited to have joined a like-minded team at Epic Games with such strong desire to solve this near impossible problem.”

The video game market has a lot potential all around the world and number of gamers is still growing. That’s why graphic designers are doing everything they can to improve quality and make characters more realistic

TINDER IN TROUBLE

Reading Time: 3 minutes

As a lot of us probably know,  love can be tough sometimes and doesn’t bring only happiness.  Tinder, the father of love, also just got to realize this fact as they’ve been charged 23$ milion for discriminating people over 30 years old. As the saying goes “there are equals and more equal than others”, however little did I know that it concerns also the aspect of love.

Znalezione obrazy dla zapytania tinder discrimination

It all starts with a plaintiff Lisa Kim who filed the case in a California court last April, on behalf of 230,000 other class members. She realized that people aged under 29 were charged a $9.99 for monthly using the application’s premium option, Tinder Plus, while those over 30, twice as much.  The service which was introduced in 2015, enabled users for a boarder access to its features such as additional number of Super Likes or the ability to rewind swipes. At the time, Tinder explained their pricing model by comparison to Spotify’s discounts for students. They claimed that the tiers’s price is due to the smaller financial possibilities of the younger users. In a statement to NPR, Tinder defended the model by the following:

“Over the past few months, we’ve tested Tinder Plus extensively in several countries. We’ve priced Tinder Plus based on a combination of factors, including what we’ve learned through our testing, and we’ve found that these price points were adopted very well by certain age demographics. Lots of products offer differentiated price tiers by age, like Spotify does for students, for example. Tinder is no different; during our testing we’ve learned, not surprisingly, that younger users are just as excited about Tinder Plus but are more budget constrained and need a lower price to pull the trigger.”

https://www.npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/2015/03/02/390236051/tinders-premium-dating-app-will-cost-you-more-if-youre-older?t=1548517322455

However there is one gap in Tinder’s defence, the rate is set only by age classification, not educational status. You could be a 32 year’s old student and anyway you would pay 19.99$ for the premium option.

Znalezione obrazy dla zapytania tinder discrimination

SETTLEMENT

The case ends up with Tinder settling a $23 million class-action age discrimination lawsuit. However it may surprise you the way of distribution this money. For dropping the claims, the application will reward each class member with 50 Super Likes, which is equivalent to 50$. Additionally, those who were charged more, can submit a claim for $25 in cash, 25 more super likes or a one-month subscription to Tinder Plus or Tinder Gold (depending on what they previously purchased).  Summarizing, this makes $11.5 million to 230,000 class members as well as $5.75 million in potential cash or cash-equivalents. What’s more, Tinder will stop on discriminatory charge of older users, however only in California. This carries a value of about $5.75 million and amounts to a $23 million settlement.

INTERNAL DISPUTES

Tinder’s co-founders are currently suing its parent companies Match Group and IAC for lowering Tinder’s valuation and taking away stock options, and contained in that lawsuit are claims of rampant sexism and sexual harassment.

Do you think Tinder has been properly punished and should redress those who were charged more because of their age? Or that the afore-mentioned issue has been completely inflated and organised only to gain money?

Goodbye Notch!

Reading Time: 3 minutes

iPhone X when announced has created a big controversy. It featured a whole front display with a little gap at the top, nowadays we call it a Notch. Some call it a big step back in smartphone’s design, others a necessary evil. We know one thing for sure, it has created a new design trend for over 2 years. Quickly after iPhone X release other manufacturers have followed. It seems that we wanted to increase the display area so much that we did it without second thoughts about smartphone’s front components such as camera, speaker, microphone and sensors. But what if someone decides to go against the notch trend? That is exactly what happened with a Samsung flagship model Galaxy S9. On the first sight it looks clean, screen area seems big enough and lack of notch does not make it look “old”. But Martin Hajek, a graphic designer wanted to know how it would look like with a notch. The result was outstanding. Samsung S9 appeared to had even narrower bezels than iPhone X. So we know that Notch makes smartphones more sleek, futuristic and attractive to customer. But what is a next step? Of course notch has to go, there is no place for him in all-display future of smartphones. Can we put front components under display? Not yet. There were attempts to avoid a notch but I do not think they are to stay. One of such an attempt we can observe in OPPO Find X. Chinese giant created a camera and sensors that pop up from the top of the smartphone. It allows to achieve an amazing 93.8% screen-to-body ratio.

There is a controversy about time needed for mechanism to pop up, scan your face and descend in order to unlock your phone. People are also not convinced about durability of this mechanism with users that use their camera often. Nevertheless we have to congratulate OPPO for trying to avoid notch. With 2019 comes new alternative for a notch – a hole punch camera! It was implemented in Honor view 20 and it looks amazing. It looks like a far more reasonable compromise than an intrusive notch and more trustworthy than OPPO pop-up camera solution. We still have one of the biggest screen-to-body ratio and a front facing camera. In Honor View 20, OS still recognise front camera as a notch so you can put virtual bezels when watching full screen video. To be honest this is going to be a trend that grows in popularity in 2019, at least until we figure out how to hide camera under display. What do you think about OPPO, Honor and notch? What do you think about the future of notch smartphones?

The biggest problem of the ecommerce fashion industry

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Year by year we can observe a huge increases in fashion sales. Online sales are slowly becoming the most important part of fashion companies’ revenues. But the Internet creates kind of a wall, which is slowing the whole process and contains us from successful shopping.

In the recent years, fashion and apparel has become the fastest growing e-commerce category and the second largest after consumer electronics, growing form $375.6 billion in 2012 to $481 billion last year. Analysts predicts that the revenue will reach over $700 billion by 2022.

Buying clothes online means that we are not able to try them on and make sure the size fits us. This is why fashion companies have to struggle with a huge percentage of returned products (especially in the winter holiday season), which is something between 30-50% of the whole sales, which causes tremendously high costs connected not only with a return shipping, but also other processes needed to get the product back to the stock. Returns are growing even faster than the revenues, increasing 94.8% over the most recently measured five-year period. Moreover, over 4B pounds of returned apparel end up in landfills annually.

“What we hope to do with technology is make that growth rate slower.” Said Roger Graell, director of e-commerce at Spain’s Mango, which expects to make at least one-fifth of sales online by 2020.

Since 2012 there was plenty of startups which were trying to solve the problem with size fitting. Millions of dollars were invested in projects which were making kind of virtual fitting rooms (Avametric, Fitiquette), 3D scanners (Body Labs, Nettelo) and AI based algorithms (Virtusize, Pixibo). Most of them do not survive these days.

However, in 2016 three Ukrainian engineers created a technology, which allows people to scan their bodies using a smartphone’s camera. Their startup (called 3DLook) is implementing its technology to fashion retailers’ online stores. Thanks to that customers are able to measure themselves by taking 2 photos (from the front and from the side) and thanks to that can find out what is the perfect size for them. Technology is simply comparing customer’s measurement with producer’s size table.

3DLook claims to use advanced machine learning, AI and image processing to achieve their results. Recently, they got funding of $1 million for further development. Their technology can be a huge step forward successful apparel online shopping and, according to my research, fashion retailers hope it to be so.

And what is your opinion on this case? How many times did you buy a wrong size of some new clothes? Do you think that such technology is going to solve this problem? Let me know down below!

How your footsteps can be turned into energy?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Today 7.4 Billion people live on the planet earth and 55% of them already live in the cities. Those cities are getting smarter and smarter, with all the sensors and technology around us. You can be a part of this digitalisation process by simply walking on the pavement, but not just a regular one, but one produced by Pavegen.

What is Pavagen? A technology that has been introduced by a young Brit of a name of Laurence Kemball-Cook. Pavegen is basically a pavement which uses the energy of your footsteps to generate electric energy. He came up with it after leaving the largest energy company in Europe, because he could not a solution for the task they gave him (the task was to produce a street light powered from renewable energy). After he left he did not stop thinking about it, and started thinking about something smart and viable. Thanks to his studies of Industrial Design Technology, he came up with an idea of generating energy though every single footstep of millions and millions of people in the cities. He has spent 4 years developing the technology to allow it work and finally Pavegen started existing and this days is being implemented into different cities in many countries all around the globe.

Not only does it generate electricity, but also is able to store energy and analyse the walking habits of people, which in the near future will definitely be useful for many people who will be planning the cities for a growing numbers of people, shops, cars (let’s hope not) and many other things. The smarter the cities, the easier our lives.

Amazon Scout robots are on their way to deliver packages

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Amazon Scout is a fully-electric robot that uses autonomous devices to safely deliver goods to the customers.

After many hours of development in Seattle, Amazon has finally decided to let their robots to the tasks they were designed for. Initially, only 6 robots have been released now and all of them are in Washington state, Snohomish County. They will deliver packages Monday through Friday in daylight hours. While traveling through the County’s pavements, the robots can avoid human, pets or other objects on the way, but at the initial release which took place at Wednesday – Amazon said that the robots will be accompanied by an Amazon employee.

This is how the process is supposed to look like.

As you can see the robot is fairly big. My main concern is security. What could be stopping a potential robber from just straight up coming up and stealing the whole robot or when the lid opens taking out the package and running off. The idea is great, but somehow seems to have many holes that could be exploited. Those questions aren’t answered yet, but Amazon is looking at it pretty optimistically.

We are happy to welcome Amazon Scout to our growing suite of innovative delivery solutions for customers and look forward to taking the learnings from this first neighborhood so Amazon Scout can, over time, provide even more sustainability and convenience to customer deliveries.

Looks like they are equipped with proper tools and a plan. It is very exciting to see new autonomous devices helping people like this robot or Amazon’s drones. Questions will arise:

Is it likely for robots like this to take jobs away from people, leading to more unemployment?

And when will the technology leave the US and make it to Poland?
