Humanoids – should we be scared that robots will replace us?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Nowadays many people are scared that artificial intelligence is the undoing of humanity.  Fear that fictional reality from the movies in which robots take over the world discourages some from new technologies. Do we really have anything to be afraid of? Scientists claims that fortunately there are low chances that future will look like this from the movies.

So why should people think that robots do not threaten us? Humanoid robots work well in repetitive and functional tasks as controlling the traffic, but they perform not so good when there is a need to understand a context or nuance. Even though they have a lot of power, they are limited, because they are lack of real human emotions and empathy which is very often crucial when dealing with customers.  It is hard to imagine a situation in which a robot is dealing with a customer trying to convince them, that it understands what the customer is felling. For me it sounds like a nonsense.

Moreover robots are unable to build a relationship and  that excludes them from all services which are based on making a connection with a customer. In many companies for example in real estate agencies, clients need to feel that they can trust the company to which they entrust they future, so it is easy to guess that nobody would like to trust a robot. Building a rapport is the domain of people and apart from that people just prefer people. Even though technology is developing very fast and humanoids will be able to do more and more tasks, the crucial question is how far people will accept this.

Another important thing is that robots make only logic decisions. In most cases that will be an advantage, but sometimes people don’t like to think logically, they just want to let emotions get involved. Then the robots becomes powerless and a real human must step in.

In conclusion maybe more of humanity should treat robots as a help not as enemy which is trying to fill ours shoes. They are our rescue when there is a need to analyze an ocean of data and they could support as in much  more fields making humans stronger and more effective. However they will never be the same for us as real people.

Are you afraid that future from movies will become true and robots will replace humans?

I am strongly convinced that in the nearest future the number of robots, created by humanity, will considerably increase. And even though robots are likely to replace people at numerous jobs, for instance as cashiers or curriers, I am concerned that robots will always take the roles of subordinates, since they are delegated by humanity, to whom the superiority belongs. The incapability of making autonomous decisions makes robots powerless in taking control of people. Of course, something in the robotic system could go wrong and they could perform unpredictably, but I am poised to assume that being the creators of robots and knowing all the features of their systems from A to Z, human beings will probably be able to fix any errors or deviations and maintain their dominance over machines.

I think that humanoids can replace people in some cases, but not in all. For instance, when it comes to surgery, robot hands may not be shaking like human hands. However, in my opinion, robots, as you mentioned in your article, cannot express feelings, so they couldn’t be, for example, psychologists. They wouldn’t know what advice they should give. They only operate according to a pattern, so if a new circumstance arose, they wouldn’t know how to react to it. Therefore, I don’t think robots will overpower us. Moreover, if people constructing humanoids monitor them, there will be no incidents like in the movies.
