The new M1 Chip

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Apple has already held its third fall online presentation dedicated to an unusual but significant innovation – new branded processors for their PCs. The primary product was the Apple M1 computer chip. The Apple M1 could be a 5nm system-on-a-chip (SoC) with 16 billion transistors. It accommodated eight CPU cores, eight graphics cores, and a 16-core computational neuro block, within the way of what is in Apple’s mobile processors. A part of the CPU consists of two clusters: four powerful cores and four energy-efficient ones. The graphics processor includes 128 execution units, and its performance reaches 2.6 teraflops, which is plenty. Compared to past processors used in Macs and MacBooks, the new Apple M1 has the fastest performance per watt – twice as fast than processors used before.

Moreover, laptops and computers running on the Apple M1 will perform background tasks while sleeping. In terms of software, developers will receive the mandatory tools to form and optimize applications for both Apple and Intel platforms. Apple’s processors also will be ready to run applications and games designed for the iPhone and iPad. Within the future, it is planned to transfer all computers and laptops to the proprietary platform. The primary devices to use the Apple M1 were the MacBook Air 2020, Mac Mini 2020, and MacBook Pro 13 Pro 2020.

Of course, after each presentation, many questions appear, like – Apple took advantage of the actual fact that the new Apple MacBook Air with the M1 processor is 98% faster than comparable Windows laptops. Where did they get this information? What PCs on Windows did they compare to? On behalf of me personally, the main  questions will be is there any difference in performance between MacBook Air and MacBook pro if they both are on precisely the identical processors, then what is the purpose of buying the pro version? What do you think about this new chip?

I’m a fan of Apple, but the whole presentation was just about pure marketing and irrelevant stuff. Their graphs and comparisons? Absolute nonsense… They could’ve present it better, but we’ll see if those chips are a real deal when they start rolling-out the first devices.

PS: Btw. unofficial Apple sources have predicted this more than 2 years ago!

  2. Bogatyriov Oleg says:

Not sure about the chip. Apple loves showing regular things in the view of smth unusual.
Only when we’ll see the device with the M1 chip, we can say is it good or…Apple managers work well 🙂

Some of the tests were already made, we can see that the chip is really powerful, but to see the whole picture, reviewers should use it for some time to make a clear statement.

I bought a MacBook Pro 13 in August and have mixed feelings right now. Because I really like mine but the new one is better. And used Intel-based Macs are decreasing in price. The m1 chip is really a giant step forward. I saw it in work in real life, the GPU is equal to 1050ti and the overall experience is better. I’m planning on selling my Intel mac but maybe next year because now it’s more like beta testing, the chip is not polished enough.
