Stylometry and Artificial Intelligence: A Revolution in Authorship Analysis and the Battle Against Plagiarism

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The combination of stylometry with artificial intelligence has significantly transformed the methods of authorship analysis and plagiarism combat, opening new possibilities in various fields – from literature to cybersecurity and copyright protection. The application of machine learning to analyze the literary works of William Shakespeare has shed new light on the history of literature, suggesting co-authorship in some of his works. This revolutionary change in the perception of authorship uses advanced algorithms to understand complex literary patterns, emphasizing the significant contribution of AI to literary research.

In the field of translations, stylometric analysis reveals individual differences in translators’ styles, proving that each translator brings their unique characteristics to the text translation. These discoveries, made possible by the application of artificial intelligence, offer a new perspective on linguistic subtleties and their impact on translation. In the context of combating plagiarism, stylometry supported by AI has become a key tool. The Polish Unified Anti-Plagiarism System, introduced in 2019, uses advanced algorithms to analyze texts for similarities and sentence structure uniqueness. This system not only detects plagiarism but also helps maintain academic integrity. As a result, every thesis in Poland is now checked for originality, in response to the amendment to the higher education law.

Additionally, AI-enhanced stylometry is applied in detecting and countering disinformation and propaganda in social media. Algorithms can identify bots and fake accounts based on unique writing style patterns, which is crucial in the face of the growing influence of social media on public opinion shaping. Such technologies play an increasing role in protecting against the spread of false information.

In education, AI stylometry is used to identify the authorship of student works, which is important in the context of combating dishonest academic practices. These algorithms can detect not only plagiarism but also analyze the writing style to determine if the work was written by the student who claims it.

In a broader context, the application of stylometry in combination with artificial intelligence aids in demystifying and establishing the identities of anonymous or pseudonymous authors. These tools are also used to protect the intellectual legacy of creators from theft and unauthorized use of their works. As a result, the combination of these two fields not only provides us with better tools to understand the literary past but also to protect copyright and maintain integrity in the digital world.”

AI’s disruption to the film industry

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Last year everybody heard about the huge strikes in Hollywood and beyond that were connected with AI, but what was it all about?

SAG AFRA is a US TV & Film Labor Union that protects the rights of those creatives working in the film industry. SAG AFRA represents 160,000 workers including many famous names. SAG AFRA staged a historical four month strike shutting down big corps like Disney, Netflix & Amazon in order to ensure workers had better pay and working conditions, however it also concerned AI. The Union sought to ensure workers rights were protected before we enter into a new age of filmmaking. The exponential development of AI is a threat to many creatives working in the film industry. No less will it be able to recreate actors’ likeness but also it will be able to edit films, write scripts & compose music. The automation of creative roles could lead to a reduction in many job opportunities. Furthermore, it will not just affect creatives but the industry as a whole. Cinema’s are at threat as AI reshapes how films are consumed (a shift to in-home viewing), there will arise issues with deep fakes, intellectual property rights and AI based audience targeting and privacy disputes.

On the other hand, the AI revolution will bring about many positive changes to filmmaking.

The cost of producing a film will be significantly lower and it’ll speed up the process. It is, though, important to remember that behind every good movie there is a team of people who must be competent and creative. Producing a larger number of movies may lead to a significant drop in production quality and diminish the value of the art. However, by using artificial intelligence to reduce costs, artistic films with smaller budgets will have the opportunity to be made and it may help them achieve a better quality. It will also make filmmaking more accessible to everyone.

A very good current example of this is Largo AI. This tool analyzes previous films in terms of the people who created a given work. Thanks to this, a director can find an actor who meets their requirements and fits within their budget without going through the current lengthy and costly process. Many young creators have the chance to develop their careers and talent and can be discovered with minimal effort and cost. Additionally, with the help of this tool, financing can be obtained and a simpler distribution network can be built.

Film distribution has become easier through artificial intelligence tools. Based on our previous searches on streaming platforms, artificial intelligence finds patterns and suggests materials that are tailored to a particular user. As a result, movies and series that do not have highly developed marketing campaigns can reach larger audiences, especially those who are interested in them. A good example is Spanish cinema, which entered the mainstream through the series “Money Heist” (“La Casa de Papel”).

The main concern for now though is people’s place in the film industry. SAG AFRA’s strike was relatively successful and it afforded much more protection and better rights for all workers in the film industry. However, time will tell as to how effective these terms will be, one example where gray areas remain are actors replications – SAG AFRA initially set out to be able to veto AI replicating actors, however they settled for notice and consent requirements which may lead to big corps being able to bully their way to getting what they want in future.

AI can bring us a lot of revolutionary changes and improvements in all fields of our lives but we should be aware of dangers and regulate it as soon as possible. Job markets need to develop new skills and adapt to new realities. Various tools can effectively increase our productivity, but we also cannot allow them to take away our creativity. Therefore, appropriate legal regulations are still needed to ensure that in the development of artificial intelligence, we do not lose the human element.

Mitigating the Risks of Artificial Intelligence in the Creation of Misleading and Harmful Content

Reading Time: 3 minutes

With the development of artificial intelligence, tools have emerged that are dangerous for everyone by spreading misinformation and false materials. They can destroy our reputation and the mental health of many people. Therefore, we should be aware of them and know how to fight them. Despite the many positive aspects that artificial intelligence brings, today I will describe one aspect from the negative side and how we can avoid it.

A huge threat of artificial intelligence is the creation of pornographic materials. Although such applications themselves are not illegal, it depends on how they are used. In Poland, it is a crime to violate personal rights, i.e., when a user uses the generated materials without the consent and agreement of the person depicted in these materials. The problem is very serious and affects both adults and minors.

Generating fictional photos or videos is not a challenge today. Anyone with internet access can use such a service, which on most platforms is free and is done within seconds. This creates a particular danger for minors. There have already been cases in Spanish schools where classmates shared photos of their classmates through social media. It is important to remember the serious psychological consequences this can have for the victim, as well as legal consequences. The creation of pedophilic content has never been as easy as it is today. Such crimes should be quickly detected and severely punished. Especially at this age, the psychological damage can be very dangerous and leave a mark for life.

Although for adults, such crimes can also be very dangerous. One example is blackmail. My acquaintance met someone through an online platform, with whom he maintained internet contact, and until the moment he was to send his photo to show what he looks like, everything looked like the beginning of an acquaintance between two people. Unfortunately, as soon as he sent his normal photos, the other person turned out to be a fraudster who altered his photos into pornographic ones and demanded money with the threat of sharing these photos with his acquaintances. The problem was that he had colleagues among his acquaintances, and such false accusations could have destroyed his professional reputation. Unfortunately, many people are not aware of such tools, and his explanations would not be credible, and he was aware of this, so he sent money to the scammer, who did not stop at one attempt to extort money. Until he blocked this person, he made several transfers and still lived in fear that his reputation would be destroyed. In his case, he only lost money and it did not end with worse consequences. Law enforcement could not help him either, as they could not find the perpetrator of the crime.

When it comes to public figures or those performing important functions in our society, the consequences of such actions can be immense.

There have already been cases where porn stars have been generated by artificial intelligence, and such materials have been sold on various platforms such as Reddit. Due to such actions, verification with an ID card was introduced, but the question is that with the development of technology, it will be possible to cheat verification methods as we have in the banking sector. In this case, it was a character generated by artificial intelligence, but we must also remember about stalkers who could use publicly available photos of people and reap benefits without the knowledge of these people. Verification safeguards are an obstacle for such people, but we must also remember that it is not a barrier that cannot be broken.

In my opinion, the operation of such applications should not be allowed, but we must also remember about the constitutional rights of human freedom. The fight against such tools is and will be very difficult, which is why we should already develop laws and methods to fight this. Certainly, educating people will help increase awareness of this issue and make people realize that not everything seen on the internet can be believed. On the other hand, all materials generated by artificial intelligence have common features, so other artificial intelligence tools can be used to verify the authenticity of shared materials. Additionally, the European Commission should implement regulations ensuring user safety by monitoring such sites, where mandatory verification and the possibility of editing only their own photos are required.

Unfortunately, there are no perfect things and thanks to the development of artificial intelligence, which has many positive sides, we must also be aware of these negative aspects, but if we prepare in advance, we can mitigate the negatives.

Grading system and AI-how to deal with this connection?

Reading Time: 4 minutes

In every school, there has always been some form of grading. Grades are not always expressed in numbers, but they’re present in one form or another. Assessing a student’s performance is important for both students and teachers. For students, it provides insight into their progress, and for teachers, it serves as feedback on the effectiveness of their teaching. In addition to grades that describe and assess progress and behavior, there are also commendations and reprimands serving similar functions. However, thanks to the development of AI, new problems have been created, especially for teachers. Especially that students can use AI tools and do their homework without any work or preparation. This issue is getting more problematic and we should address this problem in its early stage.

Grading, however, is fraught with challenges. What does each grade represent? Are grades fair? Can grades be compared across different schools? Do they positively or negatively impact student motivation? When a student receives a good grade, it serves as positive reinforcement, acknowledging their hard work and dedication. However, a positive grade can also be misleading if a teacher grades too leniently or strictly. Conversely, if a student receives a negative grade perceived as unfair, it can lead to a lack of motivation to learn. Yet, if a student receives a negative grade and recognizes a need for improvement, it can be a catalyst for increased effort. Moreover, though, it doesn’t make any sense to grade a work that isn’t made by students. It isn’t fair to compare work that is made by AI with work that is made by humans. Students that do their tasks alone put much more effort into them, but the end result is the most important for tutors. After all, students have to prepare themselves for future work, where individual productivity plays an important role.

Grades are often abstract, providing only rough guidance on areas for improvement. A comprehensive verbal or written explanation accompanying the grade is essential. Students need to know precisely where their strengths and weaknesses lie. On the downside, grading within a group can escalate pressure and foster competition among students. Constant comparison can lead to physical and emotional strain, causing a student to despise school. When something is made by AI, it’s impossible to understand the level and the development of students, also students don’t ascertain the intended knowledge and skills which are the aims of education.

Students should be assessed based on their individual progress. Gifted students may achieve good results effortlessly, garnering attention from teachers who may be more lenient even in the face of poorer performance. On the other hand, less gifted individuals who make significant progress through hard work may not receive the recognition they deserve, impacting their motivation negatively.

It is crucial to acknowledge that students develop at different rates. Demotivating them with grades may lead to a moment of psychological distress, causing them to stop learning out of defiance. A positive reinforcement can foster a cooperative atmosphere within the group, where students help each other. However, some classes suffer from a relentless competitive environment, where grades and reprimands serve to degrade others.

Just as in life, everything has positives and negatives. Grades and other reinforcements can have a positive impact on students, but they can also lead to failure or foster the wrong motivation. With the introduction of AI, student motivation, an age-old issue, is now a hot topic and maybe thanks to this technology, we have been forced to and should think about new methods to increase students’ motivation.

Unfortunately AI tools like Chatgpt can lead to cheating. With no reliable tools for checking if the work wasn’t written by AI, teachers should rethink the structure of their courses. Some solutions could involve written tasks on paper during classes or making presentations, when the ability of a student’s present knowledge would be very important. Moreover, students should be taught how to work with AI tools effectively. Students should be graded on their use of modern problem solving tools and methods. And perhaps special attention should be given to hand-written tasks where students can express their individual thoughts. The roles of teachers are getting more important due to these issues, teachers’ responsibility for students’ education is greater now, this job currently can’t be replaced and I don’t think it will happen in the near future.

To conclude, though AI tools present new challenges, especially in the realm of academic integrity, it has also fast tracked our need to address the question of student motivation, as our traditional grading system, though important in gauging students’ development, is perhaps not ideal. It will give rise to innovative approaches to teaching and assessment.

On the other hand, we need solutions to stop AI based cheating, one could involve incorporating more regular in-class assessments, such as written tasks or presentations, where students’ immediate understanding and application of knowledge become crucial. It would also provide a good assessment of their development over time. These methods would encourage individual learning and give more accurate readings of a students ability, perhaps improving the grading system, which is too reliant on high pressure test environments and computer based courseworks (which are far too open for AI influence).

Moreover, it’s essential to integrate education about AI tools into the curriculum. Giving students knowledge of how to responsibly use and navigate AI can empower them, improve our overall use of the tool itself and reduce the temptation to use AI for academic dishonesty.

The traditional grading system needs to evolve to incorporate modern tools and methods. This might involve a more holistic evaluation that is less focused on tests and essays but more on the  process, effort, and critical thinking demonstrated by the students over time. This approach emphasizes the importance of genuine effort and understanding and will mitigate the risk of unfair comparisons between work produced by AI and that done by individuals.

Educators and institutions should stay proactive in addressing the potential negative impacts of AI on education. Through creating environments that encourage collaboration, critical thinking, and responsible use of technology, we can navigate the challenges posed by AI tools, harness this tool in a positive way for students and ensure that education remains an empowering and genuine experience for all students.

Technology has a huge impact on our lives and we have to learn how to deal with it. There are many threats, but in my opinion there are more advantages. In order to avoid these threats we should rethink our current system and conform with technology. The use of tech increases our productivity allowing us to stay focused on tasks that can’t be made by computers or algorithms.

The New Economy of the Darknet and how we can regulate it?

Reading Time: 4 minutes

With the rise of cryptocurrency and particularly coins like Monero, the Darkweb is increasingly becoming a place where criminal activity thrives. What steps are being and can be taken to regulate it and will they be effective?

What is the Darknet?

The Darknet is a hidden part of the internet, with one needing specialized software to access it. It can be used as a marketplace for illegal goods and services, such as drugs, weapons and hacking services. The development of cryptocurrencies have galvanized the use of the Darknet and created a hidden economy.

One can access the network using the Tor protocol, which hides users’ IP addresses. This means that network traffic on the Darknet is encrypted and cannot be easily traced. To access the Darknet, a user must first install Tor and configure it to connect to the network.

On the Darknet you can also find many valuable resources and it’s being used in countries where free speech is in danger or where there is none. Journalists are given the possibility to express their opinion about current situations and crises in the world freely. The Darknet plays such an important role when it comes to liberal principles, because it can’t be regulated and governments or big companies can’t limit our free speech.

Why are cryptocurrencies so important to the Darknet’s Economy?

It’s very difficult to use normal bank transfers for illegal transactions, because there are many laws and restrictions that prevent it. Nearly every country has laws and rules that prohibit illegal transactions. Furthermore, transactions aren’t anonymous so authorities can easily track down criminals. This is why blockchain technology is a very popular route for those who wish to remain unknown. It’s decentralized so nobody can block the transaction and if the authority tracking you doesn’t know your private key, they won’t have access to, or control over your money. You can also remain anonymous. Cryptocurrencies are the answer to all these problems.

We’ve all probably heard of Bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency, but when it comes to illegal transactions Monero seems to be most popular, because of its technology and encryption method. These are the advantages of Monero:

  • Ring Signatures: it’s virtually impossible to identify the source of funds as the sender’s identity during the transaction is mixed with a group of others.
  • Stealth Addresses: these create a unique one-time address for each transaction, further hiding the recipients identity.
  • Fungibility: this prevents blacklisting of specific coins that have fungibility with Monero and that have been used for illicit activities.

Thanks to Bitcoin’s blockchain technology, it’s very easy for everyone to track every transaction and also the amount of money that each wallet contains. Blockchain technology is very useful, yet its transparency can lead to many problems. If someone knows the exact amount of money you have, they may try to steal it from you in real life. The upside of Monero is that it can provide safety for crypto users, especially important if you consider Monero is used for many legal transactions. Thanks to Monero you can hide your transaction history so people can’t see how much money you have. Those aware of the dangers of blockchain already use it for this purpose.

How does the economy on the Darknet work?

The economy on the darknet is overwhelmingly based on cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin and Monero. Cryptocurrencies offer several key benefits to Darknet participants:

  • Privacy: encrypted transactions cannot easily be linked to specific individuals.
  • Transnationality: worldwide transfers without government interference.
  • Ease of use: access to crypto and transaction process is user friendly.

This is why crypto is the preferred medium on the Darknet. In 2022, the value of crypto transactions on the darknet was estimated to be over $20 billion.

Business models on the Darknet

A variety of business models operate on the Darknet. The sale of illegal goods and services rank as the most popular. In addition, the Darknet is also used to launder money from illegal activities. Cryptocurrencies are then easily exchanged for fiat, such as US dollars, without criminals needing to reveal their identity.

How to fight crime on the Darknet?

There are no excellent solutions for this problem, but we can make life for criminals more difficult. We can ban some private coins like Monero or Zcash. In fact, it has already been done in Dubai and in Japan, and it’s interesting to note that Dubai seems to be the most crypto friendly environment in the world. There are already some restrictions in place that were made by Binance in European countries like Poland and Italy, the biggest exchange in the world delisted private coins from the exchange. Moreover, we should make withdrawing crypto harder worldwide, the UK has already banned Bitcoin ATMs. Currently, it’s very easy to withdraw up to 1000 Euro without any verification. In my opinion, we should have such ATMs but you should have to verify yourself during each transaction no matter the amount. Some restrictions are already in place in some countries where Monero wallets do require verification. Your wallet address is connected with your ID, so there is no longer anonymity. Furthermore, the US government has a reward on offer for people who can hack the Monero blockchain, the idea may seem great but right now it seems to be impossible, because of Monero’s complex encryption. Perhaps the possession of private coins should become illegal, it would make the market smaller, but because it’s decentralized, it’s impossible to delete the blockchains that already exist from the network. There’s also no ruling out that criminal syndicates would move fast to find an alternative solution if these rules were put in place. The informal nature of organized crime would keep them steps ahead of the labored updates to government legislation.

Conclusion:

The illegal market on the Darknet is expanding and everyone can access it. I think this problem will only get bigger and much more difficult to solve. That’s why we urgently need to think about how to make the Darknet more difficult to use and limit its accessibility. Cryptocurrencies are a really great and useful technology and financially innovative, but we need to impose some restrictions now to reduce crime and its exponential growth.
