Fuel saving technologies in modern Cars.

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Modern car are packed with incredible technology this days. One that is constantly being developed is the ability to burn less fuel. This due to rasing cost of gas as well as meeting government expectation of lowering the CO2 emissions. But how cars that burn less fuel can release less carbon dioxide? Well to put it simple, If car burns less fuel it can travel for longer distance and we don’t have to visit gas station so often. The result lower emissions and usage of gas. Where can we apply changes that will decrease the amount of fuel used? There are couple things to improve such as transmission, fuel injectors, valves, dual-cluth system, tires and many more. Let us consider some of this inovations used in internal combustion engines cars and see how they work.

-Cylinder Deactivation system:

Cylinder deactivation is used to reduce the fuel consumption and emission of an internal combustion engine during light-load operation. In typical light-load driving the driver uses only around 30 percent of an engine’s maximum power. In these conditions, the throttel valve is nearly closed, and the engine needs to work to draw air. This causes an inefficiency known as pumping loss. Some large capacity engines need to be throttled so much at light load that the cylinder pressure at top dead center is approximately half that of a small 4-cylinder engine. Low cylinder pressure results in lower fuel efficency. The use of cylinder deactivation at light load means there are fewer cylinders drawing air from the intake manifold, which works to increase its fluid (air) pressure. Operation without variable displacement is wasteful because fuel is continuously pumped into each cylinder and combusted even though maximum performance is not required. By shutting down half of an engine’s cylinders, the amount of fuel being consumed is much less. Between reducing the pumping losses, which increases pressure in each operating cylinder, and decreasing the amount of fuel being pumped into the cylinders, fuel consumption can be reduced by 8 to 25 percent in highway conditions. To put it simple this technology “turns off” some of the engine’s cylinders when they are not needed. It essentially turns off the valves to some cylinders so that fuel and air aren’t pumped into them.

What is cylinder deactivation? PH Explains | PistonHeads UK

-Gasoline Direct Injection(GDI):

Also called direct fuel injectionspark ignition direct injection (SIDI)

In conventional gasoline engines, fuel is injected into the intake port and mixed with air while the air-fuel mixture is drawn into the cylinder. In direct injection systems, fuel is injected directly into the cylinder, which makes the fuel-air mixture somewhat cooler. Cooler air allows higher compression ratios and/or more efficient spark timing. This can increase performance and lower fuel use.

-Transmission, additionl gears:Adding gears allows your engine to operate at a more efficient speed more often. The more gearing options your vehicle has, the more efficient it can be.

8-Speed Automatic Transmission - ZF

-Dual Clutch Transmission(DCT):

Dual clutch transmissions (DCTs) combine the efficiency of manual transmissions with the convenience of automatics. Automatic transmissions are less efficient than manuals due to parasitic losses. DCTs operate much like manual transmissions, except that they use two clutches and automatic shifting. They are generally not quite as smooth as regular automatics, but manufacturers are making strides to improve this.

How Dual-clutch Transmissions Work | HowStuffWorks

-Stop-Start System:

Also called idle-stop or smart-start. These systems automatically turn the engine off when the vehicle comes to a stop and restart it instantaneously when the the brake is released or the accelerator is pressed. This reduces fuel wasted during idling.

-Low Rolling Resistance Tires:

When rolling, a tire is continually deformed by the load of the vehicle on it. This causes energy loss. Manufacturer changes to tire shape, materials, and tread design can reduce rolling resistance and improve fuel economy.

low rolling resistance tires | New Emerging Automobile Technologies

This are the improvement that are already being used and are constantly being developed. There are also much better ways of increasing the fuel efficiency, for example full hybrids, or mild hybrids cars. In the world of rapid changes we only can imagine how would future look like. Are gas powerd cars going to be displaced by electric, hybrids or hydrogen powerd cars? We will see what future holds.

Medical device that may save your life

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you were a knife wound victim and would start to bleed excessive? According to scientists’ stab victims can bleed to death in just 5 minutes, so there is a priority for emergency personnel is to stop catastrophic blood loss. So, what if there was a technological advancement that could potentially prevent from this situation and save your life?

This year a 22-year-old Joseph Bentley Loughborough University graduate invented a life- saving device that rapidly stops bleeding from knife wounds. He came up with the idea of making this tool after two of his friends were unfortunately victims of knife attacks. Therefore, to prevent fatal accidents he invented a device called “REACT”, which stands for “rapid emergency actuating tamponade”. He said that this advancement could potentially safe hundreds of lives every year. This technology is a pressurized balloon that is inserted into a stab. It uses pressure to prevent bleeding and makes it easier to target areas of the body that are usually hard to treat.

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/dyson-award-stab-wounds-joseph-bentley-b952188.html

Why is it that innovative device?

While having contact with victims the advice for treating stab wounds is to never remove object from the wounds, if it’s still in the place, to avoid bleeding out. In this situation this breakthrough advancement would help a lot and make this situation safer by inserting a pressurized balloon into a stab.

How does it work?

The concept is based on the same principle as implantable, medical- grade silicon balloon tamponade that would be inserted into a wound. The tamponade is inflated with pressure according to wound location to try and stop the bleeding. The process should take less than 30 seconds depending on the wound location. It effectively fills the cavity and prevents from internal bleeding.

IS BENZENE THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WHEN IT COMES TO THE COMPOSITION OF DEODORANTS AND ANTIPERSPIRANTS IN COMPANY P&G(2021)?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Benzen

Benzene is an organic compound (exactly an aromatic hydrocarbon) present in the air and soil, but most of all it is produced as a result of the processing of crude oil. Although it occurs in nature, it is a toxic compound. Long-term stay in places with an excess of it may cause carcinogenic disease.

P&G PROBLEMS

Recently, the Procter and Gumble company has withdrawn deodorants from companies such as Old Spyce (which belong to the aforementioned group). Because they had a small amount of benzene in their composition, although they met the requirements for its amount in this product. The company itself admitted that it had not received any complaints about the defectiveness of their products from external companies or consumers, and stated in its statement that the detected (daily) level of benzene would not cause health problems for consumers. These deodorants, although they had an expiry date until 2023, did not return for sale and were probably disposed of and new deodorants were produced on their site to cover the losses. It is not a happy time for P&G as the company has also had problems with excess benzene in its products in the recent past. Some time ago, Valisure Company discovered a significant excess amount of benzene in other old spice products, which could already lead to health problems due to the 8 times excess amount of benzene in the products. These products were immediately withdrawn from sale.

QUESTION FROM THE HEADER(OPINION)

So benzene is a poisonous product and as a result of its long-term excess, it can lead to the formation of negative mutations in the human body leading to cancer and causing a reduction in the number of red blood cells, leading to anaemia. However, despite this, using it in such small amounts as the use of a deodorant on the skin should not harm your health. First of all, the deodorant is not recommended to be sprayed significantly so that the aerosol reaches the respiratory system in large amounts. Secondly, when the aerosol hits the skin, it is not exposed to the penetration of benzene through its skin because the SKIN IS A MINIMUM PERCENTAGE OF GAS EXCHANGE AND THE BENZENE IS ALMOST ABSORBED BY IT. Therefore we should not worry about even a little more of it in an aerosol.

REAL PROBLEM (OPINION)

What we should be worried about are other constituents of these aerosols which can be irritating, carcinogenic, even one of the causes of Alzheimer’s or lead to hormonal imbalance in the body. Most people living on our planet are not aware of the existence of these components in aerosols. Knowing the composition of aerosols is important to avoid those that have the following substances in them:

Synthetic fragrances that pass through the skin and can accumulate in it (studies have shown that they can accumulate in it for so long that they can even be passed on in the future in mother’s milk)

formaldehyde-carcinogenic and irritating directly on the skin

propylene glycol makes it easier for other substances to get through the skin

aluminium clogs the pores of the skin and then, after long use, it can get into the human body, and unfortunately, significant amounts of aluminium in the body may affect the development of Alzheimer’s in the human body.

triclosan passes through the skin and can harm a person’s endocrine system

Examples from the article; (https://dziecisawazne.pl/antyperspiranty-sa-grozne-dla-zdrowia/)

SUMMARY

Benzene can be dangerous in too large amounts, even in deodorants when it reaches the respiratory system, but in fact, compared to other deodorant ingredients, it is not a major problem. Therefore, it is important to check the labels of deodorants and avoid those containing the above-mentioned substances.

The biggest in the history of the USA Samsung’s venture

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Samsung’s investment in the US is going to be a computer chip factory. South Korean giant wants to face a global crisis in semiconductors. They have chosen a Tailor city in Williamson County, located near Austin (Texas). This facility will be the biggest venture in Texas and the utmost foreign investment in the USA.

Why do we have such a crisis? There are a few reasons.

1.Covid-19 lockdowns have broken supply chains, chip producing factories were closed. More people switched to home-office; students were using computers for education.

2. We can observe rising prices of raw materials used in the chip-making process. Copper and other elements.

3. In the past year many facilities faced a problem with weather in Texas. For example, chip plants in Austin were closed due to snowstorms. Other factories in Japan caught fire. In Taiwan, there was the biggest drought in 50 years (making semiconductors requires a huge amount of water).

Over 17B $ facility will produce computer chips for AI and computers. Due to global shortages in this tech branch, the US government also wanted to secure the US industry from the shortfall. White House states that producing semiconductors is crucial for country security also for tech war with China. Joe Biden is concerned about the situation in the chips market. He wants to make domestic semiconductor production more efficient to cause the US industry less vulnerable to chips shortages.

Why Texas? Because of the stable climate and existing Samsung’s foundry in Austin. This plant will offer over 2,000 workplaces for tech staff and over 6,500 vacancies for construction workers.

“Samsung’s decision to locate its cutting-edge semiconductor fabrication plant in Taylor is the single most significant and consequential development for the local economy since the International & Great Northern Railroad laid tracks here in the 1870s,” said Taylor mayor Brandt Rydell.

Williamson County is prepared to hold this venture, they promised Samsung with tax breaks. Also, they made deals with other neighboring counties to provide decent water and electricity supply.

This plant will be ready in 2024. I think that the US is going to be the global leader in semiconductor production. It’s a great response to the current shortage of microprocessors and chips. Will we defeat this crisis? Yes, but it requires some time, building such facilities is a very complicated process. Also, Intel and TSMC (Taiwanese chip maker) are making ventures in Texas. Time will tell us how we face this crisis down.

Amazon Web Services toward reducing Carbon Emissions

Reading Time: 3 minutes

As Amazon claims, they currently have more than 234 solar and wind energy projects throughout the world, including projects in Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the UK. Together, these projects will provide over 10,000 MW of global renewable energy capacity when complete.
They are inviting organizations to join The Climate Pledge, a commitment to becoming net-zero carbon by 2040, 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. Co-founded by Amazon, more than 200 organizations have signed so far The Climate Pledge, committing to use their scale to decarbonize the economy through real business change and innovation.

Great! How renewable energy further reduces carbon emissions?
451 Research, a global research firm found that if a 1-megawatt corporate data center (about 1,000 square meters, at an assumed 30% electrical utilization rate) switches their applications to the cloud, they could reduce emissions by about 1,079 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. This is equivalent to removing over 500 cars from the roads or offsetting the annual electricity emissions of over 50 average households across Europe. That number rises to as much as 1,293 metric tons of carbon dioxide when a cloud provider is powered by 100% renewable energy. AWS is on path to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2025.

451 Research also find out and AWS commissioned that, migrating compute workloads to AWS across Europe could decrease greenhouse gas emissions equal to the footprint of millions of households. In addition, businesses could potentially reduce carbon emissions of an average workload by up to 96% when AWS reaches its goal of purchasing 100% of its energy from renewable sources.
And how? They surveyed senior stakeholders at over 300 companies across a broad range of industries in France, Germany, Ireland, Spain, and Sweden operating their own data centers. Results show that companies in Europe can reduce their energy use by almost 80% by moving their compute workloads out of on-premises data centers to AWS. Companies could potentially further reduce carbon emissions from an average workload – by up to 96% – once AWS meets its goal to be powered by 100% renewable energy. And compared to the computing resources of the average European company, cloud servers are roughly three times more energy efficient, and AWS data centers are up to five times more energy efficient. In fact, moving a megawatt (MW) of a typical compute workload from a European organization’s data center to AWS Cloud could reduce carbon emissions by up to 1,079 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.
Kelly Morgan, Research Director, Datacenter Infrastructure & Services at 451 Research, part of S&P Global Market Intelligence said; We were struck by how much opportunity there is for European businesses to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions by looking at their IT infrastructure. If you think of the electricity consumed and emissions produced by tens of thousands of companies across Europe operating their own data centers, this is an area that appears to be overlooked.

We can conclude that, cloud data centers are efficient because cloud providers focus on sustainability across their entire operation. In contrast, most businesses don’t prioritize their data center infrastructure sustainability, which means their data centers are not optimized for efficiency. Most businesses don’t prioritize addressing data center energy costs and carbon emissions because digital infrastructure is not their core business. Cloud providers focus on efficiency as a best practice. They operate servers at much higher utilization rates and design facilities to use less energy and water. Overall, the AWS Cloud infrastructure is up to five times more energy efficient than typical EU enterprise infrastructure. AWS achieves lower energy use in its data centers through designing cooling systems that reduce energy and water use, and using real-time sensor data to adapt to changing weather conditions. AWS’s scale enables high resource usage, and its global cloud infrastructure is built using Amazon’s own custom hardware, purpose-built and optimized for workloads run by AWS customers. This includes power-efficient processors like Graviton 2, the ARM-based AWS – designed chip that provides better performance per watt than any other Elastic Compute processor.

How it can affect and change the current situation?
AWS has responsibilities to the communities where they operate, and to them, that means sustainability and environmental stewardship. AWS is continuously working on ways to increase the energy efficiency of facilities and equipment, as well as innovating the design and manufacture of servers, storage, and networking equipment to reduce resource use and limit waste.

Bugatti x Rimac

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Rimac has just announced a massive milestone, as it combines forces with the iconic car manufacturer Bugatti Automobiles. Its main goal is to create a new automotive and technological powerhouse. This new collaboration is called ‘Bugatti Rimac’.

source: https://web-cdn.rimac-automobili.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/05153043/Bugatti-Rimac-e1625492571220-2160×1394.jpg

Bugattis’ 110 years experience in designing and engineering and Rimacs electric motors will be an interesting collaboration nonetheless. It’s impressive that The Croatian-based brand now owns 55% of Buggatis stake, while Porche owns the rest 45% of the stake. Quite impressive for a company that has sold less than 200 units.

Rimac is also known and trusted for the development, production, and supply of battery systems, drivetrains, and other EV components. However, that’s about to change as they announced it will be separated into new entities. Mate Rimac will be running as CEO on both Bugatti Rimac and Rimac. Although, they will still continue as individual brands. So far Rimac has been helping out Porsche Hyundai Koenigsegg and many others with their own technology. Porsche plays a strong role as a strategic partner in this creation.

source: https://web-cdn.rimac-automobili.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/05172555/Bugatti-RImac-2-1-2160×1441.jpg

This will be helping the industry to go electric by designing and producing key components for large OEMs hybrid and electric cars. Mate Rimac stated that: “Rimac and Bugatti are a perfect match in terms of what we each bring to the table. As a young, agile, and fast-paced automotive and technology company, we have established ourselves as an industry pioneer in electric technologies”

What Else Could We Expect?

We can expect either a Hybrid car from Bugatti or a fully Electric Bugatti. In general, both of these options will be more environmentally friendly for Bugatti. It also gives Bugatti more potential to reach its limits. Sadly all good things must come to an end — and the end is approaching for the famed quad-turbo 16-cylinder. Bugatti CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, stated that the W16 engine is “the last of its kind,” and there are no plans to give it another revival.

Downsides

Since Bugatti is going to use Rimacs technology, maintaining it might be more expensive. This could increase the already sky-high price of a Bugatti vehicle. Some customers of Bugatti bought Bugattis because of the engine, so some people might not accept the electric Bugattis. Bugatti Rimac is technically a joined venture, which means the following problems could occur:

Internal competition over control

Strategic asymmetry – leading to conflict over strategy or changes in interdependency levels

Operational asymmetry – methods and systems between the partners leading to conflict

Cultural asymmetry – cultural differences could lead to conflict

Managerial opportunism/or contract incompleteness – cheating behavior by one partner and raising the transactional/general costs

Conclusion

In conclusion, the future is looking bright and eco-friendly for all parties if they stay loyal to each other.

Camlist – Safe pet market

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Camlist is a video marketplace for pets. The idea behind it is to make a safe market where you can buy pets. Before transaction, you can have a video call with the seller to talk with him about the pet. The company ensures us that pets are in a healthy environment, as well as are vaccinated and dewormed.

CEO of Camlist said that they support buyers and sellers by providing free vaccinations, microchipping, deworming, insurance, and pet food to grant the best experience for users.

The app implemented a system to counter scammers. Camlist has an option “in-app payment” which releases funds once the buyer confirms receipt of the pets.

The company started in Dubai and became very popular. After raising $1.3 million their plan is to expand their reach in the UK where they entered earlier this year. In the future, they plan to expand on the number of items you can buy and to reach more countries.

In my opinion, this app is great as there wasn’t anything like that before. When it comes to buying pets you have to make sure that you pick an animal that you will be capable of looking after. Getting to know them better by talking to their owners can really help that process.

Why did Maglev trains fail?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Trains are a very common public transport in the vast majority of countries nowadays. They have been carrying people for ages, starting at the begging of the 19th century. There was no game-changers in the train industry since the introduction of electric engines. Apart from one idea; Maglev trains. Maglev is an abbreviation of two words, magnetic and levitating. Yes, such constructions are actually hovering above the ground. It is due to the magnetic force between the special tracks and trains. The concept sounds very futuristic but it is actually relatively old. The first patents, as well as prototypes, became real in the 1960s in the USA and Japan. How come that in 50-60 years of research Maglev trains are hardly anywhere?

The benefits

Let me begin with the positive side of Maglev trains which has tempted people to start developing them. One of the most annoying things about prevailing trains is the noise. Wheels constantly hitting the tracks. Magnetically levitated trains solve this problem entirely as they are above the ground. There is almost neither sounds nor vibrations with this technology. On top of that, it reduces the number of mechanical failures and bad weather-related issues. What is more? The incredible speed that it can reach. The speed record done by this train is 603 km/h. It is mind-blowing. Unfortunately, there is also another side to the coin.

The downsides

Everything has both pros and cons, Maglev trains are not any different. The crucial part of every single thing is the cost. In this case, it is extremely high. It is caused by the fact that in order to make these trains operate one needs a whole new infrastructure. It requires a new set of “tracks” power supplies and substations. Due to the innovative technology, nothing from the previous system can be used. The second greatest issue holding such projects back is energy consumption. “The maglev constitutes not only an extraordinarily costly but also an abnormally energy-wasting project, consuming in operation between four and five times as much power as the Tokaido Shinkansen,” (Hidekazu Aoki, 2018)

Conclusion

The idea for Maglev trains sounds very futuristic and tempting at first. Lack of noise and vibrations and very high speeds, on top of that it levitates. However, while exploiting the topic deeper we come across huge push away factors. It is extremely expensive as it requires not only different kinds of trains but also a whole new infrastructure. On top of that, it consumes massive amounts of energy. That is why it has failed so far and we probably need to wait quite some time for it to become more affordable.

Are robots taking over warehouses?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Warehouses are often associated with hard physical work and give workplace for many. They offer an easy salary for many people in need but that might change. Norwegian contract company AutoStore builds autonomous warehouses which replace humans with self-driving robots which can detect the location of the products, pick them up and then drop them off at the requested place. This innovative solution not only eliminates the need for hiring workers but also saves a great deal of space as it allows the warehouse structure to be taller instead of wider. The machines collect their packages from stacked shelves using an elevator mechanic which consequences in a cramped hall not wasting any area. This technique causes a double or even quadruple increase in the inventory capacity compared to a standard warehouse without wasting considerably as much space. AI programmed robots simply move around the storage on special tracks and are built to maneuver around each other in a coordinated order. With demand for these revolutionary systems constantly accelerating, revenue for AutoStore doubled and reached $85m only in the third quarter of 2021 despite the costs of production increasing and its biggest component aluminum, rising to a record high price prompting a slight margin fall. AutoStore battled their rival company-Ocado, in a legal dispute about patent infringement of their robotic systems resulting in a major win for the Norwegian giants, boosting their revenue. Now the warehouse manufacturer has a clear path to further revolutionize the robotic industry and expand their horizon. This might come at the cost of thousands losing their jobs, leaving them unemployed. Consequences might be huge if new work opportunities don’t come available for those left stranded by robots.
