Walking cars

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Recently South Korean company that produced a cars called Hyundai introduce their new concept about cars called Elevate. The vehicle is equipped with a robotics legs and can be used independently of weather conditions or terrain of the landscapes.

On Wednesday the company released a new image of a technique and several days later Hyundai  presented  a little prototype of the vehicle.

On the annual electronics convention company shared a video that give a brief introduction on how the invention can be used, for which purposes it was created and what kinds of problems it can solve.

The innovation can be used in different spheres of life. As an example, the it can be used by an ordinary people that live in the areas of frequent snowfalls, it can decrease the traffic congestion and the rate of accidence on the road.

Also, during some accidence like cave-in in mountains the cars can be used as an ambulance that is able to get directly to the affected person that require an immediate help despite any kind of terrain, without extra movements of humans bodies which in turn help to avoid some unpleasant consequences.

Another idea is to use this vehicle as a taxi. It would be useful for people with disabilities because thanks to the  robotic  legs a car can pick up a person mostly from everywhere. It is quite effective especially when there is no contraction for disabled for instance a ramp.

Overall, the possibilities of usage of the machine are limitless.

MACHINES CAN UNDERSTAND THEIR SURROUNDING USING ONLY CAMERA

Reading Time: 3 minutes

“VISUAL POSITIONING SERVICE”

One of the computer vision startups launched in London called “Space Technologies” with a help of seed funding receive almost 8 millions dollars for the developing of his new innovation named “Visual Positioning Service”. This program give a possibility to inventors of different applications that need an accurate location use the service that is much more sensitive and precise than a usual GPS.

At the beginning the techniques may be used by applications that use an augmented reality, but the inventors think that it also may apply to applications of different categories such as mobility, logistics, robotics etc. Moreover, the company plan to implement the system in different machines, firstly in cars that have a camera, so that they be able to understand their accurate position.[1]

Those steps are supported by different companies such as LocalGlobe, Mosaic Ventures, Fly Ventures and by the builders of the organization Entrepreneur First. The startup is not so well-known, it actually remain quite secret until know. One of the places there it was announced in public was an EF cohort 7 where it took [art in the annual demo day.

The co-founder of the Space Technologies and CEO Edward Miller explain such strict privacy of the company. They said it is so because a lot of hoopla exist around the space technologies and inventions. That is why the company put all the affords not on the advertisement, publicity or the hype around the innovation but on the quality, accuracy, credibility and trustworthy. The researchers want to make a completely new way of infrastructure that will be based only on a usage of camera and will be monitored and navigate by the AI. The project that makes al that ideas a reality called “Vision Engine” and is the center of current research.

“VISION ENGINE” PROJECT

The CEO of the company told that as a part of this project will be developed a 3D maps from the usual images and videos of the surrounding as a large-scale mapping pipeline. Thanks to the invented by the company Positioning Service API that can be used by the cameras in any device the accuracy of the location will be incomparable to GPS services. Currently the invention can be used in London for chosen partners.

Miller reject to give detailed explanation have the team of 30 people make such detailed map of the hole London to save some secrets that make a startup more mysterious. [2]

INVENTORS BACKGROUND

It is important to mention that the current CEO before was one of the photographers of British streets, that give his a significant benefit – the vision of the city in a map moreover in a different scale. He also was familiar with a production of interactive images and even took part in projects conducted in this sphere for big corporations. One of them was Jaguar. What is more the Millers partner worked on different research projects in the robotics field. Once he take part in study were he taught robots with many logs how to walk. [3]

FACED DIFICALTIES

One of the difficulties that inventors faced was the attempt to make the computers “see” surrounding with a camera. Computers in comparison with people see the photo in a completely different way, while humans can recognize cars, buildings etc. computers see only bunch of ones and zeros. The aim was to make it convert that signs into something with the intent.

The “Space Technologies” have to invent a lot of little technological devices so that computers were able to find as accurate as possible the location of the user despite any weather conditions. The invention is able to connect to a lot of services at the same time. It means that the service can be provided within the level of a hole city.

The technique is really unique because in enable previously impossible applications.[4]

The wristband that detects an opiate overdose

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Opiate is a drug made from opium, the term is the modern interpretation of the old one. Going to statistics every day in the world 46 people die from the opioid overdose including those who take opioid according to the prescription.  That troubling measurement features the staggering general well-being emergency that has grasped a great part of
the nation.

One conceivable approach to spare lives may originate from straightforward wearable intended to distinguish overdoses among individuals dependent on the incredible and possibly fatal narcotic painkillers.
A few organizations have been researching how gadgets like wristbands or watches could follow certain well-being estimates that may demonstrate a narcotic overdose. One such gadget was created via Carnegie Mellon University students. It is called the HopeBand. It can alert in emergency cases, make red lights, send a current location of the user and distinguish a level of oxygen in the blood. An early alarm could give enough time for individuals to direct life-sparing naloxone and prevent the overdose.

The developers said that, basically, the HopeBand is your virtual friend that is able to understand the symptoms of overdose, know where to call and when and will ensure that you’ve got a sufficient help. The U.S. Canters for Disease Control and Prevention published a statics that said that from1999 to 2016 the number of death from the overdose in the U.S. tripled. Interestingly, the medicine called fentanyl (a painkiller maid from opioid) during the period of time mentioned before was responsible for the largest number of overdose. It is a fact that till the 2017 the number of death from fentanyl made up almost 30 000 while in general the number of victims was accounted for almost 72 000.

Several companies, research teams and universities were empowered to create a device that will be a solution. One of them was a scientist from the MIT- IBM Watson AI Lab used different technologies to research what are the other way to make a prescription, have to overcome an addiction and its symptoms.

Opioid issue interested the world. The problem was also researched by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, they spurred companies to develop new interesting and unique techniques concerning the opioid epidemic. They conduct an innovation challenge and choose eight innovations  among 250 others. The goal of the several of them is to reduce the number of opioid prescriptions that will help to decrease the rate of death from the overdose. Other applications are able to treat an addiction by stimulation certain brain parts with magnetic fields, or provide patients with virtual reality therapy as a way of pain relief.

There is a one technology from FDA that work, basically, as a HopeBand. The inventor is a Masomo Corporation, but the device is more suitable for patient that stay at hospital and need to take the medicine after a complicated surgeries.

In contrast  Carnegie Mellon University students wanted to make a gadget more suitable for everyday usage, the team focused on a cheap thing that is able to analyse and estimate people health no matter where they go. Thanks to the financial support given by Pinney Associates (pharmaceutical consulting firm) students started working on a solution. They get a third place on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundations Opioid Challenge held in California.

Because the pulse oximetry is the best way to indicate a overdose according to the software engineer Soham Donwalkar they decided to focus on the watch-style type of device.

Heartbeat oximetry sensors can screen the oxygen levels in blood by sparkling light from LEDs through the skin

and identifying changes in light ingestion. On the off chance that oxygen levels drop low enough to flag

conceivable overdose, the gadget screens the circumstance for 10 seconds before sounding the alert. Be that as it may, the group still faces an extreme test in approving regardless of whether the HopeBand really works in distinguishing overdoses with real individuals.

One of the problems that inventors faced is that they cannot  test the innovation on the real people, but the experiments made in the lab showed good results.

Current prototype of the gadget cost approximately 26$.

In the future students plan to add a lot of other helpful features to the device.

Artificial intelligence faithfully recreates paintings with a 3D printer

Reading Time: 3 minutes

What is it?

Museums and art exhibition are a magic places where you can immersed into ancient cities life, explore the vision of painters by looking on their pictures and learn something for your overall development. But usually people do not take into consideration have difficult is it to for museums to get pictures made by that well-known artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Vincent Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Michelangelo. Even the production of a good copy cost a lot.

Recently, scientists at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Massachusetts introduce their new invention. It is a system that make a good reproduction of wonderful artists work using just a photo of them. That make possible the production of any kind of painting for museums or for an individual users. So with a help of this technology everyone has the opportunity to enjoy any kind of paintings even at home. [1]

What is it for?

Have you ever consider have much the paintings may cost. For example Salvator Mundi that attributed to Leonardo da Vinciwas sold for $450.3 millions, which is quitea lot. So the tool may be used for saving money, also it is just an aesthetic pleasure for each particular individuals.

Who can use it?

It can be used by different institutions for examples local art galleries that are not so big and well-known to get the access and sufficient amount of money to buy those paintings, also buy every individual that wont to decorate their home, office or that ever.

How is it working?

Pictures of the original works of art are first analyzed by a deep-learning artificial intelligence algorithm, which selects the right combination of inks to be used. Each of the 10 transparent inks is then carefully deposited by a 3D printer, with colors often being stacked on top of one other. Gradients are reproduced through well-known techniques such as half toning (the use of dots of various size and spacing to simulate a continuous tone).[2]

Problems

One of the minuses that technology has is the inability to reproduce almost  same texture. Because the inc can not give the same effect that acryl or oil give.[3]

Interesting feature

The light play an important role. The picture that you have at home can look completely different than the one that you are enjoying on the art exhibition.

The technology is able to reproduce the same colors even when the current light conditions are different.[4]

Criticism

In this part I want to identify some negative aspects of the issue. First idea that come to the mind when you become more familiar about the technology is the possibility of devaluation of famous paintings. There is actually exist such perspective that in the future such great amount of money will not be spend on paintings, because, obviously, that will not be no more such a unique thing. However, the original may be appreciated, but it will be quite difficult to distinguish which one was made by the artist and which one with the help of technologies. Another aspect that need to be taken into consideration is the possibility of complete disappearance of art galleries.

Crypto-anchors. New IBM invention

Reading Time: 2 minutes

There millions of products  all over the world. Every day humans invent something new. Some of this innovations  are amazing business ideas that make people spend thousands of dollars on a one product or a service. But not everyone is able to introduce and implement really good things. It is much easier to make a copy and sold it as a real  instance. As the result of such manipulation suffered not only customers that use not as good and as qualitive thing that they expected but also companies that do not get that profit that they could. Recently, one of the IBM researchers during the Think 2018 in Las Vegas introduce an idea on how to tackle the problem. He present a new technic called Crypto-anchors.

IBM claim that the new cryptographic anchors are the  smallest computers that exist in the world right now.

Interestingly:

  • the product is smaller than even a seed ;
  • consist of several hundred thousand transistors;
  • cost of production is no more than 10 cents;
  • is able monitoring, analyzing, communicating.
  • IBM approvesthat the first prototype could be available for customers during the next 18 months.[1]

“They’ll be utilized with a blockchain’s dispersed record innovation to guarantee a protest’s credibility from its purpose of starting point to when it achieves the hands of the client,” said Arvind Krishna, head of IBM Research.[2]These devices provide a new possible way out for issues such nourishment wellbeing, authenticity of manufactured components, genetically adjusted items, identification of counterfeit objects and provenance of lextravagance goods.

There is no particular opinion on have they should look like. There are a lot of prototypes that can but used for different purpose and each crypto-anchor will be different from another.

For example, one of the interesting way to use the device is the magnetic inc that will be covered a malaria pills.  People can identify the real one according to the color and code that would be visible when the pill will be under the water or using a miniature computers. [3]

From my perspective, fraud is an enormous problem that need a real solution. The idea is good, but on that stage I am not able to say that it is a successful one. If everything works out, I think the device will be widely spread cause it can guarantee customer safetyand prevent unfair fraud.
