As we all know, virtual reality has started becoming increasingly popular over the last decade. Recently Facebook has changed its name to Meta, being inspired by the concept of the Metaverse. By definition, Metaverse is a virtual space where users can interact with other users in virtual reality. I believe with the addition of Metaverse that Meta (Facebook) is trying so hard to normalize, the Metaverse has the potential to play a major role in the future of Virtual Reality.
Advantages
I believe there are countless advantages and opportunities that come with the Metaverse that Meta is trying to propose. The main ones would be
- The customers can test the products before buying them.
This is one of the most talked-about advantages of what the Metaverse will offer. This will allow the customers to feel and experience the product first-hand before buying it.
2. It will allow the user to visit any country in the world.
Being in the Covid-19 pandemic makes international travel a lot more challenging so having that feature enables people to socialize in this environment. Rather than contemplating whether the trip to another country is worth it, a user can just visit the country beforehand to see whether they like it or not.
3. It will be compatible with many different apps like Messenger, Dropbox, MS Teams, etc.
This will be incredibly handy for a lot of users. Rather than pulling out your phone for a notification when you’re using your VR equipment, you can just access it from the VR itself.
Disadvantages
Like with all things, there are also some drawbacks for the Metaverse. In order to understand the public perception of the Metaverse better, a survey was conducted where 42 participants were asked to answer a few questions after learning about what the Metaverse was. Although the initial feeling about the Metaverse was extremely positive (88%), 12% of the responses were still negative. Some of the people who voted as having negative initial feelings about the concept of the metaverse stated things such as
- “People will lose that true physical connection, people’s ability to cope with real-world issues/problems and their social skills may deteriorate, can lead to physical inactivity which can lead to poor health, could lead to people escaping from their real-world responsibilities and duties.”
- “I believe in spending time in the real presence of our family and friends. This scares me because we are going to be spending less time physically and emotionally together.”
- “People will leave the physical world behind”

Summary
In conclusion, I believe that this so-called Metaverse will be a success because of all of the features that it brings to the table. In my opinion, in the long term, it might have several consequences such as people’s communication and social skills worsening, but everyday tasks such as calling people on the fly will be possible like never before on VR.

1.
Meta will definitely play a significant role in the future of virtual reality. They will be investing 10 billion dollars into the development of technologies related to it just this year.
Metaverses will likely have an enourmous impact on our society. Let’s just hope the pros won’t get outclassed by the cons.
