Robots instead of waiters

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Have you ever wondered to be serviced by a robot in a restaurant? Is it crazy or it is just the future? Do robots have disadvantages or they are perfect for this job? Yet the waitressing profession is not based on just serving food or drinks, it is also well-developed chatting skills, and many more.

For the time being, robots in this profession do not work very well and are not able to exclude even 50% of working waiters. However, with human assistance, slowly this profession may need fewer workers. Besides, at the moment they have serious defects that make it impossible to take orders on their own. First, contrary to robots in factories, robots replacing waiters need charging because of their mobility. Unfortunately, the technology is not yet developed enough for robots to inform in advance about the state of their batteries or when finishing an order robot should not take another one, to avoid suddenly breaking contact with the guest and going to the charging station. Another disadvantage is excessive verbosity and lack of brevity in sentences or conversation. It has also been noted that robots do not serve customers who have an excessive amount of metal jewelry on.

All these strange errors that have not been predicted by the creators of such robots cause that, it takes longer to create fully robotic restaurants. I wonder if fast-food restaurants would have found robotization better…

The restaurant is called “Robotazia” and is located in Milton Keynes, UK.

As I work as a waitress, I think robots as waiters are definitely very interesting concept. As you said, I think my job is not only about taking orders and serving food, but also about connecting with people that visit the restaurant. On the other hand, being served by robot is for sure an experience itself, so I think it may work in the future. I guess we have to wait couple years for robots to improve and then we will see if they can replace a human being and to be honest I see the potential!

I believe it depends on the type of a restaurant. Sometimes, the service is just as important, as the quality of food.

Wow !! It’s great that such a thing exists. I wonder when the robots will serve the entire restaurant. One day I would like to experience and see how a robot serves me at a restaurant table. However, at the moment, I agree that robots are not able to replace a waiter, because it is a profession that requires integration with another person, which we are not able to achieve at the moment. I wonder why robots do not support people who wear an excessive amount of metal jewelry, this should be fixed.

Im my opinion, it is our future. I am sure that many professions, also waiters will be forgotten, and robots will work instead of people!

Robots came into our lives to simplify it, and they do a great job of it. But soon there may be such a problem as a lack of professions. There will be a shortage in the labor market, as robots will replace us in almost all professions.

I’m not very convinced about this idea at the moment. I’ve always found it very pleasant, during my visits in restaurants, to have some nice, conversation with the waiters as they are part of the place atmosphere.
