Is Chat GPT going to replace Google Search?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Chat GPT, which stands for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, was founded by OpenAI and introduced to public usage on 30th of November 2022. Chat after asking him a question, what is he, described “himself” as “I am trained on a massive amount of text data and can generate human-like text on a wide range of topics.” It can be used for many various purposes and can provide easy-to-understand definitions and solutions for given questions. The chatbot works in a similar, but not identical way compared to Google Search, which is, according to the first website definition provided by it, “a fully-automated search engine that uses software known as web crawlers that explore the web regularly to find pages to add to our index.” In the text below, the main differences and advantages, and limitations of both platforms are presented.

OpenAI And ChatGTP
https://www.forbes.com/sites/ariannajohnson/2022/12/07/heres-what-to-know-about-openais-chatgpt-what-its-disrupting-and-how-to-use-it/?sh=24a867a02643

Chat GPT takes the form of some kind of a dialogue between the user and the chatbot, which is intended to be similar to human–human interaction, and the user receives an answer in one text. Where Google search takes the original way of providing information and compares great number of websites and displays the most suitable and accurate answers, but the user can look through all provided websites to find the best answer for his search.

The main advantage of Chat GPT over Google Search is, as written above, humanlike response, where the user is able to ask a very precise or broad question and the chatbot will answer them with a chosen form of text and making it easy to understand for regular people. Thus, it makes it even available for kids to some extent. Another advantage is that Chat GPT can perform some human work such as writing art, creating a plan, summarizing a text, writing a code etc. Whereas Google Search does not offer such services. Some may say that Google can provide websites to perform such actions, but will take additional time and labour from humans, whereas Chat GPT can perform all those actions on one website.

The limitation of the OpenAI product is that it does not have access to current data and as a result of that is not able to provide fully up-to-date answers. In comparison to Google, which can present current data such as news that even can be published 1 minute before searching, Chat GPT cannot be used for news or latest events research purposes.

gettyimages-1237940009.jpg
https://www.zdnet.com/home-and-office/work-life/how-to-use-google-search-more-effectively-to-get-the-results-you-need/

Some say that the chatbot is a real danger to the education and creativity of users, which can result in a lack of imagination or creative thinking. It can be extremely dangerous for students, especially younger ones, which should be supervised by a parent, teacher, or another adult, to prevent a lack of creativity.

To sum up, Chat GPT and Google Search are designed to serve the same goal, to provide the user with information from a large database, internet. Personally, I find Chat GPT more innovative and easier to understand of the issue or answer. However, Google is still my number 1 choice when it comes to fast research or looking for specific information. I do not think that Chat GPT will replace traditional Google Search in near future, but when OpenAI will improve its product and add some significant changes it could be a real competitor for Google.

Universities and AI or how the educational system is going to adapt to new technologies?

Reading Time: 2 minutes
Use this cutting-edge AI text generator to write stories, poems, news articles, and more - The Verge

In the previous articles a lot of important topics were brought up, particularly about AI and how we have to change legislations or how corporations have to change their structures to be able to co-exist with new technologies.

However, one vital thing has not been discussed yet – educational system. Not that long time ago in schools in the New York city, the use of the bots that could generate essays, articles etc., was banned. Should the same be implemented in the other educational places, especially at the universities?

On one hand, such bots as ChatGPT are the source of unlimited, quickly produced essays that can be used and presented as personal work. What is more, it is highly difficult to detect plagiarism in such bots, as the AI inside them can be aimed to rewrite the texts available on the Internet with using as much synonyms as possible. This is one of the concerns of professors at the universities in the US.

Nonetheless, on the other hand, those texts can be produced with a low quality, for instance mistakes, or sentence structures that barely make sense. This is an asset, as some students can use bots as a source for their research, that would take much less time, or, simply speaking, as an inspiration. For instance, extremely famous program ‘Grammarly’, that helps you to correct the mistakes or try to simplify or make your writing more academic, is also a bot, should it also be banned?

We cannot fully ban something, especially when it comes to the new technologies as they spread and become a part of our life’s. An interesting point was brought up on the Internet that we should develop a broader policy when it comes to the use of AI for educational purposes. Which would make a lot of sense, as far as this is approved by the professor, students can use different bots to enhance their papers.

At the same time, we come to the other problem, we need better tools to detect plagiarism or, what is more important, to detect texts/papers that have been fully made by the AI. This is a one more challenge for the IT industry, as, nowadays it is impossible to identify bot-written assignments, sure, if they have been done in a good way.

How do coworking spaces work?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Coworking spaces have become a popular alternative to traditional office spaces for freelancers, entrepreneurs, small businesses, and remote workers. The concept of coworking was first introduced in 2005 and has since then become a rapidly growing trend globally. Coworking spaces provide a flexible and shared working environment that offers a sense of community and collaboration, as well as access to high-speed internet, conference rooms, and other amenities. The business model of a coworking space is based on offering flexible memberships, high-quality amenities, and a community-focused environment. In this essay, I will explain the key elements of a successful coworking space business model.

How WeWork coworking space survived the coronavirus pandemic - Vox

Flexible Memberships: One of the most important aspects of a coworking space business model is offering flexible memberships. The business must be able to meet the diverse needs of its members, which can range from freelancers working part-time to small businesses looking for a full-time office. Flexible memberships can include daily, weekly, monthly, or annual options, allowing members to choose the membership that best fits their needs. This flexibility helps the coworking space to attract and keep existing clients as well as increase its overall occupancy rate.

Amenities: The next important aspect of a coworking space business model is the provision of high-quality amenities. The availability of fast and reliable internet, printing services, conference rooms, and other amenities is crucial to attracting and keeping members. By providing these services, the coworking space becomes a full office for its members, allowing them to focus on their work without worrying about the convenient business headquarters.

Revenues: The main source of revenue for a coworking space is membership fees. Memberships can range from daily, weekly, monthly, or annual options, and the price of each membership should be based on the number of days of use, the services included, and the location of the space. In addition to membership fees, the coworking space can also generate revenue from meeting room rentals and additional services such as printing and virtual office services. To maximize revenue, it is important to keep occupancy rates high and to continuously evaluate and adjust pricing to ensure that the business is profitable.

Location: The location of a coworking space is a critical aspect of its business model. The space must be accessible and convenient for its members, with good transportation links and nearby amenities. A central location in a bustling business district is ideal as it increases the visibility of the space and makes it more attractive to potential members. Additionally, the location should also have adequate parking facilities, as this can be a deciding factor for many members.

To sum up, I believe that coworking spaces can be a great aid, especially to freshly created businesses, so they can cut costs on expensive rents, and not to worry about establishing the office.

Monthly Subscription Payments for Car’s Extra Features

Reading Time: 3 minutes

An Innovative Solution for Modern Drivers or a way for Car companies to get more money from drivers?

In the past car companies had a simple business model… Produce a great car and then sell it for a fair price to customers. This principle was followed for years up to the 10s of the twenty-first century.

What happened then?

Many ecological issues with naturally aspirated engines that produce huge amounts of carbon footprint and rising gas prices provide car companies to down-size engines and put turbos inside small engines. Until then turbos were well-known for supporting strong engines in sports cars like for example Porsche 911 Turbo, but times changed.

These days, any petrolhead will tell you that those underpowered turbocharged engines are terrible. Right now, we see that these very breakdown vehicles can’t go more than 200,000 kilometers without paying a lot of money for a turbo rebuild or even an engine replacement.

Many people consider that it’s a result of changing the policy of companies from,, We want our cars to be unbreakable for years “ to ,, Pay us frequently for car service, and then maybe you will be able to drive”. That’s an easy deal when the car is well built then the company after selling it to the customer, cannot make a profit in the future from this vehicle.

Car enthusiasts like me began to suspect that companies are doing this just to make more profit. After a few years, we are in 2023 and car companies are going even further with money-making.

In this article, I will tell you something about what divides the opinions of many drivers all over the world.

New vehicles are now equipped with connected features such as heated seats and assisted driving. These extra features can be enabled or disabled by the automaker through a wireless connection to the internet and can be accessed through either a monthly or annual subscription fee, or a one-time charge. This shift presents an opportunity for automakers to increase their revenue, but it also has the potential to anger customers if certain features are locked behind a paid subscription.

According to a report from McKinsey & Co, revenue from connected cars could reach $550 billion by 2030, up from $64 billion in 2020. Automakers like General Motors and Stellantis aim to generate billions from software and services from their connected vehicles. However, a survey conducted by Cox Automotive showed that only 25% of people were willing to pay subscription fees for in-car services. The majority of buyers expect features and services to be part of the total purchase price.

One company that is offering a different approach to connected car upgrades is Polestar. They are offering a $1,595 over-the-air upgrade that adds 68 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque to the Polestar 2 electric car. This upgrade is a one-time purchase and stays with the car, potentially increasing its value. On the other hand, Mercedes-Benz is offering a similar Acceleration Increase option as an annual subscription.

In South Korea, BMW faced backlash when they offered a heated-seat subscription plan for $18 per month. This plan has since been dropped and heated seats will now be enabled from the start.

In addition, it terrifies many people that cars are connected to the network. However, as we see it’s a big deal when a car company can influence features in cars. It’s good to mention that we have seen good and not money-motivated instances provided by Tesla in the past. When an Irma Hurricane was ravaging Florida in 2017, Tesla remotely uploaded some free updates to the cars of their customers to give their cars more mileage range to help them escape an endangered area.

As the shift to connected and autonomous vehicles continues, automakers need to consider their approach to offering extra features and services. A one-time purchase option, like Polestar’s, has the potential to increase customer satisfaction and the value of the vehicle. On the other hand, locking features behind a monthly or annual subscription fee could result in customer frustration. It will be interesting to see how automakers navigate this new landscape and find the right balance between boosting revenue and keeping customers happy.

Novel Carbon Capture System Turns Carbon Into Methanol

Reading Time: 3 minutes
Source: Eric Francavilla, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, https://www.pnnl.gov/news-media/scientists-unveil-least-costly-carbon-capture-system-date

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems are a promising technology for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from power plants and industrial facilities. CO2 is one of the main greenhouse gases responsible for global warming, and reducing emissions from these sources is crucial for achieving global climate goals.

There are two main types of carbon capture systems: post-combustion and pre-combustion. Post-combustion capture involves capturing CO2 after it has been released from the combustion process, while pre-combustion capture captures CO2 before it is released.

Post-combustion capture systems use various technologies, such as amine solvents, to capture CO2 from the flue gas produced by power plants and industrial facilities. The captured CO2 is then compressed and transported to a storage site, typically an underground geological formation. One of the main advantages of post-combustion capture is that it can be retrofitted to existing power plants, allowing for a relatively quick deployment of the technology.

Pre-combustion capture systems, on the other hand, capture CO2 before it is released by converting fossil fuels into a mixture of hydrogen and CO2. The CO2 is then separated and captured, while the hydrogen is used as a fuel. Pre-combustion capture systems are typically more efficient than post-combustion systems, but they require the construction of new power plants or the retrofitting of existing ones.

The cost of carbon capture is a major barrier to the widespread deployment of the technology. However, costs have been decreasing in recent years, and it is expected that they will continue to decrease as the technology is further developed and deployed. Additionally, government policies, such as carbon pricing and subsidies, can help to reduce costs and encourage the deployment of carbon capture systems.

Source: Andrea Starr, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, https://www.pnnl.gov/news-media/scientists-unveil-least-costly-carbon-capture-system-date

A recent breakthrough post-combustion carbon capture system unveiled by the researchers from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory promises to cut those costs significantly by converting the captured carbon into methanol. Methanol being one of the most produced chemicals in the world, utilized in the production of many everyday items such as plastics, paints, construction materials and biofuels.

The sales from the created methanol can generate meaningful revenues for power plants, further decreasing the costs of running carbon capture systems. PNNL scientists believe that this form of carbon recycling, can boost the development and adoption of CCS around the world. The new system is intended to work with the flue gas emitted by coal, gas and, biomass power plants.

Innovation in the carbon capture sector is essential in the fight against climate change. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that CCS could reduce CO2 emissions by up to 10 Gt by 2050, which is equivalent to about one-fifth of the total emissions reduction needed to meet the Paris Agreement targets.

The new carbon capture system created by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory researchers is a promising technology that could play a vital role in the fight against climate change. Its high selectivity, stability, and lower cost of production make it an attractive option for large-scale carbon capture and storage. With further research and development, this technology could become a vital tool in the effort to reduce carbon emissions and slow down the effects of global warming.

Internet, law, and the freedom of speech

What the Left Keeps Getting Wrong About Free Speech

Through all the times big corporations like Twitter, Google were immune to the lawsuits against them regarding the content posted on each of their platforms. However, current legal cases are about to change this.

There are always battles between Republicans and Democrats, between right and left about the censorship on the Internet. Nowadays, the regulations of blocking content are not really understandable for a lot of people. Some unharmful posts can be deleted, while disturbing pictures still remain in place. So, the debates about how to make the Internet field not a paradise, but not hell at the same time, are on the stage.

This summer is considered to be decisive for the companies in the US, thus, in the European Union. The aim of the justices is to review all the existing cases and come with the legislations and systems that would prevent people from posting/seeing disturbing content, while still having a freedom of speech.

One of the most recent lawsuits was made against Twitter. Several antisemitic posts were noticed on the platform, that were indented to attack Jewish people and deny the Holocaust. Those posts breaking the law of Germany (from where they were posted) as well as breaking terms and conditions of Twitter. The users of the platform have expressed their feeling of being betrayed by the company after it was bought by Elon Mask.

Why was this post not deleted if it was violating terms and conditions of the platform?

The answer is rather easy. After Elon Mask’s purchase of Twitter, it was announced that the company is going to loosen rules and will stop banning so much of the content. The Campaign Against Antisemitism that was a close partner to the company said that the ‘laws’ of the firm started to fall apart after the shift of the ownership to the billionaire.

So, now we are approaching one of the biggest and most interesting changes when it comes to the censorship not only on platforms mentioned above, but also all over the Internet. A lot of people think that we should still leave space for the freedom of speech, as we want to build strong democracy, however this can threaten people life’s and feeling of safeness on the Internet.

While on the other side, we have the fact that banning ‘inappropriate’ content, can actually be difficult to implement, as there are no strict limitations of what is good or bad. Additionally, that would threaten one of the fundamental rights – the freedom of speech.

Chat GPT – HOT OR NOT?

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Chat GPT – one of the hottest subjects of last days. It is already used by students, programmers and people across various fields. This artificial intelligence language model developed by OpenAI, was designed to provide human-like text-based conversations. It has gained significant popularity in recent years and is used in various applications such as customer service, language translation, and content creation. The growing interest raises important questions about the advantages and disadvantages of this technology, as well as the latest developments in the field. So, what can we say about them?

One of the most notable advantages of Chat GPT is its ability to provide human-like conversations. The model is trained on a vast amount of text data, which gives it the ability to understand and respond to a wide range of topics and questions. This makes it suitable for use in conversational interfaces, where a human-like response is desired. For example, it can be used to provide customer service through chatbots, or as a language translator for people speaking different languages.

What can we say about its versatility? The model can be trained to perform a wide range of language-related tasks, including question answering, summarization, and text generation. The mentioned versatility makes this AI model useful for a variety of applications, including content creation, language learning, and research. For example, it can be used to generate articles, create personalized learning experiences, or even help researchers study language patterns and behaviors.

Furthermore, it has the ability to continuously improve over time. As more data is fed into the model, it continues to learn and become even more human-like in its responses. This means that the model will become more accurate and capable over time, providing a valuable resource for those using it for various applications.

Moreover, a very exciting development in the field of Chat GPT is the use of the technology in the creative industries. For example, the model has been used to generate music, poetry, and even visual art. This opens up new possibilities for artists and creatives, and it will be interesting to see how the technology evolves and is used in the future.

While it has many advantages, there are also some significant disadvantages to consider. One of the most pressing concerns is the potential for bias in the model. Like any machine learning model, Chat GPT may be susceptible to bias, particularly in its training data. For example, if the training data contains gender or racial stereotypes, the model may reproduce these biases in its responses. This could lead to harmful consequences, such as perpetuating harmful stereotypes or making inaccurate predictions.

Many people are also cocerned about its impact on education. Are students going to be able to think on their own? Is this AI model going to influence their writing skills? Well, these are pretty good questions. Like many other things Chat GPT is only a tool which we can use to increase our efficiency, save time and reach out to in times of creative crisis (who doesn’t hate that?). Maybe we should learn how to use this tool in a way which increases our skills and is not harmful? “Ethan Mollick, an entrepreneurship and innovation professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, told NPR on Thursday that he now requires his students to use ChatGPT to help with their classwork. “This is a tool that’s useful,” Mollick said during the NPR interview. “There’s a lot of positives about it. That doesn’t minimize the fact that cheating and negativity are there, but those have been there for a long time.”  His new AI policy — which NPR reviewed — calls AI usage an “emerging skill.” The policy also states that students must check ChatGPT’s responses and will be held accountable for any inaccuracies that the bot spits out.” (businessinsider.com, Aaron Mok,”A Wharton business school professor is requiring his students to use ChatGPT”). Of course everything is only as useful as we make it. We cannot assume that something is 100% good or bad. It all depends on the way we use it.

What about the limitations? Although the model can provide human-like responses, it may still lack the context and emotional intelligence that a human would have in a conversation. For example, the model may struggle to understand sarcasm or humor, or to respond appropriately to emotionally charged situations. This lack of emotional intelligence can result in awkward or inappropriate responses, which may hinder the effectiveness of the model in certain applications.

Finally, there is a risk of the model being misused for malicious purposes. That’s right. It can be used to spread false information or impersonate people online, which could have serious consequences for individuals and society as a whole. This highlights the need for responsible use of Chat GPT, as well as for ongoing monitoring and regulation of the technology.

Despite these disadvantages, it is an exciting and rapidly developing field, with numerous recent developments worth mentioning. For example, OpenAI recently released a new version, called GPT-3, which has significantly improved language capabilities and has been integrated into various products and services. GPT-3 has received widespread attention, with many experts hailing it as a breakthrough in AI technology.

An exciting development in this field is also the recent release of a model that can generate realistic images. This model can be combined with Chat GPT to create photo-realistic fake news and deepfakes, which could have significant implications for politics, media, and society as a whole. This highlights the need for ongoing research and development in this area.

In the final analysis, it is a powerful and versatile AI model that has many potential applications. From customer service to content creation, the model provides businesses with new opportunities to engage with customers and process large amounts of text data. However, there are also several disadvantages to consider, such as bias and the potential for malicious use. As the technology continues to evolve and improve, it is important that businesses use it responsibly and in accordance with ethical guidelines. The hot news surrounding Chat GPT highlight the exciting potential of this technology and its impact on various industries.
