Future of self-driving trucks

There has been a lot of attention given to the use of autonomous vehicles in recent years, with self-driving trucks being a particularly noteworthy example. These trucks have the potential to transform the way goods are transported and could have a major impact on the global economy. This article will examine the potential benefits and challenges of autonomous trucks and consider what the future may hold for this innovative technology.

Autonomous trucks hit the fast lane

First of all, autonomous vehicles can help transportation businesses considerably save expenses, which is one of its key advantages. By eliminating the need for a human driver, companies could save on salaries, benefits, and training costs. According to the New York Times, in early 2022 Kodiak Robotics in partnership with U.S Express tested self-driving trucks with so-called “safe drivers” monitoring them. The result showed that the route that normally takes up to 10 days for a standard truck could be done in only 5 days. It confirmed that autonomous trucks can drive for much longer periods as they don’t require multiple breaks for drivers, leading to higher efficiency and productivity. However, safe drivers had to take control of the truck multiple times on route which proves that as for now the software is still in development and not ready for fully autonomous use. Moreover, companies are now looking to only use self-driving trucks on highways as it is much easier and safer to configure rather than bringing them into cities. The trucks would reach so-called “transfer hubs” in which the cargo would be transferred to standard trucks and then driven the last kilometres by regular drivers to the final destination.

Another potential benefit of autonomous trucks is their ability to address the shortage of drivers in the transportation industry. The trucking industry faces challenges in attracting and retaining qualified drivers due to the demanding nature of the job, which involves extended periods on the road. According to The American Trucking Association, the industry is short about 78,000 drivers which is the second-highest level on record after 81,258 in 2021. The situation in Europe is quite the same, according to the International Road Transport Union, without any action Europe could lack 2 million drivers by 2026. Autonomous trucks have the potential to alleviate this shortage by allowing companies to transport goods on long-distance routes by trucks itself, whereas, at the same time, human drivers will still be needed for the first and last kilometres of travel, preventing potential job losses. In most cases drivers are paid by travelled kilometres. Therefore it will also be crucial for governments and companies to ensure proper wages to retain current drivers due to the shorter distances.

The adoption of autonomous trucks could also bring environmental benefits. These vehicles can be programmed to maximize fuel efficiency, resulting in lower carbon emissions and a reduced impact on the environment. In addition, they have the potential to enhance safety on the roads. Human error is a major factor in accidents, and the use of self-driving trucks could significantly decrease the number of accidents caused by driver fatigue and distraction.

Overall, I believe that the future of autonomous trucks is bright, but it will require the development of new technologies, infrastructure, and regulatory frameworks to fully realize their potential. As these challenges are addressed, we can expect to see significant advancements in the transportation industry, with autonomous trucks playing a major role in shaping the future of transportation.

Globally, 430 million people suffer from a hearing loss that is incapacitating, with 70 million of those people being deaf, according to the World Health Organization. The development of XRAI Glass represents a breakthrough for the deaf community, as it allows them to fully participate in social interactions and better understand their surroundings. Before the invention of this technology, deaf individuals often struggled to understand conversations, leading to feelings of isolation and exclusion.

Unfortunately, the app is currently only available on android devices, but I believe that it will change soon, allowing more and more people to use this technology.

Lab-grown blood is now being tested on people in the world-first clinical trial

Recently the world’s first clinical trial has been conducted, in which lab-grown blood was injected into two people, according to the researchers from nhsbt. This is a huge step to examine if lab-grown cells are safe and effective for the human body and if they could be used in the future. The main goal is to manufacture blood cells for people with various blood disorders such as sickle or for those who need a transfusion of a rare type of blood.

How is blood manufactured?

After the blood is collected from volunteers, it is filtered to pick stem cells that are capable of becoming red blood cells. In the next step selected stem cells grow and become red blood cells in a laboratory. The whole process takes about 3 weeks and results in the growth of cells from 1 million stem cells to around 50 billion red blood cells which are later filtered to 15 billion capable of use, according to BBC.

As of now, only 2 volunteers have taken part in the trial, although it is predicted that more than 10 people will participate. They have been closely monitored and none of them have shown any unwanted effects, allowing the trial to continue. Every participant will get 2 infusions of blood each containing 5-10 milliliters at least 4 months apart. One donation will contain natural blood and the other lab-grown blood which scientists have marked with radioactive substance to track how long it will survive in a human system as part of the clinical trial. The goal for lab-grown cells is to last longer than those produced by the human body. That is possible because lab-grown red blood cells are freshly made and should last a full 120 days in a human body, whereas typical blood donation contains a mix of old and young cells which together last only around 120 days. This may not seem like a huge difference, but in reality, it allows less frequent and smaller donations in the future.

In conclusion, I believe that the whole trial is a significant step in the future development of medicine. It will allow artificial blood to substitute natural blood and will limit the number of donors necessary to upkeep the current demand for red blood cells. It needs to be noted that such procedures and further testing will only be possible if appropriate funding is provided, which is difficult to predict as medical research is an underfunded field of science. Lab-grown blood cells will be not only unaffordable to the average person but also inaccessible without the right reasoning. If these tests succeed and become publicly available they will have a life-changing effect on millions of people all around the world and will save countless lives.

Will the new photo-sharing app BeReal stay successful?

Is this up-and-coming app a temporary success or is it here to stay?

BeReal is a photo-sharing app that was launched in December 2019. It was invented by former GoPro employee Alexis Barreyat along with Kevin Perreau. The concept of the app is to take a picture simultaneously with the front and back camera (with no ability to add a filter) at a random time of day when a notification is sent. This encourages the users to be true and „real” with their friends and allows them to share a moment of their day with others. 

 The app started to gain fame slowly from the start of 2021. The growth of the app came mostly from word-to-mouth advertisement, the more friends you have on the app the more fun it will be. Another unique technique used to boost the popularity of the app was the usage of college ambassadors. They were invited to promote the app across their campus for small gratification which allowed BeReal to ultimately grow in the United States. This was a huge step forward because the app started to be recognized by new investors. Already in June company Andreessen Horowitz invested $30 million in BeReal.

As of today, according to research from Sensor Tower, BeReal has seen a rise of active users by 2253% since January 2022, it also reached 53 million installs worldwide across the App Store and Google Play. However, only 9% of the users on Android open the app every day as of the third quarter of 2022. This percentage compared to the apps such as Instagram (39%), TikTok (29%) or Twitter (18%) is relevantly low. In most cases, active users are a better indicator to evaluate if the app stays successful rather than downloads since some people might just download an app out of curiosity. It must be taken into account that the majority of people in the United States use IOS instead of android therefore some statistics may be inaccurate. 

In the past month, the rapid growth and innovative concept of the app made it recognizable to the competition. In July Instagram started to experiment with its Dual Camera future. Moreover, recently TikTok adopted its new future TikTok Now which is the knockoff version of BeReal. The ideas aren’t patents so BeReal can’t do much about being copied. The app can only hope to keep up with its users and their demands and some wonder whether it will stand the test of time or will the leading apps take initiative.   

I think that BeReal might have a problem staying successful. The percentage of daily active users is a very important factor that can indicate the direction that the app might go. The current 9% of daily active users might not be enough for the app to maintain its hype. I have been using this app for the last couple of weeks and I have observed that users over time are beginning to be less active. I think that because of the randomness of the time when an application asks you to take a photo, it is hard for people to get into the habit of using it every day. Moreover, a huge problem that BeReal has to face is being copied by other bigger apps. With TikTok Now already implemented, it will be only harder for BeReal to gain a new audience. It will also be harder to introduce subscriptions because the competition does it for free. 

Furthermore, as of now, BeReal is not making any money and the support of investors is crucial for its development. It is not an uncommon procedure; apps such as Facebook or Snapchat also first gained their user base and only later introduced advertising. It is very probable that in the future BeReal might need to add in-app ads or subscriptions to generate profit or even survive. I do not think that this will be a huge problem because users are used to seeing ads on a daily basis, so it probably would not bother most but it is still a thing to consider.

On the other hand, BeReal has a high chance of adding new, never-done-before features and updates, which will help the app stay relevant and generate more users on a daily basis. In my opinion, the fact that BeReal employees are younger will also influence the performance of the app as they are aware of what is considered trendy and ‘in’ at the moment, amongst the younger generation.
