World’s Most Powerful Magnet almost Ready

After more than 10 years full of design and production, General Atomic is ready to hand over the first Central Solenoid module, which is to become the most powerful magnet in the world.

It will become the central component of ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor), a machine that replicates the power of the sun’s nuclear fusion. The machine is a thermonuclear reactor, part of an international research program to investigate the possibility of large-scale production of energy from controlled nuclear fusion.

The construction of the ITER machine takes place in the south of France, and 35 partner countries are involved in its design and construction. This chip prompts companies like General Atomic to expand their knowledge of futuristic technologies.

The effort to bring nuclear fusion power closer to operation is backed by some of the world’s biggest developed and emerging economies, including the EU, the US, China, India, Japan, Korea and Russia. However, a review of the long-running project in 2013 found problems with its running and organization. This led to a reorganization that subsequent reviews have broadly endorsed.

The central electromagnet, the largest of the ITER magnets, will consist of six modules. It is one of the largest US contributions to the development and construction of ITER.

The fully ready machine is scheduled to be put into service and further tests by 2025.
