Would you want your kids to start coding at the age of 7?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

If you think you still know everything about Lego ‘cause you played it in the 90’s – you are mistaken.

Lego rocked this year on the CES 2017 event, by showcasing its new product – a robot-making toolkit for kids that are also interested in learning how to code. The kit comes with components for building five fantastic models: Vernie the Robot, the Guitar 4000, the Multi-Tool Rover 4 (M.T.R.4), Frankie the Cat, and the Autobuilder, delivered by Curbed

Designed for 7+, the kids will be building their robots with the help of a free app that will provide the instructions for creating an animal, a vehicle, and a robot of their own design.

The fact that the robots can also be programmed is fulfilling dreams of probably every kid who wants his toys to be alive. Using the same app, kids are able to let their imagination go wild with the help of the programming language designed by Lego, that is replacing the usual lines of code with puzzle pieces, which only fit together in a certain order.

Lego “Boost” will be put on shelves mid this year and cost you $160. At least it’s good it didn’t get there before Christmas! 🙂

Check out how it works:

I can’t prevent myselg to think that 7 years is still relatively early to start coding. In the same time, what I saw in the explanatory video is different from what I thought when you spoke of “code” your the article, so maybe this game will create vocations

The first time I saw this product few years ago. I loved it, it is really easy to understand the logic behind coding… It can be used by kids as well as adults. It has a simple application to show you and teach you how to make coding etc.

But I am afraid, it has some limitations :(. At least the generation that I have bought was not that good. But I heard LEGO did something great that can be useful to learn more and more.

I’m 24 and I already feel old, because I don’t really understand technology. Is 7 too young to learn coding? I don’t think so! The earlier you start, the better. Children have amazing brains and learn everything way faster than adults. ‘Learning to code’ might sound scary to our generation, as we don’t know how to do it and it seems really complicated to us. However, you have to keep in mind that coding is just like learning another language. Or not even a language, it’s like learning a new kind of logic. I’m sure this would only be beneficial for children, just like maths and foreign languages are. Coding teaches a way of thinking and if you know the basics, it’s way easier to learn more complicated stuff. So I personally think coding should be introduced to schools and kids should learn in from the very beginning of education.

Lego is doing a great job and I hope it’ll make more parents and teachers think about the importance of new skills 🙂
