Wholesale usage of self-driving cars sooner that we’ve expected?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

History of autonomus vehicles (AV) is quite interesting. In 2010s companies like Mercedes, Ford or BMW were trying to develop self-driving cars, although unsuccessfully. A year ago closest of accomplishing this idea was Tesla with their economical car. However, still there has to be a human driver behind the wheel to control this car due to regulations.

Nevertheless, in 2021 Raquel Urtason has started company that can revolutionize AV market. This company, which is called Waabi, are developing self-driving truck but in slightly different way than it was done by the others. Instead of testing software in real world, Raquel and her team have decided to test it in another program. They are testing programmed AI in simulation which is magnificently similar to the open roads in the real world. Quoting Raquel Urtason: “Typically in the industry, you will build a prototype, collect data, make your software compatible and then you will discover issues and build the next generation a year and a half, or two years later. With Waabi our hardware design is done in simulation so you already built that next generation.” Because of this approach Waabi could be the first company to release their product before the competitors. What is more Waabi is working with truck drivers who know the industry and the market which gives Waabi competitive advantage. With different attitude presented by the CEO, this company can accomplish something amazing way before their competitors.

Waabi's first autonomous truck

I am writing about this company owing to their’s new approach which is very fascinating. We’re talking about new generation technology which apparently is going to speed up placing this product on the market. However, this “speeding up” doesn’t mean very soon, due to many hindrances ahead of Waabi. Firstly, regulations. In this field of business there are a lot of them. Primary thing is that people, especially government need to be convinced about safety of this technology which will not be easy. Another problem is how much money people will need to pay for that technology. If the price is too high, it will be unworthy business for buyers. We can speak about many advantages of such a solution but money is the most important factor in business.

On the other hand, technology is getting more and more advanced and people’s mindset is changing all the time so let me tell you some positive aspects of this technology which can help Waabi to overcome some obstacles. The most important of them is safety. Nowadays there are many drivers who are irresponsible on the road. Presence of refined AI system in AV could simply decrease a number of car accidents on the roads which is a very serious problem is our world. Another positive thing, that Waabi is trying to implement, is that those people who are now truck drivers would not have to resign from their foregoing work and retire peacefully.

Waabi’s simulator

In my opinion we won’t see Waabi’s self-driving cars on the roads very soon, although it will eventually happen in the future and I believe in Raquel’s company . Waabi is getting closer but this kind of product needs to be done as precisely as it’s possible so it must take some time to do it perfectly. How about you? What do you think about this kind of car on the roads? Will the Waabi succeed?

Why is there a shortage of electronic chipset?

Reading Time: 2 minutes
https://i0.wp.com/hardzone.es/app/uploads-hardzone.es/2020/05/TSMC-5-nm-Intel-AMD-NVIDIA.jpg?ssl=1

The impact of the current chipset shortage crisis has spread to a very wide world, from initially only affecting the electric car industry but the impact has now returned to the smartphone industry, tabs. Tablet, computer, game console to various IoT (Internet of Things) devices today,

Chipset shortage crisis this time. It has to say that it started from the trade war between two the most country like China and the United States in 2019, dragged on to the COVID-19 crisis in 2020 that affected the world. And it doesn’t seem to end easily, coupled with new demand that has arisen along the way in many industries. Including natural disasters to aggravate the production capacity even less Until the balance between demand and supply worsened as we can see today.

https://images.app.goo.gl/ieYLB9aEtPFx3iPK6

In addition, Due to less chip volume and higher product prices It’s not just businesses which are get this crisis by the shortage of semiconductors. Even ourselves as consumers will not be immune to the negative consequences of this crisis. One of them is that the price of goods has skyrocketed.

According to J.D. Power, the average US car price In the first quarter of 2021, it jumped 8.4% from a year earlier to about $37,200 per vehicle. will increase by at least 1-3% which can show that the price of chipset in the market has skyrocketed therefore it will raise a price rapidly.

And who will get benefit with this thing, the issue of the shortage of semiconductor have advantages and disadvantages , In my opinion is TSMC and Samsung which are biggest market in semiconductor it will invest abord to another country such as Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand which it will make competition between this two company will produce new product, new innovation, and new technology for example, semiconductor 5 nanometers or 3 nanometers technology so what do u think about this issue please comment down below.

Semiconductor race to the future

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Semiconductors – chips are an integral part of every electronic device. That’s why it’s so important for companies to ensure that their product is equipped with the latest version.

For this reason, many organizations are outdoing themselves in creating better and better chips. For many years, the largest semiconductor manufacturer has been the Taiwanese company TSMC. It supplies more than half of the world chip market. It it’s responsible for producing most of the chips for iPhones and Macs that Apple is so proud of. Few people have heard of it, but it is one of the largest companies in the world. In the field of pocket devices, supercomputers and automobiles, TSMC is a nearly a monopoly with more than 90% of the global chip supply. Another 8% of companies are supplied by Samsung chips. That leaves just 2% for dozens of other producers.

But that doesn’t stop other organizations from becoming competitors in the production of new and better semiconductors. The American company NVIDIA recently took away TSMC’s long-occupied first place on the list of most profitable companies. The competition is growing and more rivals are joining the race for the first 2 nm process. One of the biggest contenders is Samsung. As of today, only Samsung and TSMC produce and sell 3 nm chips. Both companies expect to begin mass production of 2nm chips by 2025.

Now Rapidus is joining the game – the newly formed company is funded by a number of organizations such as Toyota, Sony and Kioxia. However, the biggest donor is the Japanese government itself since company’s headquarters will be in Japan. It will allocate about $500 million to help the new company develop. After a stagnant engineering market and a shortage of skilled workers, Japan is looking for prospects in semiconductor manufacturing. The country is also hoping to forge closer ties with the US, as Rapidus will work with IBM to develop next-generation, sub-2-nanometer chips. This move puts Japan in the team of United States in their technological war with China. Results of this colaboration will be visible in 2027, two years after estimated mass production of TSMC’s and Samsung’s samiconductors. In technological field it’s a lifetime. Probably Rapidus will not be a succes at first, but it may have a potential in future projects and development.

There is still a long way to go before mass production of 2-nm semiconductors. However, a bright future full of potential lies ahead. Battery life of smartphones equipped with such a chip will quadruple. Laptop functions will speed up dramatically. The same goes for object detection in autonomous vehicles, which will reduce possibility of accidents on the roads. On top of that, the carbon footprint will be much smaller. It is believed that 2nm could be useful in areas such as 5G internet, big data centres and even quantum computing.  One thing is certain, whoever develops a good-quality 2-nanometer semiconductor first will gain great strength in the technology field.

Xi Jinping’s betrayal of Deng Xiaoping’s principals

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Deng Xiaoping has introduced chinese people to prosperity and bright future by his reforms. The economic growth was outstanding: ”Since China began to open up and reform its economy in 1978, GDP growth has averaged over 9 percent a year, and more than 800 million people have lifted themselves out of poverty.”-“worldbank” Chinese communist party of that period was cappble of implementing free market essences without damaging the socialist values of People’s Republic of China, although, some experts of the ideology were not happy about it at all: “Deng famously said that to open the economy, the party would have to “let some people get rich first.” This was one of the most creative policies ever advocated by a Communist Party leader, as it was in direct contradiction to the party’s founding aim.”-“Bao Tong”. In my opinon, the ideological part is not very important since we can see that this strategy was successful at improving the lives of the proletariat/workers.

Deng Xiaoping | Biography, Reforms, Transformation of China, & Facts | Britannica

Xi Jinping has been a president for more than 9 years and provided to China a lot but since 2020 we can see the dramatical change in its system. Pandemic struck China like nothing else – more than a million chinese people have died due Covid-19 and the government response was instant: lockdowns, obligatory vacination and other restrictions. What could go wrong? The worst thing that can happen in this situation is that the ruling power would start to exploit its ability to limit people’s freedom in the name of defeating the virus. Xi’s ”zero-Covid” policy makes it impossible for small and average bussinesses to be profitible.

Downfall of a recent-built AI technology?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Let’s ask the small questions first. Have you ever programmed? It’s completely fine if you’ve never touched the surface of coding, but if you program, imagine this.. you are programming hundreds and thousands of lines of code at the tip of your fingertips. You end the day with a big ol’ yawn, get in the shower, and the shower thoughts commence. What if you can implement AI-Technology to make it code for you based on a readable language prompt?

https://voicebot.ai/2021/07/01/openai-and-github-unveil-new-copilot-ai-assistant-for-coding/

Crazy enough, technology is already 1 step ahead of us. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, along with Github, recently released a self-generating computer code AI, called CoPilot. This innovative technology simply lets you type in any natural language prompt and convert it into lines of code across any programming language. Whether it is python, java, C#, or C++, CoPilot finishes the job you needed to be done. The program as of right now on the GitHub website only charges users $10/month or $100/year, with a bonus of 60 trial-days free of charge. For university students like us, CoPilot is 100% free.

“Early Bird” Statistics

Within only a month after releasing the AI in early June of 2022, Github sparked over 400,000 subscribers for CoPilot. Before that, over 1.2 million signed up during the preview period. According to ciodive.com, within the first few months of release, Microsoft is already aiming at taking a slice of the software market, which is set to grow around 21% by the end of this year (Torres, 2022).

While CoPilot AI is still in its early development stages, writing up to 35%-40% of your code is an immense percentage when programming longer projects. Furthermore, not only does CoPilot generate code based on your prompt, it allows code interpretation, meaning that the AI can explain unusual code in natural language.

What’s Happening?

So, what’s the catch? I’ll let you imagine this as well. Imagine working on your own programming language, working for years on end, and finally being able to publish your program to the public. Everything is going great and you’ve feel like you’re on top of the world, until a big company creates an AI. The AI uses your programming language in the process, and does not give you any credit for any of the original codes you’ve done, how would you feel?

That’s exactly what Matthew Butterick felt, a programmer, about the newly-released AI. Mr. Butterick is a programmer, writer, designer, and lawyer, who is suing the AI founders and filing lawsuits. Mr. Butterick claims that the AI is full of piracy due to their approach of the AI, which was analyzing billions of existing code on the internet. AI is not original, as claimed by Mr. Butterick. Even though on the surface level it seems alright, the AI does not acknlowedge the programmers who built the original code on the internet, in which Mr. Butterick is lawsuiting for. On the other hand, Microsoft’s counter-argument on these reasons was that shortly releasing CoPilot, Github’s chief executive claim’s that the codes that the AI interprets are “fair-use”.

Personally on some aspects I stand on Matthew Butterick’s side due to the fact that programmer’s had actually taken years to fully make their code useable, and just for an AI to fully use it without recognition of the programmer, it ruins their recognition. However, at the end of the day, is anyone really original as they claim to be? Let me possibly ask you and everyone else that programs:

Are you where you are today, a successful programmer, maybe because you’re a natural, or also because of looking/studying other people’s code examples?

My argument against Matthew Butterick’s argument is simple:

if human’s can use other people’s code for personal benefit and without explicit consent, so can AI.

Im highly interested in your thoughts on this. Is CoPilot’s approach on interpreting code morally right? Feel free to counter-argue my opinions, I am eager to read all your opinions on it 🙂

European Union rewrites the rules of the internet

Reading Time: 2 minutes

For many years now, smaller companies had a hard time competing with the massive tech giants owning the market, so the European lawmakers decided that it’s time for a change, and time to make it easier for small companies to grow.

On the November 1st, the new European Union law – called Digital Market Act (DMA) – came to life, forcing the leading firms such as Apple, Google and Meta to be more open and to let other companies connect with their products more easily. The DMA will bring major changes to what people can do with their devices when it comes to apps from different sources. The new director of the EU office in San Francisco, George de Graaf says “If you have an iPhone, you should be able to download apps not just from the App Store but from other app stores or from the internet”.

Persoon met vergrootglas kijkt naar de Digital Markets Act

The general goal of the DMA is to define when a large online platfrom qualifies as a “gatekeeper” and take appropiate action. Big companies whose position can grant them the power of making their own rules, and thus creating a bottleneck in digital economy are qualified as such “gatekeepers”. To overcome this situation, the DMA defines a set of rules that these companies have to follow, or face being fined up to 10% of the company’s worlwide turnover or even 20% when it comes to reapeted violations.

What will be the actual benefits of the DMA? First of all, it will prevent big companies from favoring their own products and allow smaller companies to grow. It will eliminate unfair prevention of installing apps from other sources, thus allowing users for more variety. In addition, users will have an option to choose their default browser or the voice assistant of their choice. Additionaly, the gatekeepers will have to share the data that they have collected with other business users and they won’t be able to track consumer activity for targeted advertising without users’ consent.

The DMA moved into implementation phase now and it will start to apply in six months. The companies are expected to comply with the requirements in mid-2024

Personally, I think that the rules of DMA are a little bit harsh, big companies like Apple or Google worked for many years to achieve their success and it’s understandable that they want to show off their accomplishments. European Union wants to expand the market but giving away the data collected by gatekeepers and reducing their position on the market isn’t the right choice. My other concern would be the safety of our devices. For example, Apple for many years has been very active in monitoring the apps that are being uploaded to App Store, in contrary to Google Play, where you can find some apps that don’t look particularly safe.

Digital Markets Act summed up in a YouTube video:

Sand battery – is it really a game changer?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

With people being more and more aware of global warming and what impact it already has on our planet, we can observe intensified search for efficient green sources of energy. In fact, we had many interesting solutions for years now, but there is a reason why they are still not the main suppliers of electricity all over the globe. Being dependent on weather conditions is a disadvantage of some of the most popular ones, for example, wind farms and solar panels. In that case in order to be prepared for those cloudy days we need to store somewhere generated energy. The problem is that the basic lithium-ion batteries are degrading and the process of their creation is not really “eco” so we pretty much miss the whole point.

That’s where the sand battery comes in – an innovation introduced by finish company Polar Night Energy. It started to gain popularity and interest around the world thanks to articles published by BBC writers Matt McGrath (July 2022) and Erika Benke (November 2022). With the ongoing war in Ukraine and the recently finished COP27 optimism surrounding this new solution shouldn’t be a surprise for us. But is it really a game changer and does it solve all the problems we are facing now with lithium-ion batteries?
First, let’s understand how a sand battery works. It is nothing more than a silo filled with pipes and hundreds of tons of sand. Thanks to TES (Thermal Energy Storage) technology and amazing physical attributes of sand that with proper isolation can maintain a temperature of 600 degrees Celsius for months, this innovation can store heat produced by electricity from solar panels and wind farms. It can be used to warm up the water during shortages of electricity due to for example weather conditions. It is pretty obvious that this solution is very cheap, eco-friendly, and easy to apply in any part of the world. In fact, it is already being used in the Vatajankoski power plant, where one sand battery provides heat for about 100 homes and a public swimming pool.

There is one issue though that can make us question this innovation. In fact, the term “battery” is misleading because sand batteries cannot store electricity. Transformation of heat energy back to electricity comes with huge losses and is just not cost-effective. Of course, this solution is still very promising and needed especially in countries placed in the northern part of the globe. Nevertheless, until Polar Night Energy finds a way to convert heat to electricity with much more efficiency, it is tough to call their innovation a game changer because it just does not solve one of the main problems. But who knows, maybe it is just a matter of time.

Sand battery is an eco-friendly and budget-friendly technology that should interest facilities and cities around the world which want to become greener and at the same time save money on heating. Though it does not revolutionize the energy industry, it is very encouraging to see that we keep on finding new ways to prevent global pollution. In front of Polar Night Energy now stands a very challenging task of scaling up and It is gonna be very interesting to follow their further development.

Walmart’s Terrifying Metaverse Experience

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Do you hate going outside? Are you an introvert who prefers to avoid human contact? Do you wish to stay at home but miss the experience of doing groceries? Worry not because Walmart is on it.

Walmart VR shopping experience

Walmart, Inc., was founded in 1962 and focused its early growth in rural areas, avoiding direct competition with retail giants such as Sears and Kmart. Walmart became one of the largest grocers in the United States within a decade of opening the combination of grocery and merchandise Supercenters. Emphasizing customer attention by implementing direct mail advertising, low-cost imports, and focusing on the efficiency of its distribution networks through regional warehousing allowed Walmart to become the largest retailer in the United States in 1990. Walmart’s revenues doubled by 1995 after the owner’s passing, and by 1999 the company had become the largest private employer in the world, as well as the largest corporation in the world.

The company’s development has reached its peak, and now to stay at the top, they are trying to come up with more innovative and shocking customer-gaining solutions. While researching this topic, I have met with a question: “Walmart is joining the metaverse. Are we ready?” – Are we ready for what? Does Walmart’s marketing team think that people do groceries for fun? Is this really where this world is headed? It’s not progress; it’s regress. All this makes me wonder what the Walmart shopper wants to buy in a virtual world anyway?

According to William White, Walmart’s marketing chief, the company will use Roblox as a testing ground as it considers other moves in the metaverse. The experiences, according to him, were created with the next generation of consumers in mind, notably Gen Z, who is widely seen as being between the ages of 25 and under. White stated that the business hopes to gain knowledge from the collaboration.

Walmart Land on Roblox

Currently, Walmart Land and Walmart’s Universe of Play are the two primary game experiences available on the Roblox platform. The store is also experimenting with new methods of customer contact, especially in light of how the pandemic has altered consumer purchasing patterns and increased their use of social media, apps, and gaming websites. Walmart is attempting to bridge the gap between the online and offline worlds. A music festival featuring Madison Beer, Kane Brown, and Yungblud will perform during the virtual event “Electric Fest” in October on Walmart Land; a ton of different games and a shop of virtual goods, or “verch,” that mirrors what customers could find in Walmart’s physical stores and on its website are all part of the retail giant’s first excursion into the virtual world. The big-box store has also held live events that were shoppable and streamed on TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube. Additionally, it has launched a service on Pinterest that uses augmented reality to let customers envision how furniture or other decors might appear in their homes.

For the time being, Walmart won’t profit from its immersive experiences. Instead, players may use tokens and other prizes from Roblox to purchase virtual goods. National brands, such as Skullcandy headphones and the toy company L.O.L. Surprise!, were integrated into the experiences based on demand from the younger gaming demographic of Roblox. However, White suggested that in the future, Walmart may profit from it by charging a brand for inclusion or by attempting to convert users’ virtual experiences into in-person or online shop visits.

Walmart Land has a virtual changing room featuring clothing from its exclusive fashion lines, such as Free Assembly, as well as an obstacle course made up of gigantic goods from the retailer’s Gen Z-focused cosmetic brands, such as Bubble skin care products and Uoma by Sharon C makeup.

During the Covid epidemic, Roblox attracted a lot of new users and made its stock market debut. The gaming platform reportedly saw an increase in daily active players from 32.6 million in 2020 to over 52 million. Although the firm claims it is drawing users of all ages, traditionally, it has attracted more young children and teenagers. Although Roblox has a market cap of roughly $21.2 billion, its shares have fallen by about 66% so far this year.

We constantly risk becoming lost in the future race, especially when the newest technological revolution is powering it. We can get caught up in designing these next-generation products and experiences, as we have all seen before, only to find that no one actually wants them. It appears that no one wants to be left behind – but are we really clear about where we are going with the metaverse?

A new feature on Google maps – ,,eco-friendly routes”

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Google Maps is a mapping and navigation application, which is one of the most used by people worldwide. Basically, the app shows us how to get from point A to point B, by any possible form of transport like car, bike, train or even by foot. We can choose if we would like to get there as soon as possible, for example using toll roads, avoiding traffic jams or if time does not matter to us as much and we would like to save some money using national roads.

Plik:Google Maps Logo 2020.svg – Wikipedia, wolna encyklopedia

Recently Google introduced to us a new feature on their app, which is eco-friendly routes. This function helps us to choose the most environmental friendly route based on fuel consumption. All we have to do is to set our destination, then open options in the Google Maps app and look for ,,Prefer fuel-efficient routes” option. After enabling that, we only need to set which type of fuel our car uses, and we’re done. According to Google, this feature is available in almost 40 countries in Europe including Poland and by using it we lower our expenses on fuel, which is expensive at the moment and reduce CO2 emissions like in the United States of America and Canada, where that system was already successful reducing half million metric tons of CO2, which compares to removing 100 thousand cars from the roads. This is not the first time when Google encourages people to go more eco-friendly. They already have complex cycling routes and paths for pedestrians, a system helping to get to our destination using public transport or an option showing us where the closest EV (electrical vehicle) charging stations are located. All of this is a part of the Google campaign for this year which is to make people consider their choices and choose those that are more eco-friendly.

I think this a superb idea in an important issue. We have to remember that environmental problems are relevant to all of us and every initiative that tries to fix them does matter on a grand scale. I am looking forward to seeing more companies following the same path.

Can an image created by AI still be considered as art?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Development of AI image generators accelerated a lot in recent years, currently, we can choose from various options like DALL-E 2, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion. The level of advancement is incredible, you can create whatever you can imagine moreover these programs potentially can create something which no man could imagine, and here we come to the subject of the article.

On August 25 Jason M. Allen won the Colorado State Fair’s annual art competition there would be nothing strange about it if it weren’t for the fact that his work has been created by Artificial intelligence. Other participants accused Allen of cheating, arguing that he break the rules, but Allen justified what he had done. A.I. was used to construct his work, which was submitted under the name “Jason M. Allen via Midjourney,” he said, and he denied misleading anybody about its creation.“I won’t apologize for it, he declared, I won and followed all the regulations” but my goal is not to prove the author’s guilt or innocence I would like to focus on what can be considered art these days.

Most of the objections to the author focused on the statement that a computer-generated image cannot be considered art because it was not created by a human being. Similar opinions could be heard at the time when cameras and taking pictures with them became widespread. Many painters recoiled at the invention of the camera, which they saw as a debasement of human artistry. (Charles Baudelaire, the 19th-century French poet and art critic, called photography “art’s most mortal enemy.”) In the 20th century, digital editing tools and computer-assisted design programs were similarly dismissed by purists for requiring too little skill of their human collaborators. Some artists defended Mr. Allen by arguing that using artificial intelligence (A.I.) to create a piece was identical to using Photoshop or other digital image-manipulation tools and that human creativity was still needed to come up with the appropriate prompts to produce the art.

In my opinion, a lot of people who criticize images generated by AI think that the image generates itself without human help, from a certain point of view this is right, but I would treat such programs as a tool in the hands of the artist just as the chisel is a necessary tool for the sculptor. AI artists are simply the result of technological and cultural developments around the world. But I also see a potential problem with the development of this technology, already artificial intelligence can affect the dissemination of information in the form of deep fakes, which are already indistinguishable to the untrained eye, the same danger exists in the case of images that will be created by artificial intelligence, for example, falsification of photographs forgery of works of art or intellectual works.

In conclusion, I believe that machine-generated images as much as possible can be considered art, it is simply a new, emerging branch of art.

Finally, I would like to show you what can be created with this program in five minutes. below is the text I used to get this image.

Great Cathedral in which people are located. It is bright, the cathedral is built in a modern style”
