Criminologists are constantly inventing new ways of finding the truth behind a crime. This new technology lets them scan someone’s hair and make a 3D print of how they look simply based on their DNA structure.
This technology can be used in two ways the first one being that it can help in identifying unrecognizable murder victims or to make a portrait of the criminal.
Before this technology criminologists used to sketchbook the witness descriptions or use cranial reconstruction but neither of these methods was 100 percent accurate. The same cannot be told about this method, the scans show a perfect reconstruction of someone’s face.
This technology isn’t perfect yet but it’s been in development for over 20 years already and in 2017 it’s been used to help solve an old murder case of Shaquana Caldwell by identifying her face which helped in catching the murder after he left no trace of himself.
The algorithm as of now still needs a lot more data to be put into more daily practical uses. The data must be collected from different populations and ethnicities to have a large gene collection for more precise scans and reconstructions. For now, the program works only in the countries for which the data has been gathered and researchers say that for it to become more universal they will need 5-10 years of data gathering to do.
The program is as useful as it has some unfortunate defects. The program cannot tell a person’s gender or if the subject has any scars nor if the person has any tattoos or wears makeup. The program’s function is to solely gather data from DNA and reconstruct the face’s appearance based on ancestry.
Nonetheless, these small drawbacks criminologists are saying the program once fully developed will become the main tool used by all criminologists around the world for solving crimes.
Pretty interesting idea and quite a long one. Perhaps, this program is going to be useful someday, but I am wondering how people are going to react.
As for myself, I do hope that this app will be helpful and not be used for “evil” intentions.

Very interesting idea. I think that in the future it will be a really helpful program for police. Even though it cannot predict if a certain person has face tattoos or use makeup this program can make a big change in chasing unidentified criminals.

It’s like in mission impossible. If this succeeds it could become very useful
