Is our data still safe? The largest medical data leak in Poland

About the leak

ALAB Laboratoria is one of the largest nationwide networks of laboratory facilities in Poland. Its status meant that their databases fell victim to an organized hacker attack, which ended in success for the hacker side. The attackers demanded a ransom for not disclosing the data of sensitive patients data or even employees data. Leaked patient data includes: PESEL number, name and surname, residential address and test results assigned to them.

What data was uploaded?

On the dark web, the data was shared by a person known in hacker circles. 1,228 folders marked with parts of PESEL numbers were uploaded. From official information, we know that a total of 44.5 gigabytes of data and results were stolen from the company, including 187,000 PESEL numbers and 190 GB of company data. Many of them are already fully available to dark web users.

Was there any other solution?

From what we learn from the company’s employees, they have no intention of paying the ransom demanded by the hackers. As informed by Dr. Seweryn Dmowski, communications advisor to the ALAB management board, “this event is primarily a consequence of the company’s firm attitude, which does not negotiate with cybercriminals and does not intend to meet their ransom demands.”. It is worth asking yourself whether this is really a good approach. In my opinion, as companies increasingly adopt the strategy of “no negotiations with terrorists”, we will see fewer and fewer of them. What purpose will cybercriminals have if they cannot make money from their “work”. However, it is worth remembering that the company has lost the trust of its customers by not purchasing its data. In such situations, there is often no perfect solution.

What now?

Many people wonder if their data has been leaked and, if so, what to do with it. For this purpose, a special government website was created: bezpieczdane.gov.pl, where we can read about how exactly they check if your data was uploaded: “We check it by the anonymized PESEL number of the logged in user, so we can only check whether the PESEL number was included in the leak. We do not store data made public by criminals. Please note that they have indicated that they will release the data gradually, so check your data again later.”. Fortunately, I have already checked and I am lucky that my data has not been made public. However, I encourage each of us to check whether our data has not been leaked, and if so, read on the same website what we can do now.

Can Google’s Gemini beat the position of ChatGPT?

This question arises as Gemini is a new and promising language model developed by Google. While ChatGPT has gained popularity and recognition, Gemini’s entry into the field may pose a potential challenge. It will be interesting to see how these two models compete and evolve in the future. Taking into account the data provided by Google on their blog, we know that Gemini Ultra beats GPT-4. Benchmark data is on Google’s side and indicates the performance of their product.

Mind-Blowing Features!

Google released a video presenting another interesting feature of its product, which is beyond my understanding at the moment. Gemini will be able to play games with you when he sees your camera. Google showed us 2 examples. Gemini, seeing a map of the world on the camera, asked riddles with descriptions of different countries. The person had to point with his finger where it was. But don’t click on the screen! Fingers on the camera. It’s not everything. When Gemini was provided with a camera image showing 3 cups, the model decided to play the world-famous game with 3 cups and a ball. I still don’t believe that such things are possible.

Even though I have described many functions and statistics in which Gemini crushes its rival, this list is not the end. As it turned out, this model can do even more. On the website we can see how Gemini, seeing a photo of two yarns and asked what can be made with it, Gemini is able to generate photos of potential products to sew from the yarn. Another example is an animation of birds flying. Gemini provided the exact code to program such animations. For me, this model is an entry to a higher level. It cannot only transform text. According to Google, it will be able to transform text, sound, recordings and even photos, all in real time!!!!

To sum up, in my opinion, if Google is able to deliver the product as they currently describe it, we will see a change in the leadership in terms of the “best” AI model. I’m really positive and I hope that they will release Gemini without any unnecessary delays or errors.

Why simply Apple’s Vision Pro doesn’t make sense?

The latest novelty on the international market is the VR headset from Meta. The third version of the product, called Meta Quest 3, has gone on sale. The price is very controversial – $549.99, which is much lower than the future competition from Apple. Their Apple Vision Pro product will cost $3,499.99, which is an astronomical amount.

A question comes to mind – why will consumers pay more for product from Zuckerberg’s company? The question is very difficult to answer because we still don’t know exactly what the Apple headset will contain.

What we’ve seen in the presentations?

On June 5, during Apple’s annual presentation, we were presented with a “revolutionary” VR experience that is expected to conquer the current market. Expectations are high, but let’s think about what new things they can introduce. The quality of workmanship will definitely be on the side of the Apple product and this cannot be denied. The introduction of mixed reality technology was strongly emphasized, but Meta overtook Apple and introduced this solution in Quest 3. It is also worth emphasizing that the Apple product will certainly be used primarily for work, where the competition focuses mainly on gaming solutions.

The display quality is definitely on the side of the Vision Pro, which uses Micro OLED screens while the Quest 3 uses regular LCD displays. Funnily enough, the Meta product lasts about 2.2 hours on a single charge, while the Vision Pro only lasts 2 hours. A slight difference, but in my opinion this is not what is expected from a product at the price of an Audi A3 from 2006.

The aspect that is Apple’s advantage is the operating system. Their product will include a kind of iOS, which is known for its great solutions. These systems connect and create a convenient network of consumer devices very well. Meta Quest 3 is based on modified Android software which does not have such convenient functions, but from my own experience with this device I have no complaints about the smoothness or transparency of the software itself.

Will it be a huge success?

In my opinion, no. Currently, we have a company on the market that has already outdone one of their former competitors – HTC. The only reason Apple Vision Pro can bring any financial success is high sales among the company’s rabid fans. Despite the high prices of other Apple products, people obsessed with this company buy tech only because of the bitten apple on the back of their smartphones.

However, we need to ask ourself a decisive question. Is this enough to enter and be one of Apple’s flagship products? We will know the answer to this question only after we get to know the brand’s financial reports.

The Tennis revolution – Hawkeye Live Technology

History

If you have watched a tennis match in the last few years, you may have noticed the absence of one thing that was characteristic of this sport – line umpires. They largely decided the fate of the match by assessing whether a given ball was in or out of the court. Every person makes mistakes, so they were not exceptions either. That is why for several years we have been able to observe the voices calling “out” through loudspeakers that are called by a computer. This is possible thanks to the Hawk-eye Live system.

The basic Hawk-eye system, however, has been present for a long time and is used for challenges – verifying whether the linesman judged the ball correctly or whether he was wrong. The new version of this system was implemented in 2020 during the Grand Slam tournament – US Open. Hawk-eye Live, as this system is called, replaced line judges and detected in real time whether the ball was in or out of the court.

Still some tournament denied using Hawk-eye system during their events. During French Open also called Roland Garros we wont encounter the use of such a system. The officials of the event claimed that there is no point on using Hawk-eye when on a clay court a ball leaves a visible mark where it landed. It makes sense considering that the cost of installing the Hawk-eye system on one court is around $100,000.

How it works?

The Hawk-eye Live system is based on 10 to 18 cameras placed around the entire court, depending on the tournament. These cameras track the ball from several angles. Thanks to this, this system has an error range of up to 5 mm. This is such a small amount that no referee can judge better the accuracy of the ball than the system. The image from the cameras is converted into a 3D animation showing the place where the ball hit during the point. 

Interestingly, these cameras are able to capture foot fault, which is when a player cross or step on the end line during the serve. It’s impressive because each player wears different shoes, of a different size, color or event type. So it is more difficult to track whether the athlete’s foot stepped on the line or not.

Did it improve tennis?

In my opinion, yes. This system means that during matches we can observe fewer situations where a player argues with a referee, which is spoiling the beauty of the game. Every sport evolves and changes to some extent. I think that is a step forward improving the game. Most of the top tennis players thinks mostly the same way. Here are some examples:
Novak Djokovic said: “The technology is so advanced right now, there is absolutely no reason why you should keep line umpires on the court. That’s my opinion”,
John McEnroe said: “I think that tennis is one of the few sports where you don’t need umpires or linesmen. If you have this equipment, and it’s accurate, isn’t it nice to know that the correct call’s being made?”

There are some legend players that have a bit different opinion on that topic:
Rafael Nadal said: “I don’t want to create controversy, but I think the traditional court with line judges looks much nicer”

Is Hawk-eye only present in tennis?

Of course not. Hawk-eye is present in many other sports such as volleyball, football and even basketball. The system is an increasingly common solution used at large tournaments, replacing old and outdated systems. We could see this solution, among others, during many NBA games and Premier League matches.

As a volleyball fan, I hope that in Plusliga we will replace verification from ordinary recordings with much more advanced systems that will automatically verify things that do not require a human to verify.
