For every skiing geek previous seasons weren’t fruitful. Many skiing trips has to be canceled and spontaneous weekends in polish or Czech mountains are becoming nearly impossible. So what is the future of our beloved sport?
Since 1991 the temperature in Europe has been increasing 0,5 degree per decade faster than other regions which is consequence of our thoughtless behaviour. Just in France winters are 8 degrees warmer than 30 years ago. In Forbes report, the university of Grenoble research shows that through 70 years period in France 50% of ski resorts has been closed because lack of snow. Border of snow line which is a height above sea level when snow lays whole year has increased tremendously and till the end of century 93% of glaciers in alps would disappear which was the only alternative for warm winters but what is sad….there wouldn’t be colder ones.
If somebody is up to date with skiing word cup championships the situation is disappointing for fans, because since beginning of 22/23 season 8 races were cancelled due to lack of snow.

But you may say that there are snow cannons working so it is not that bad…
Of course, they exist but to produce 15cm of snow it takes 200 000 litres of water per day and consumes loads of energy. And after all they require temperature below 0 to operate. There are some chemicals that increase melting temperature such as potassium acetate but they can be dangerous for environment and are usually restricted.
Personally I was shocked looking at these data but what has opened my eyes the most was the fact that I experienced it firsthand and saw the effect of global warming which many deny and undermine. So if you want to experience skiing, I advice it as soon as possible.

It’s been a long time since I’ve experienced winter as it was in my parent’s childhood. It is significantly important to approach global warming issues comprehensively and consciously undertaking step-by-step changes. It’s a sophisticated issue that demands the cooperation of many interdisciplinary scientists such as economists, sociologists, psychologists, astrologers, and climatologists. Such cooperation should guarantee objectivism and should favor finding out the best solution to mitigate the detrimental effects of global warming and simultaneously prevent from taking over freedom of choice, and deterioration in the well-being of humanity.
Skiing has been my favorite sport since childhood. The situation described in the blog is really disappointing. It is really sad that further generations will probably not be able to try such a wonderful sport. Every time it is breathtaking to see a spectacular view of snowy mountains and white trees. People have to take drastic measures in order to minimize the effect of global warming.
I’ve experienced lack of snow and overall lack of winter to be honest this year. Skiing slopes were barely ridealbe and the temperature was very high as it was spring. It felt very dissappointing to see this years conditions in the mountains. We have to think more about the environment and our future to prevent it from going towards wrong direction. It is a pitty that we have to forget about winter at least for next couple of years if even someone remebers it.
People underestimate problems until they really see them, i think that’s how are things going with global warming. I am skier myself and it’s heartbreaking for me to read that. We have to be more aware, whole world needs to be.
The problem of global warming is increasing and increasing and now it is even more visible than ever. I wish that we had more snow as it used be in my childhood as the winter does not feel the same anymore. We should focus more on limiting our carbon footprint if we want to have a stable future.
I believe global warming is inevitable, it’s just a matter of time till when, unless the future generations are at least twice as conscious about it as ours.
This is a great post and a reminder of what our climate change is doing to winter sports. Let’s take action and make changes to save our skiing experience!
Unfortunately, we already can see the consequences of global warming, which is a scary reminder – of where our inaction can lead us. All humanity must make an effort to stop this, or in the other case, we will see only more photos like this in near future.
This is very sad, I’ve been skiing since I was really young and seeing how the mountains look now compared to how they used to look is breaking my heart
Climate change is a very serious problem, and it is really heart-breaking to see its effects. I love snowboarding and such consequences of this issue really disappoint me.
