World’s first intelligent aquarium

Reading Time: 4 minutes

We all love to observe and learn new about different things and organisms that inhabit our planet. We do this in a variety of ways, and if we talk about the study of marine organisms, one of the ways is to visit the oceanarium. Usually, near the aquarium there are signs on which basic information about the fish living in this aquarium is written. In a public aquarium full of marine life, it is often difficult to distinguish which species are represented in it. Especially often there is a situation when a child asks his parents about some fish, but they cannot clearly tell and explain all the information to the child. It happens that adults themselves are simply too lazy to read the entire flow of information. Developed by specialists from the Research Institute of Technology in Taiwan AI Aquarium helps to solve all these problems. Artificial intelligence thanks to the tracking of the eyes of observers, the position of fish in the tank and the algorithm for recognizing objects gives out the necessary information and makes the process of observing marine life not only spectacular, but also informative.

The new AI Aquarium is an almost ordinary aquarium with an interactive transparent screen on the outer edge and two cameras. 3D camera aimed at the audience, tracks the movement of the observer’s eyes and determines with high accuracy where his gaze is directed. The second camera is directed inside the tank and covers all its inhabitants. It allows to recognize the location of each fish at any given time. This is possible because of an algorithm that recognizes the object and analyzes the video information from the camera in real time. Next, the algorithm compares the appearance of the animals with their pictures from the database. By comparing the direction of the user’s gaze and the location of the fish, AI Aquarium determines which one a person is looking at. In addition, the system identifies which species the animal belongs to and displays the relevant information on a transparent interactive microLED display. There is also a function to reproduce information in audio format.  According to the Research Institute, the accuracy of the system for recognizing the species and location of fish is very high and is 98%.

The designation of the species of fish appears on the screen in the form of a signature, which is placed directly below the animal in the field of view of a person. If viewers want to know more detailed information about the fish, they can request it with simple hand gestures. The system attributes to each species different gestures that can be seen at the bottom of the screen. At the moment, the first AI Aquarium is available at the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology in Taiwan. At CES 2023, the Industrial Technology Research Institute was awarded the title of one of the leading innovators of the year. AI Aquarium was noted as one of the most striking and creative achievements in the category of “virtual reality”.

I believe that such an AI Aquarium is a step towards a new perception of the tourist business and services. Perhaps in the near future, with the help of artificial intelligence, this area, like many others, will face global changes and access to a new level in the provision of services. I am sure that such an aquarium will become a trend of the present time, as it displays the effect of immersion and the possibility of new interaction between people and exhibits.

In my opinion, artificial intelligence and all the innovations possible thanks to it exist precisely in order to make human life better, to develop us, to open new horizons for us and to expand our boundaries of perception of the world. Artificial intelligence should serve a person. And that’s what this invention is. This aquarium helps to increase the public’s interest in studying the animal world, including the marine.

I’m strongly convinced that the technologies that have been used in the new smart aquarium in the future can be used in other important areas of life, for example, in the field of education or medicine.

In conclusion, it is worth noting that artificial intelligence is currently penetrating absolutely into all spheres of human life. On the example of such an AI Aquarium, you can see that even the most ordinary things can be considered from a different angle and can become an innovation and something non-standard. The main thing is the ability to see the possibility and prospect of combining simple things and artificial intelligence.

Will AI replace artists, writers and musicians?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

In 2022, much attention has been focused on neural networks. While some people see benefits and advantages in such technology, others are wary of, and sometimes hostile to neural networks. At their core, neural networks are machine learning algorithms that “simulate” the workings of the human brain. Thus, in the past year, neural networks have been able to write sentences and music, generate images, and even diagnose diseases. But will algorithms ever be able to replace human occupations such as writers, musicians, artists, and designers?

Neural networks have significant drawbacks. Throughout history, people have used emotions as a survival mechanism. For example, fear helps protect themselves from threat. A person can recognize the emotions of others by body movements, tone of voice, situation, social signals. Communicating with others and mastering cultural norms, we learned to understand emotions. Unlike us humans, artificial intelligence cannot feel, and it has not lived for many years among people. It  is very difficult for it to understand emotional subtleties.  It doesn’t create original content.  But in order for the neural network to produce text, pictures or music, it is required to download huge amounts of data with information from different sources.  I am sure that a person has much more advantages, because we have been processing information for decades.  Where there are mathematical rules, one can get around (chess, for example), but in creative matters, neural networks lack abstract thinking and can be useful to people as assistants for your creativity and generators of new ideas.

Now, let’s talk about the advantages of neural networks.  The neural network is well able to personalize content, work with many variables at once and create variations. Also, they perfectly process hundreds of data elements at the same time, which entails saving time.  Once the AI recognizes the pattern, it can instantly generate several variations.

In general, I can say that both a person and neural networks at the moment have something to learn from each other. But still, will artificial intelligence be able to replace creative professions?

First, it can affect those who call themselves artists and musicians, but who repeat the styles and creative approaches of others. Those who are accustomed to repeating the same tasks every day, writing the same sentences and replacing just a few words. All those who engage in plagiarism instead of creating something new will lose their jobs.

I am of the opinion that neural networks, at least for now, cannot come up with radically new ideas, but they can speed up the kind of work that is now routine. I think neural nets are a great tool, but being an artist or designer is not something that can be replaced by AI. There is one condition, and that is that it has to be someone who is studying alongside modern technology. It’s no secret that many people are now looking to neural networks for inspiration for their work. When designers are experiencing “burnout”, neural networks throw up new ideas for development. Simply send text to input your request. From my perspective, with all the opportunities that AI gives to a person, it should be perceived not as a threat, but as an opportunity. After all, while neural networks can give out ideas for inspiration, people can create something new, completely unique.  What’s more, people can concentrate on something more important and think how they can change the world to the better side with the help of neural nets. The condition of constant complaining, and fear is nowhere near development.

In conclusion, I would like to say that neural networks will not completely replace artists, designers, and musicians in the near future. Technology is evolving rapidly, but it is still limited in its ability to understand and replicate human creativity and emotion. Neural nets can help and improve performance, but they will never fully replace humans because they lack the unique human touch and perspective required for all manifestations of art.

Food of the Future: Agricultural waste is used for growing synthetic meat.

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Eating meat is a way of life for many people. Meat is considered essential source of protein and contains many other nutrients. But it is also known that the breeding of poultry and cattle is inefficient and requires a huge amount of resources.  Huge areas, water and fodder for livestock are given to pastures. In addition, cattle breeding harms the atmosphere. At the same time, the world’s population is growing relentlessly. Scientists estimate that by 2050 the world’s population will grow from the current 7.7 to 9.7 billion, and by the end of the century it will reach 11 billion people.  Naturally, the issue of feeding a growing population becomes more acute.

That is why marketologists and statisticians predict in the coming years the growth of the market for artificial meat from laboratory, which is gaining fame on the wave of interest in responsible consumption. Startups around the world are creating a new industry, promising salvation for the environment without compromises on taste, composition and quality.

I believe humanity is doomed to abandon natural meat and replacement of animal products is becoming a common practice in modern society. Meat substitutes are created using protein synthesis, which involves combining amino acids to form a new type of protein. Scientists have come a long way in creating realistic substitutes for vegetable and animal protein.  However, the future of meat synthesis is still unknown.

From my perspective, the best way to create realistic meat substitutes is biotechnology. Scientists are learning to synthesize different types of proteins from plants. But there is one problem: the production of a high-quality analogue of meat, which has the same taste and qualities, is now too expensive. But recently, a team of scientists from Singapore and China has made a breakthrough in this area. They have found a way to use food waste to grow meat, reducing production costs and helping to make cultured meat a potential food option for people in the future.

Muscle cells multiply easily and vigorously in nutrient media, but need a wireframe to give them a characteristic shape to become meat. Without it, the meat will most likely resemble a lump of mashed potatoes. Unique wireframes can be created using new 3D printing technology. However, it is difficult and expensive, as it requires the use of food and safe neutral substances. The use of collagen or gelatin destroys the idea of sprouts because they are extracted from the flesh of living organisms, and edible polymers are too expensive. Finding cost-effective edible ink for printing is one of the major challenges in the production of cultured meat.

In search of an alternative, scientists paid attention to agricultural waste in the form of barley and rye husks. Modern technologies make it possible to extract proteins, which, after processing, can be turned into the basis of “ink” for 3D printers and scaled to create the same framework for the growth of muscle tissue. This technology allows more efficient processing of products and significantly reduces the need for animal husbandry.

I believe that this method of printing using such ink has great potential for future meat synthesis. The husk that remains from the grains is not suitable for food and in fact it is thrown away. This is a cheap resource that can be used quite successfully. I believe that the ideal option in the future may be further development in this area, finding new sources that can serve as a framework for growing stem cells. This creates less harm to nature, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, since no animal dies for this food source, which is more ethical. In addition, this type of meat synthesis can help produce meat faster than traditional methods.

In conclusion, the idea of scientists pushed me to another idea: the way to our survival is the reuse and recycling of resources. In any field, whether it is the production of synthetic meat or any other. We are now at a stage of development where we can no longer be mere consumers and only take resources from nature, but must find and use other ways to meet our needs.

Tesco Tinder – new service for reducing food waste

Reading Time: 2 minutes

According to world studies, about 30% of food is lost and thrown into the garbage during the production of food and after its purchase.  The world throws away 1.3 billion tons of food every year, and if there were no losses and spoilage of food products, it could feed 1.26 billion hungry people every year. The problem also has indirect consequences associated with climate change and environmental pollution, since the production of discarded food consumes resources: water and land.

That is why the question arises, how to stop such an empty and senseless release of resources in food sector?

The answer is that it is necessary to increase the number of recyclable software and use modern recycling technologies.  In the last decade, the circular economy has begun to move forward as a more appropriate economic model for reducing emissions. It is followed by ways of reusing food suitable for human consumption, reusing food as animal feed, processing the material into high value-added products, processing nutrients and restoring energy.

Many companies are already implementing technologies to minimize food waste, become more sustainable.

For instance, supermarket chain Tesco introduced online platform Tesco Exchange, which is also often called Tesco Tinder. The app is designed to help suppliers share excess products in order to reduce waste and production costs. The exchange was developed by the consulting firm Anthesis.

With the help of this app suppliers can advertise products, submit requests, and set alerts when needed products become available. Interestingly, the fields of application extend not only to food, but also to packaging. I think this is a big step towards a circularity in food sector. Overproduction and inadequate disposal, which humanity faces everywhere, are global environmental problems.

Sarah Bradbury, Chief Quality Officer at Tesco, says, “Waste for one supplier can be a valuable commodity for another.”  This statement is extremely meaningful to me.  From my perspective, exactly this way, people can share with each other and receive mutual benefits.  I believe this is the approach that humanity really lacks at present.

To conclude, I believe that in conditions of present time, with all the pressing environmental and climate problems, the food sector is simply obliged to move towards a more circular economy.  On the example of Tesco chain of stores, we see how with the help of advanced technologies and software we are able to use the resources in a more sensible way.

The new Triton Hercules bathyscaphe

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The world of underwater exploration is expanding every day. Travel is more accessible today than ever, but if you’re talking about traditional trips, underwater adventures hold a special place.

If you are looking for an underwater adventure that will challenge traditional travel, pay attention to the new Triton Hercules bathyscaphe. In many science fiction films we meet submarines that look like glass capsules, and “Hercules” fits this description very well.

The new Hercules bathyscaphe will allow 6 people to take a ride. The design studio Dark Ocean and the famous yachtmaker Espen Oeino worked on the design of this device.

So why Hercules is so special? The basis of the bathyscaphe is an acrylic body made in the form of a flattened bubble, already familiar from other products of the brand. It is designed in such a way that passengers can see everything that is happening around them through transparent acrylic windows! Various interior options are available for the convenience of each owner. The owners have access to designer lounge chairs, a place for upholstered furniture and poufs, a mini-bar. And there are many other features: it can dive up to 10 hours to a depth of 200 meters, and its speed is 15 kilometers per hour thanks to an electric power plant compact enough to fit in one small space.

Of course, that’s an incredible device. Some types and natural phenomena cannot be qualitatively transmitted through a phone screen or a picture in a magazine. And this is exactly the case.

It is designed to be safe with minimal energy consumption, which means it can reach high speeds without consuming a lot of energy. From my point of view, this is quite important, because saving energy at the moment is an important task for all mankind.

But don’t forget! This is a luxurious entertainment. Only a certain group of people will be able to afford such an expensive attraction. If we are talking about an average person, now this is simply impossible. Unfortunately, we live in a world where money is crucial in many aspects. Triton is a commercial company, its main task is to make a profit. However, I think that such projects could be more accessible. It would be funny if children who are afraid to swim could see the aquatic flora and fauna. This incredibly broadens the horizons and limits of imagination.

Triton has changed everything we know about personal submarines — how they look and how they work. The world has never looked more beautiful than it does today, thanks to these incredible machines.

AI in medicine: the device with the help of the retina of the eye can predict the risk of heart disease

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Artificial intelligence has made our lives much easier since its inception. In the real world, everything is so connected with new technologies that it is simply impossible to imagine life without AI. And without any doubt, the contribution of technology to the field of medicine is the most important.

So, the issue of my talk, as it is easy to guess by the heading, is the contribution of AI to medicine.

A specially developed device in the future will be able to detect and predict the risks of heart disease. According to the British Journal of Ophthalmology,  it soon will be quite possible to produce special cardiovascular screenings. In just 1 minute patients will be able to learn about the risks of heart disease. There will be no need to conduct any additional blood tests and similar frauds. Everything will be reduced to the greatest efficiency and the minimum time. This is how artificial intelligence works!

Personally, I think it’s a very cool idea. Firstly, nowadays cardiovascular diseases are very common. This is a real problem not only for older people. In addition, that’s a common fact that after the Covid-19 many people began to have heart problems. It turns out that there have become more issues concerning health.

The task of scientists is to save human lives. In many cases, medical care for late detection of the disease is already ineffective. And nothing can be done! In addition, high-quality medical care is an expensive thing. As a result, poor people do not get the necessary medical examinations. A very good thing about this new tool is that the inventors talk about its cheapness. I believe that quality medicine should be available to all segments of society, regardless of wealth.

The tool studies the blood vessels that are located in the retina of the eye. The tool takes into account various changes, makes all kinds of measurements. It turns out that blood vessels in retina and heart are closely connected, which provides a special opportunity to determine the state of the heart and even predict all sorts of risks through the retina.

Of course, this is very convenient. Any analyses require time, specified conditions, reagents or equipment. It seems to me that using this software will require less resources and human’s participation.

After all, I think it’s a wonderful invention. So far, of course, this is just an idea, confirmed by several studies. It will be quite difficult to transfer the code to real medicine. But still, artificial intelligence plays for the benefit of humanity and this is wonderful.

Elon Mask presents robot ”Optimus”

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Now we live in a world where everything is changing very quickly. Relatively new ideas and fantasies are becoming reality, and more and more bold ideas are coming in their place.

The Tesla company has long been known to everyone. And every time the projects of its owner Elon Musk at first seem unreal, sometimes even absurd. But after their implementation, these things become legendary. Now the Tesla company is moving towards the production of robots. Therefore, as part of the Artificial intelligence Day, Elon presented a prototype of the Optimus robot to the society. 2 devices were presented. One can perform tasks, but is executed without any appearance, and the other is made as beautiful as possible, but cannot demonstrate anything.

It was interesting to watch the release of the first device. He went on stage, waved to the audience, danced. The producers also showed a video in which the robot waters flowers, lifts and carries boxes. The performance evokes very different emotions. You look, and it seems that progress has reached. Artificial intelligence – here it is standing in front of you and watering a flower. What’s in his head at all? He already knows how to think, make some decisions, or so far it’s just a toy on management ….

Elon Musk has always been famous for his unconventional views and ideas. As far as I know, he wants to launch mass production of robots. Millions of robots will become available to the public. Just think, millions of people can have a home robot. For me personally, it sounds both scary and amazing at the same time…. Yes, we all understand that the world does not stand still and more and more new technologies are being introduced into our lives every day, but is humanity ready for this? After all, a robot that can dance and water flowers is only the first step in this project.

Of course, the creation of a robot with real intelligence, a robot capable of independence from a person is still far from reality. But I think this is a reason to think about whether such machines are needed at all. What if we think about the world and being in which what is created by man does not obey man? Perhaps, positive thoughts from such thoughts do not come to mind.

On the other hand, whether people have been waiting for this for so long. Artificial intelligence should simplify our lives. Robotic machines are already available at almost every factory. And comparing past and present working conditions, you realize that living conditions have become much better.

Anyway, it’s too early to make any statements. Therefore, we will closely monitor the new releases of Tesla and monitor developments in the field of robotics.
