The history of the first supersonic flights dates back to the 60s of the last century. However, until nowadays technology and regulations allow to use their potential.
Boom Technology, an American startup is working on the construction of the new supersonic plane. Their mission is to bring back the supersonic travel and make it widely affordable.
Supersonic aircraft is able to fly faster than a speed of sound which is Mach 1. Aircraft presented by Boom Technology should reach the speed Mach 2.2. This technology allows shortening the flight time by half.
„If we can fly twice as fast, the world becomes twice as small, turning far off lands into familiar neighbours.” – Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of Boom Technology
Will supersonic flights become a norm?
Until now, supersonic aircrafts have been used mainly for military purposes. Boom tries to make a supersonic flight a new standard for business class passengers. The company presents an idea of the business class airliner – Overture
Overture has 55 premium seats with large personal window. Places are designed in a way that guarantees privacy, convenience and conducive to productivity. The overhead storages are removed and replaced with locker located under the seat which allows easier access to the luggage.
What is the most important, Overture significantly reduces flight time in comparison to currently available air connections. Flight to London from New York can last 3h 15 min instead of 7h and from Sydney to Los Angeles 6h 45 min instead of 15h. Moreover, the cost of such a flight is to be similar to the flights offered by subsonic business class flights.
The company has already built the one-third scale, two-seat supersonic demonstrator called XB-1 Baby Boom. Boom Technology claims that “XB-1 is the first independently developed supersonic jet and history’s fastest civil aircraft.”. During the flight test in 2019 form, Mojave Air & Space Port in Southern California Baby Boom should maintain March 2.2.
An era of supersonic flights is almost here. It has not been possible on a massive scale to cover huge areas and such a short time. Soon it will be standard available for everyone. What will be the next step in improving travel quality?

I love this development. I knew that something like this would be becoming a reality in the future, but to be experiencing this first hand would be amazing. Before, flying seemed impossible and before that cars seemed impossible. I love being able to observe such major technological changes being made. I hope to see where our innovation will take us.
Wow!That is amazing innovation.I REALLY would like to travel in the plane like this.I my view the next step is to make this type of technology affordable for everyone .
Well, world is changing and improving every day. I am really looking forward to go as passenger on a trip to the Moon, with this speed of development, i truly think it will happen soon. I guess indeed there have been created plans for commercial flights to space, I can’t wait!
I like this idea very much, but Im super excited about comptetition between Boom Technology (by the way, its super cool the name is related to reaching speed of sound efect) and SpaceX, which last year annouced that in the future they will be using their rockets for commercial flights. SpaceX claims that their rockets will be able to transport people from London to New York in 30 mins (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LENvGRsr7Q).
After all, I personally think that supersonic planes will replace subsonic planes and the rockets will be a thing for the richest in this world (at least at the beginning). What are your thoughts on that?
You definitely have a point. We have subsonic flights available on a huge scale and space flights that only a few can afford. Boom is trying to create something in the middle, which has a chance to become a new standard of travel. In turn, the SpaceX project looks more like an idea for the future and there is still a long way to go before implementing it. Let’s think about the infrastructure that needs to be created in every city the rocket would be sent to or about the endurance of the human body to load. I believe that Boom is creating something that will be a big step forward in a way people travel and it may happen soon.
A flight from London to New York in 3,5h would be amazing. I wonder why there is such a huge gap in time between Concorde flights and return to supersonic flights (19 years!). I understand that technology is now easily accessible and people got scared after a crash of Concorde, but I think that such innovation was possible a few years ago.
