What is the next step for improvement of our online connection?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In 2019, the whole world changed and was forced to move everything online, as we were heading to 2021, recovering from difficult months of lockdowns, people have felt the urge to go out and to meet others in person, while those others could prefer to stay at home. It was difficult to make some to go, for instance to the offices, so the solution was found – hybrid mode. It was considered to the helping hand and solution for people to be connected but staying at their comfortable space.

Now, we are at the beginning of 2023, and the new issue has been identified, the lack of feeling of being connected, some people can turn off their cameras, others can simply not answer. Logitech – a Swiss company that is concentrated on developing innovation products in the tech industry, recently they have announced a Telepresence Video Booth, which was called ‘Project Ghost’.

Life-size, eye-to-eye conversations are ensured by new mechanism of using a mirror to project the video chat. ‘Project Ghost’ – is a separated Video Booth, that assure people’s have ability to connect all over the world being secure and private during the call.

This novelty is a great step towards acquainting people closer to one another even for those that are not able to meet in person, it allows to have direct eye contact, which is impossible when it comes to Zoom, Skype or other similar platforms.

Sure, such inventions have drawbacks, in this case, the size and price. It is not possible to install a lot of such Video Booth even in big offices, as they require a lot of space. By putting them too close, we are taking some part of the privacy of the conversations, which was actually, one of the main advantages of the ‘Project Ghost’. What is more, the price can possible be not as huge as several hundred thousand, but more if instead of the mirror the glasses-free 3D part was used, which is taking some part of the quality of the video series.

So, there is a battle between practicality and neediness, connection, or convenience. The only thing left is to observe the changes, as we will eventually come to some better ways of connection rather than Zoom calls.

No users – only “useds”

Reading Time: 2 minutes

by Lev Hladush

Richard Matthew Stallman, an American free software movement activist and programmer, has said that social media sites don’t have users – they have useds. The primary reasons for sites like Facebook to exist is to generate revenue for the company and they have two main ways of doing so. First way is by using their webpage as a terminal for advertisements. Second way is gathering as much data about their consumers or users as possible and then selling to any interested company.

In the first case, to maximize revenue, users are manipulated to stay online, giving as much eyeball time to the ads as possible. Algorithms that allow specific targeting in order to cause strong emotions to keep people engaged, dopamine-inducing things like count of your subscribers or likes on your posts. All of it has the sole purpose – consuming more of your time. Thus, converting your time into profit(don’t forget that 98% of Facebook’s revenue comes from advertisers)

In the second case, things get a bit trickier. Facebook doesn’t sell your data directly. Instead, what they do sell is access to a platform that makes it as easy as possible for advertisers to reach you based on your interests. And creation of Metaverse(which has already been discussed in numerous posts previously on technoblog, so I believe there is no need to explain what is it exactly) allows to gather even more data. And more data makes good business sense. But there are (in my opinion, well-founded) fears that the new data we create in the Metaverse could lead to a privacy nightmare. For example, Facebook made a big deal about the fact that it’s not going to be doing facial recognition on photos that you upload to Facebook anymore. But it hasn’t said it’s not going to do facial recognitions in Metaverse. For sure, generating more data is not necessarily harmful, but it could give companies like Facebook an unprecedented amount of control.

Knowing this all, the scenario shown in this video seems quite believable.

Facebook at Work

Reading Time: < 1 minuteSooner or later it should have happened – the biggest social platform is about to introduce Facebook at work. Being genuinely honest the social giant started to talk about business inclined Facebook 5 years ago and bunch of companies have been using the closed beta version for over a year. However now, according to rumours, the platform is ready to be released.

Presumably Facebook at work gives the majority of regular Facebook features, but rather aim to connect co-workers in one place. The interface is going to be the same: with likes, news feed, messenger etc. However some differences will appear – for instance paying Candy Crush is impossible 🙁 User will be able to have to profiles simultaneously – regular and working (in different applications though).

Since there is lack of relevant info so far, I would guess the following:

  1. This network is going to be solely professional: business posts, news and pics.
  2. Additional tools may be provided for specific fee (analysis and technical instruments)
  3. Discorage workers to use Facebook in a working place was not the main purpose. The main purpose is to create business community.
  4. Typical user can’t create a Facebook at Work profile unless his employee bought a subscription (access, package or else)
  5. Head Hunting agencies will not be present (at least in the first place) and I believe Facebook at Work will not be transformed into head hunting tool.

I have a faith in this project largely due to Facebook popularity.

Leave a comment on Facebook is now possible in the offline mode

Reading Time: < 1 minuteNo wonder that in Facebook launched an initiative Tuesday with slow internet. With a little work one hour a week in the 2G-mode connection, the staff social networks quickly devised a way to make Facebook more pleasant for people with slow internet.

Most unlucky owners of devices based on Android, since to date only in the application to the operating system the opportunity to add comments to posts offline.facebook-news-feed-1024x538

About new function reports The Next Web. Now all the comments written by the user, the application will be stored until the next connection to the network. Re-connect to the Internet, the program will publish your comments on Facebook.

Recently, Facebook is also to change the mechanism of formation of news feeds on a slow connection or total absence. Now tape the user will be displayed not only fresh content, but also the older ones, have not yet viewed the records that had previously load. It is still better than to look at the download icon.

On Facebook they said they are working to improve that allows you to automatically update the tape during the day when you are connected to the Internet. If Facebook-dependent will be happy to this fact, others likely will disable this feature due to the application, in any case much battery power, regardless of the device and the operating system.

Buying is easier then ever

Reading Time: 2 minutesBig retailers and brands have been always interested in finding new ways to promote and sell their goods and services. And I believe one of the convenient and fast methods is about to be invented. Lately largest social media started to embed “buying” option inside their platform. From the first sight it may be small feature, but it may carry great potential. Let’s figure out.

facebook-buy-button2

Facebook was among the firsts to test this option. Basically now visiting the brand’s fun page the user can find numerous posts with goods (descriptions etc.) with “buy” option. Now clicking the button redirects You to the page WITHIN THE APPLICATION following further procedures to seal the deal.

The Twitter started to implement the same option in its platform.2  It works with the same idea – the client stays inside the twitter account, buying the good or service.

The service Like2buy exploits the idea and implicates it on Instagram.

And now the main point. Despite the explicit better off both for users (seamless shopping, matching social networking with buying things, speed to procedures (brands will optimise buying experience for social networks etc.) and for brands (buyers are all  on social platforms) there is another cool thing. Facebook is about to introduce it’s paying system. If it happens then users will get the perfect way to enjoy shopping: no additional info needed to provide  (credit card, personal data etc.). In this case You are literally one click away from purchasing.

What do You think about it? Would You use it?
