I don’t think that we will see fully autonomous cars in the very near future, as the technology is in its early days. The numbers of for instance Waymo seem compelling but i think it definitely requires further development. Here is one example of that, when self-driving Tesla has stopped in the middle of the road and caused a crack-up (https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-stops-tunnel-pileup-accidents-driver-says-fsd-enabled-video-2023-1?IR=T), but it’s one of the problems. Another one is the lack of the regulations, how should be responsible for an eventual crash? A manufacturer? or the owner? Maybe in the future we will see some solutions for that.
I don’t think that fully autonomous cars are very promising for now at least because the level at which they would have to operate on would be very very extreme in order to be fully autonomous. Perhaps complicated coding in the future that will allow the car to be fully autonomous will be so energy demanding the cars will have a much lower travel range because they will need to contain supercomputers inside them powered that need to process a lot of data as quick as possible.
If you are going to free human from actualy driving the vechicale what difference does it make if you take a bus or train? This technology is trying to solve problems for which we already have great answer which is Public Transport!
