The New Fashion?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Trends in fashion are constantly subjected to dynamic changes. Due to the different creative minds of fashion designers, there are dynamic fashion styles and designs, which are displayed in fashion shows today. The modern Fashion Show has highly been influenced by technology, as fashion designers tend to make use of technological pieces of equipment to create their designs. The most recent example of this is Bella Hadid’s look during the Coperni fashion show at Paris Fashion Week 2022.

The model had her whole dress sprayed onto her body through the use of 3D technology, developed by Manel Torres. The model posed as men with paint canisters sprayed fabric paint onto her for about 15 minutes, creating a gorgeous white slip dress that perfectly clung to her body. The spray-on fabric is applied using the likes of aerosol tech, industrial sprayers, and 3D printing. The technology can be used in fashion to not only create dresses like done on Hadid, but also to repair any damaged items.

The question now is will there be more fashion shows in which technology creates designs instead of clothes being actually sewed? There is no doubt that AI and machine learning-driven innovation have become critical success factors for fashion design organisations in the twenty-first century. Technology may be supreme in fashion shows today, however fashion generally is dominated by sewed clothes. In my opinion, fashion is an aspect that can never be replaced by technology. I think technology is displayed in fashion just to show the capability of AI generally and not for people to actually start wearing the designs projected. I doubt robots can replace tailors. Therefore upon the advancement of technology in fashion industry, the demand for tailors and designers will never diminish. However, I’m sure there will be more fashion shows involving technology, just like the fashion show back in 1999, where robots sprayed paint on a models dress.

We can see that technology in fashion started a long time ago, but still hasn’t fully taken over the fashion industry. However, with AI taking over almost every aspect of our lives, will design created by technology be the new fashion of today or in the near future? Will people switch to wearing such clothes?

What I think of fashion is that it is weird in its essence. The fashion shows do not and never did represent what people wear on day to day basis. The fact that they added even more of a show to this already strange show is not really surprising to me. Even if we consider such clothes, they are unwearable, just the fact that they are sprayed on one’s body literally with no space between the skin and the cloth and in a stationary, unchanging position, would make it simply tear when doing anything that is not a super gentle walk around. Imho the fashion industry is an industry of marketing and promotion of certain agreed trends through films, tv, social networks, etc, creating a picture that has nothing to do with what people actually like and/or do wear. Though important to notice is that people’s minds can be easily impacted through media so that the crowd would wear stuff that they don’t like, or it’s uncomfortable but they still would wear it because everyone does so. We are humans – social creatures…

I am absolutely impressed by the diversity of fields where Artificial Intelligence could be applied. I believe that the fashion industry will go through even more advances in technological application. Of course, AI could never substitute the imagination and creativity of real designers, who put all of their passion into the works. However, I am poised to assume that the biggest advantage of technologically-created clothes is their eco-friendly approach. Just imagine how many resources and tissues are wasted every day as a result of the growing number of pieces of clothing produced by designers. The much tougher thing to consider is how big is the amount of clothes that ends up in landfills and which harm it poses to the environment. Thus, I am convinced that the adaptation of the fashion industry to the creation of new models of clothing by AI is extremely crucial since it could be sufficiently fruitful in dealing with environmental issues our population faces.

I am very excited about such incredible things that technology is capable of now. I watched this show and it’s really a breakthrough in fashion. Previously, this was only possible in science fiction films, but now all this is transferred to real life. But still, it seems to me that a complete transition to such a fashion is not possible. This dress, created using 3D printing and AI, was shown just to show a new technology and a new opportunity in general. It is quite possible that the organization will develop in this direction and there may be a whole fashion shows exclusively with similar outfits. But still, traditional shows, in my opinion, will not cease to occupy a key role.

What happened at the show with Bella Hadid, for me it’s something very beautiful, unusual and new. It was really very interesting. Yes, of course, artificial intelligence has been introduced into fashion before, but it was this dress that made a revolution in the fashion industry, which was talked about for a very long time. The fact that artificial intelligence and technology began to be introduced into the fashion industry is of course incredible. But everyone knows perfectly well that artificial intelligence will not replace real designers, tailors and fashion artists either now or in the near future. Perhaps one day people will succumb to the innovations of technology and for some time it will become a trend, as with artificial intelligence that draws pictures. But I doubt that it will be for a long time, people will rather remain connoisseurs of live fashion.

Technology may become more important to the fashion business in the future, but I don’t think it will totally replace current design and production techniques. Although technology may provide original and cutting-edge designs, the human touch and creativity of tailors and designers will always be prized in the fashion business. The usefulness and wearability of garments made using technology should also be taken into account. As of right now, it appears that fashion technology is mostly utilised to demonstrate the possibilities of AI rather than for regular usage. In the end, customer tastes and needs will determine the direction of fashion and how much technology will be used.
