CV-2X Technology in Vehicles. Will it Finally Reduce Transportation Catastrophes?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Every day that passes by, there are drivers, taxis, or pedestrians on the sidewalk who seems to be unaware of their surroundings and seconds later, resulting in disasters that can’t be changed. As a soon-to-be driver entering the roads of transportation, I suggest that having an extra layer of technological protection would save the life of many beginners, intermediate, or even expert drivers.

Manufacturers are trying to release what is called a CV-2X system which will ultimately connect vehicles with other vehicles, notify and react if there is any abnormal behavior. One major point to why I am eager for the production of CV-2X is sensors that can detect school buses or pedestrians from afar, giving the driver time to react. Pedestrians, especially kids, are very unaware of what’s happening on the road. Personally, I believe the health of others on the road, as well as oneself, are equally important, therefore a change in this aspect will enhance safety and give drivers the confidence they need.

A quote stated by the vice president at Harman International, Ram Iyer, is another argument to believe why I am in favor of the upcoming technological changes in the future. “Because the human attention span is decreasing, you’ll look for these technologies to save your life.” (Iyer, 2022). Human attention span from the looks of it might be minor, but it is critical when it comes to driving. A few seconds of delay off the roads and you can end up in an unwanted situation. Industries that use technology focused on issues like attention span will definitely save lives when put into use.

On the other hand, we need to think about the current situation of our society. With many new releases of technologies enhancing various aspects of life, I believe we are still at the stage of trial and error. Technology, especially the CV-2X system, has to be fully finalized without error. Solely relying on CV-2X for driving, do we ever really look at the system malfunction or incorrect detections. Those types of errors can never be caught by the driver’s eye and can cause fatal accidents all over again.

From my standpoint, the release of technology to solve major issues like car crashes, still have a lot to be improved on before utilizing it on a global scale. Whether or not technology is the solution to reduce the number of catastrophes on the roads, there are always some kinds of errors to be developed before use.

I feel like many people underestimate just how dangerous road traffic is – planes are statistically much safer than simple commuting.
The introduction of such technology is inevitable in the future – the question is though, how quickly can we get to an almost perfect algorithm that will significantly decrease road deaths and won’t bug?
As we’ve seen, there are still major things to be addressed – for one, the designers of Tesla’s autopilot have not included a horse-carriage model in the system, and Teslas have a hard time figuring out what is driving in front of them when faced with such a vehicle. Twitter has recently been filled with videos of electric cars switching their representation of a carriage back and forth between a cargo van and a bus.
I believe there’s a long way to go, but we’ll have to rely on technology to prevent accidents sooner than later.
