The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) describes the “bionic company”. These are companies that “combine the strengths of humans and technologies to create superhumans”, or what the authors describe as “bionic capabilities”. To do this, they use new technologies such as cloud, AI and others to create a new technology platform to create a completely new entity, they further combine these wii-fi technologies.
According to BCG, “Bionic companies outperform others in terms of cash flow and enterprise value”. In addition, BCG maintains that businesses not only had these features before COVID-19 started, but continue to demonstrate this performance in places where recovery is ongoing.
As we lead the “digital transformation” the theory reinforces the main lessons and positions we need to learn. This verifies the fields in which we need to practice and learn. It understands that internet-native companies have an edge, but in the new digital/industrial climate, it helps conventional businesses to expand and prosper.
Although BCG does not provide simple numbers that validate its arguments, it is a respectable organisation with the presumption that organisations who uphold the principles they convey would outperform those who should not be granted some serious attention.
- The plurality of bionic firms are digital natives, but conventional enterprises should still “reposition their competitive capabilities” by working on their digital transformation.
- Technological developments such as artificial intelligence, digital talent, and applications and services built on the network are leveraged. Yet these developments, while adequate, are not sufficient. What is important to performance is how they are implemented and expressed in organizational strategy, practices and processes.
- There are at least four key attributes of a bionic company:
- A clear sense of purpose.
- Focus on business outcomes.
- With creativity, creative vision, design and technical skills, human talent in autonomous teams makes for quick decision-making.
- Leveraging stacks of adaptable and “data liberated” scalable technology.
