Artificial Intelligence impacts almost every field we can think of. The same things happens in the case of the sports world. From analyzing player performance to predicting game outcomes, AI is transforming the way we watch, play, experience or even think about sports. I want to draw attention to some of the most important ways that AI is affecting and assisting the sports industry.
I would like to start with the topic of how AI helps to improve players or athletes in the training. Nowadays, almost every professional sports club uses special apps, which helps them to track the players performance during their training or in a match. By doing so, they can check all the players metrics and then decide in which field they still need to improve or what to do to avoid a potential injury. It also plays an important part, when a player comes back after an injury. Doctors and physiotherapists can track the pace of the recovery and then use indicators to choose the right loads and form of therapy.
Second of all, AI plays a big role in refereeing, in some major sports. For example tennis, where AI-powered systems are being used to assist referees in making calls on close line calls, such as foot faults, and also to track the ball’s trajectory. Or in football, where Video Assistant Referee (VAR) occurs in most of the major leagues and tournaments, helping with offsides or tough calls. We have to remember that referee’s job is stressful and human errors occurs, but by using Artificial Intelligence, we minimize them and the controversy associated with it.
And last but not least I wanted to mention, is the way AI is improving broadcasting of sport events. Artificial Intelligence is an amazing tool to collect all the necessary data, which then can be used by broadcasters to highlight key stats, patterns or even real-time predictions of results. Last year Microsoft introduced a tool called ,,Goal Probability” for Spanish football league, which is used to calculate the percentage chance of a goal based on distance between the ball and goal, a player’s line of sight, while shooting and their distance to the defenders. I think it’s a fantastic way to interact with viewers and a fresh way to watch a football broadcast.

I really love how AI has been incorporated in sports especially when it comes to football. The introduction of VAR has become so helpful making the game more interesting and fair in all prospects
. I might say it become the spectator’s and referees’ third eye.
Utilizing AI to help sports teams to reflect on their performance will be a standard in the future across all sports. The teams that will adapt to it the fastest will enjoy a great insight into the possible small improvements into their tactics. This development can already be seen greatly in the eSports industry. In the last few years, many eSports organizations have already started hiring data scientists to aid with the analysis of team and player performance.
Personally I love how match statistics were improved by AI. It makes watching a game of football or tennis whole different experience and in case of coaching I think that kind of optimalisation, when you know your errors and technique better, is so much time saving and keeps improving athletes. Also helps to prevent misunderstandings so it is an additional plus for referees.
This is a great feature for football funs. AI improved statistics so that people who do not have so much time to follow their favourite teams or players still can have in-depth sight into their game. The help that technology provides to the referees is also crucial as it mitigates controversy around referees decisions. The overall look of AI in sports is very promising.
As a football fan and a person who is interested in technology these type of innovation as VAR or various of unusual statistics is a great thing to watch. It’s making football more fair and that’s the most important things. Also in case of offsides is a life-saving solution for the referees when the system analysing the possibility of offside even to 1 cm! For human’s eye it isn’t possible. So yes, implementing AI into sports’ fields is an amazing solution.
The use of AI in football is a great thing that changed the results of games completely. However I believe that it still needs to advance as VAR system is not 100% accurate and can make mistakes which might have big impact on important games.
It’s incredibly amazing how AI is changing the sports business in so many ways, from improving player development to reducing officiating errors due to human error to providing a more interesting viewing experience. An excellent example of how AI technology is being used to provide real-time analyses and forecasts that up the excitement level of sporting events is Microsoft’s Goal Probability tool. I’m interested to see what new developments artificial intelligence will soon bring to the realm of sports.
