The light printing technology

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Not a long time ago polish inventors have developed innovative method of producing OLED screens. They have created the cheapest and the thinnest electronic band with OLED screen which is now the biggest innovation in so called the light printing technology.

How it works?

They named it Inuru and it uses Organic Light Emitting Diodes, which is something similar to LEDs but it’s made out of organic components.

OLED display technology which is using organic diodes degrade rapidly therefore it provides a light for only a few seconds or minutes . That’s why it is hard to introduce it on a mass scale. However by creating more and more products Inuru is going to optimise the use of diodes to increase theirs lifetime which allows them to glare a lot longer.

It’s also worth mentioning that this solution is sustainable and ecological. Inuru does not use heavy metals or heavy ions. Also the materials are similar to those used right now, that means this tech is fully recyclable.

The ideas of use:

Because of the display being so thin there are no limitations to it’s use. For example you can print it onto clothes so that the display shines if someone hugs you. This technology is also meant to help people, the idea is to combine the diodes with the labels on the medicine to indicate when it expires. We could spend hours and hours thinking about the applications but the most interesting aspect is changing the way of advertising products.

Changes in adverts

Personally I think the biggest changes will be seen in the way of promoting products by multiple companies. Since the great economic development every one of them want to be the best in the marketing. Now when the Inuru is on the market a lot of companies started to make some initial projects. One of the first corporation to cooperate with Inuru creators is Coca Cola. They have created the first label to use on bottles and it looks like that:

They are planning to use such labels on special edition bottles. In my point of view think there will be more and more products using this technology because it surely attracts the eye of the customer and that’s what companies are looking for.

Video

To get the better understanding of Inuru technology i recommend you watching this video. Unfortunatelly it’s in polish but you can add english subtitles. Let me know what are your thoughts and ideas were you would use that technology.

Lab-grown meat – protein of the future or an unattainable dream?

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Imagine this: You wake up. It’s a Sunday, middle of December, the Sun is shining and it’s snowy outside. You need to eat something. Something tasty. Something that you can savor with each bite. Something that satisfies each and every taste bud on your tongue. So, you open the fridge, and suddenly, it hits you: it’s time to bring out the classic. Scrambled eggs with bacon. The king of America’s tabletops each morning. The all-time favourite. What a fantastic start to start to the day!

Now, consider where the bacon you just took out from the fridge came from.

It used to be a cute little piglet not that long ago – it had been born, fed, raised, and killed mercilessly to end up on a supermarket shelf with a price tag.

Quite a dark story, huh?

Now, what if you could enjoy all the taste of meat, without the need to kill a living being?

That’s the premise of cultured meat.

The breakfast you’ve just had
source: https://www.reddit.com/r/Pigtures/comments/8h7j4l/cute_piglet/

Cultured meat is defined by the Good Food Institute as “genuine animal meat (…) that is produced by cultivating animal cells directly.” What is more, the claim is that “this production method eliminates the need to raise and farm animals for food”.[1]

We can find first mentions of the concept as early as 1931, when Winston Churchill stated that “We shall escape the absurdity of growing a whole chicken to eat the breast or wing, by growing these parts separately under a suitable medium”.[2]

The idea of artificial production of meat was elaborated on in 2005 by in P. D. Edelman’s PubMed publication.[3] He noted that people are becoming more and more aware of the unfair use of animals in farming, and that there are growing concerns over nutrition-related diseases associated to animal products.

Edelman suggested that in-vitro synthesis of muscle fibers could solve most of such issues, and potentially drive down the cost of meat production.

The idea of ‘humane meat’ is backed by many, with the most common arguments for it being:

  • antibiotic-free production;[4]
  • lower usage of water and land, lower greenhouse emissions;[5]
  • no need to kill animals in the process.

The enthusiasm behind the technology is quite clear – since the first lab-grown burger has been premiered by Mark Post back in 2013,[6] the industry has grown to getting over 1.2 billion dollars in investments in 2020.[7]

What is more, tech giants are pushing for a widespread introduction of such a technology, with Bill Gates stating that “Rich nations should shift entirely to synthetic beef”.[8]

Labiotech stated that “the commercialization of cultured meat in Europe and the US seems inevitable.”

Just over 2 years ago, Singapore became the first country to legalize commercial sales of cultured meat – an industry leader called Eat Just has been selling synthetic chicken nuggets in the country ever since.

While the idea might sound like the perfect solution to all of humanity’s meat-related problems, we’ve seen some beef (pun absolutely intended) between the industry’s pioneers and certain market analysts.

For one, Paul Wood (served as executive director of global discovery for Pfizer Animal Health) is quite skeptical of the concept. He says that at this moment, it doesn’t seem feasible to use such costly biotechnology to drive down the costs of meat.[9]

The current situation in the industry doesn’t seem too advanced either – we’re only growing one type of tissue (e.g., muscle fibers) in a single Petri dish – thus, we cannot exactly replicate the exact animal cuts used for steaks or fillets. As a result, the main consumption of lab meat lies in blended products – nuggets and burgers.

As of today, the cost of lab meat production is very high (up to 15 000 $ per kg of foie gras)[10], though we’ve seen a major reduction in prices over the past decade – Mosa Meat has reported an 88x decline in production costs.[11]

Nevertheless, the future of lab-grown meat seems bright, with proposals of merging plant foods with cultivated muscle fibers and fat cells to create a hybrid product being put forward. As per CE Delft’s Techno-Economic Analysis, there is a prospect of a 4000-fold cost reduction in 9 years.[12]

As per the taste of such meat – the presentation in 2013 was a success – with culinary critic Hanni Rützler rating the consistency as “perfect”.

So, the next time you are frying your bacon on a cold December morning – think about the future. Would you consider trying lab-grown meat? Do you think that humans can develop technology good enough to replace slaughterhouses with laboratories? Let me know your thoughts in a comment.

Until next time,

The new era in communication beetwen pilots and ATC controllers

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Since the beginning of aviation communication between pilots and ATC controllers takes place by an use of radio waves. Currently there are only 2280 frequencies of communication. However due to the constant increase in air traffic it’s not enough, they have become congested and cumbersome in communication.

But what has really changed?

Nowadays despite traditional way of voice communication pilots and controllers have an option of using system called CPDLC what stands for Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications. It is a two-way data-link system by which controllers can transmit non urgent but strategic messages such as: level change, speed assignments, vectoring and many other various requests of information. It is also dedicated for ground services to communicate about technical things. For instance pilot can ask ground control on the destination airport for an additional services during a stop on an airport tarmac. The Main purpose of that system is to reduce the workload of controllers by letting them execute frequent commands without occupying a frequency. In initial experiments it is believed that about 84% of voice communication has been reduced.

But how it actually works?

It involves the use of pre-formatted messages which allows both pilots and controllers to send messages. The use pre-formatted options increase the efficiency and also reduces the chance for an error. In addition to that there is also a free text option so that any other information’s or requests can be made.

Putting it simply, if the pilot wants to change altitude to a higher flight level he would need to ask it for on a radio earlier. Currently he just has to press a few buttons and then wait for a controller to allow or refuse him to do so.

The advantages of CPDLC

Each system is made for some purpose. The main idea of CPDLC is to help controllers manage the air traffic so that they workload will be reduced. The advantages that CPDLC provides are:

  • Increased ATC efficiency by reducing the workload
  • A reduction in possible misunderstandings due to language barriers
  • The possibility of a few communications at the same time thereby increasing speed of it
  • Sending the same command to multiple planes at the same time

Concerns about safety

Of course there are also some concerns about using this system such as giving for example two commands for one plane at the same time in separate messages which might cause that one of them won’t be seen by pilots. Also the use of CPDLC reduces pilot’s awareness, because they cannot follow other aircraft communication. Last but not least there is always an option to send wrong message to an aircraft or transmit it to the wrong one. However all of that problems are not really an issue if properly addressed.

If you want to learn something more feel free to ask any questions connected with aviation. I also recommend you watching this short video to get the better understanding about this system.

VR is on a new level. Emerge Home allows a tactile experience.

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Nowadays, VR techs are actively developing and in the next article one of such cutting-edge technologies will be described. The Emerge Home system is a breakthrough, which allows you not only to immerse yourself in the world of virtual reality and metaverses but also to feel the inner virtual space with bare hands. It is not just a VR set that allows you to see the 3D objects in the virtual worlds or games, but also to interact with them, to sense their shape, and help the user to get as much VR experience as possible, transporting him or her into the virtual world with just a few clicks.

The Emerge Home system is currently at the development stage, and its VR kit consists of two main tech components and a mobile application.

How does everything work?

The first tech component that helps the user to enlarge his VR experience is a VR headset (Emerge Home Quest 2 app).

The second component is the Emerge Wave-1 desktop device that conveys a physical experience with breakthrough technology. Sculpted ultrasonic waves on the surface of the system create a field in the air up to three feet above the device itself and allow users to interact with virtual objects. Moreover, the system itself is similar in size to a thirteen-inch laptop.

For the final step, the user has to install a dedicated Emerge Home mobile app, which allows him or her to connect the devices, customize the avatar and set a Center environment. Moreover, this application is capable of sending messages, creating rooms, and inviting your friends before gathering in the metaverse.

Based on research conducted by the National Research Group, It can be concluded that more than half of potential customers (78% of respondents) claim that when communicating with people virtually, they lack the opportunity of physical contact, and this cutting-edge VR system can significantly improve the situation.

However, there is a high risk that, in the nearest future, live communication, which is an important factor in human interactions, will be replaced by such kinds of technologies.

Any breakthrough in science is valuable. Some people may find it useful, while others may see it as technology that brings more harm. However, Emerge’s expertise can help the science and progress of virtual reality, and not only facilitate human interaction but also lead to new innovations that follow.

DRONE PROTECTION SYSTEM

Reading Time: 2 minutesOver past years, drones evolved from an underdeveloped dream to highly advanced tool that is widely available. As a result, many companies thought of different ways to implement drones to their businesses. The new idea brought by Amazon or UPS is being able to deliver goods using drone technology. Undoubtedly, this project seems to be a huge step forward of delivery service. Nonetheless, Nirupam Roy and Nakul Garg, a pair of engineers at the University of Maryland, are afraid that drone deliveries will be frequent target of vandalism. As we know, a well-aimed stone or tennis ball can easily take a drone down. Therefore, the men decided to build a lightweight self-defence mechanism which lets a drone get out of the way of missile.

Dr Roy and Mr Garg think that they can replace power-hungry radar antennae or spinning lidar units by harnesses sound waves and the Doppler effect. The pair plan to equip drones with diminutive loudspeakers which would broadcast an ultrasonic tone outward from the drone. Also, those tiny microphones would listen for reflection for incoming objects. All those actions would give a chance to recognise the incoming threat and thus permit the drone to get out of its way.

Dr Roy and Mr Garg called their new invention DopplerDodge drone defence system. To test it, they have been throwing objects of various sizes at it and found out that system detects objects from distances of up to four metres away. However, the two researchers will attempt to raise the detection range to 30 meters, what will make drones impossible to hit by any irritated neighbour.

FLIP PHONES ARE BACK?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Designer Kristian Ulrich Larsen introduced a Flip phone with triple display.Flashy Flip phone will collapse in your pocket and have three flexible AMOLED touchscreens with power of Android.

In its triangular position (seen over), the telephone lays on level surfaces exquisitely, suggestive of a bedside morning timer. Be that as it may, in the event that you don’t have plans to dream of electric sheep at any point in the near future, the Flip can move into a slimmer adaptation of itself, crumbling and hiding one of its three super AMOLED screens between the external two.

Every one of the Flip’s three sides are associated by steel work joins, so snapping it separated comes as no simple accomplishment. Furthermore, on the off chance that you absentmindedly happen to sit on the telephone, the Gorilla Glass screen will safe it from your inattention.

Beside the curiosity of your telephone having the option to serve as a blossom container – truly, watch the implanted video beneath – the Flip’s plan tends to enough down to earth cell phone client issues to make it a captivating item idea. For a certain something, the Flip’s capacity to transform starting with one shape then onto the next could prove to be useful, state, when you want to peruse a digital book on a real double sided, open-confronted surface.

Or on the other hand in the event that you want to chip away at a minuscule looking workstation, you can flip one screen up to a 90 degree resting position and type away on the LED-sponsored console. What’s more, with the forward looking camcorder, moving the Flip go into the triangular shape implies sans hands video visiting.

And what is your opinion about this kind of phone? Share your opinion in comments 🙂

The Perfect Wave

Reading Time: 3 minutesRelated image

Escaping the cold December noons, you travel to the Hawaii Pipeline. The beach, renowned for its waves, is gleaming in the sunshine. You feel the light breeze of salty water on your cheek and vitamin D soaking into your skin. Having your best holidays, you decide to try this perfect blend of warm water and high waves. You stand on your surfboard and try your skills in the ocean.

But this scenario is usually far from reachable. Not only does surfing is highly costly, but also, as the weather is often unpredictable, it can be hard to find high waves. In Europe, the cost generating factor is mostly the absence of ocean that can create such waves as we can observe in Hawaii or Africa. Even assuming that we have the money for such travel, we cannot be sure for 100% that our journey will satisfy our surfing cravings due to the, for example, lack of wind. To fight with both of these factors and raise the popularity of surfing across the globe, Kelly Slater, an eleven-time world champion in surfing, came up with an idea to create a perfect wave machine.

Image result for kelly slater surfing

In 2009, this surfing legend with a spark of creativity and lust for a groundbreaking change to the surfing industry teamed up with the University of Southern California’s professor, Adam Fincham, to find the perfect wave. Inspired by an iconic movie, The Endless Summer, they began working on outsmarting nature and came up with a ring-shaped lake in which the wave endlessly went around the center. But Slater’s idea was to create a rectangular pool that would perfectly imitate the ocean’s atmosphere and skills needed. Studying complex mathematics to find a formula that can crack the geophysical fluid dynamics, in 2015, they invented The Kelly’s Wave. In the middle of California’s country, they set up Surf Ranch and started disrupting the surfing industry.

Image result for kelly slater's wave poolRelated image

In this approximately 2,000 feet long and 500 feet wide pool, the artificial wave is created by a unique system of hydrofoils. The pool is filled with 15 million gallons of UV-and-chlorine-treated freshwater, and the main 100-ton hydrofoil is named “The Vehicle.” Running down a track with the help of more than 150 truck tires, it has the ability to create 6.5 foot-tall waves, which run at about 30 kilometers per hour. Of course, for beginners, you can adjust the height of the stream and its speed to provide them with a safe and enjoyable experience. This invention astonished The World Surf League (WSL), and they are currently the most significant stakeholder in his Kelly Slater Wave Company. Furthermore, from 2019, you can participate in the Freshwater Pro Championships held at the Surf Farm led by the World Surfing Team and WSL.

The truth is that Kelly’s wave changed the surfing industry, and, in spite of the numerous wave pools created, Slater’s one is the best in history. Outsmarting nature, the technology behind it enables surfers to create a contest or just enjoy the sport without even thinking about the weather. But this invention also divided surfers into two groups – one that admires surfing because of its search for a wave, vibing with nature and the “perfect imperfections” of the ocean’s dynamics, and the other one that is more focused on the skills, adjusting techniques and making surfing mainstream.

Connectivity of tomorrow

Reading Time: 3 minutes

5G NETWORK

Well, the curiosity is over, 5G technology is expected to hit the market in 2020. In this blog, we will read about how 5G will bring advancement in the internet of things devices and what exactly does this new technology offers us.

5G is a multi-service network, that is able to adapt a whole host of devices: smartphones of course, but also enhanced 360° content and augmented reality, connected objects, fridges, driverless cars. 5G technology will change the way we live, work, and play-for good. It promises to greatly enhance the speed, Verizon’s network showed speeds surging past 1 gigabit per second.

But why everybody is talking of its great influence on modern people lives? One of the benefits is something called low latency. You’ll hear this term a lot. Latency is time between clicking on link or start streaming a video, which sending the request up to network, and delivering you the site or playing your video, when the network responds. With current network this time is about 20 milliseconds, but with 5G it reduces to 1 milliseconds. Also, the literally incredible think about new generation network is that it is designed to connect a far greater number of devices than a traditional cellular network does. 5G can multiple devices around you, whether it’s a dog collar or a refrigerator; it is also specifically built to handle equipment  used by business, such as farm equipment or ATMs.

One of advantages of new network are, as i believe, that 5G can make a big profit for rural and suburban areas that have not enjoyed the same access to wireless as cities; in health industry: hospitals will not only be able to remotely diagnose a patient’s complaints, but they will also have the ability to remotely perform surgeries and other hands-on procedures using digital avatars; environment: connected devices will transform data on weather conditions, plant health, crop health, moisture, mineral and chemical levels, pest presence and more, affecting labor allocation, cost management, waste reduction and yield; smart cities: IoT sensors will monitor and collect data on everything from air quality, to energy use, to traffic patterns. 5G will be able to use artificial intelligence to analyze the massive amounts of data being collected to automate processes that are currently done manually.

Can’t I just pick up 5G with my existing smartphone?

Sorry, no. 5G technology requires a specific set of antennas to tap into specific bands. For instance, Sprint’s LG V50 is specifically tuned for its 5G network. Likewise, the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G is tuned for Verizon’s network and its millimeter wave spectrum. You can expect more 5G phones to launch later this year, with phones able to ride on different networks coming out in mass in 2020.

Samsung Galaxy S10 5G

How broadly will 5G be available in 2019?

Here’s the other concern: 5G might still be only a theoretical possibility for a lot of people.

T-mobile says it’s launching in 30 cities this year, AT&T will have 22 cities. But it’s unclear how wide the coverage will be. Globally, China, Japan and South Korea are racing to build out their 5G networks, with Europe turning on its own 5G network now. So don’t feel like you need to rush out to buy that first 5G smartphone. Chances are, service won’t be widely available until 2020 or beyond.

So, how do you feel about inevitable changes in our generation and world? Do you agree, that 5G will change it?

BOSTON DYNAMIC’S ROBOT DOGS MADE THEIR WAY INTO POLICE WORK

Reading Time: 2 minutes

If you’re familiar with sci-fi anthology series called Black Mirror, you might think of one of the episodes from the 5th season titled “Metalhead”. Apparently, it’s not a fiction anymore, it’s our today’s reality.

The robot dog named Spot is an invention that Boston Dynamics started first developing out of MIT. According to the state’s nonprofit branch called American Civil Libertie Union, these robots are now working with the Massachusetts State Police’s bomb squad.
The ACLU  accessed a memo of agreement document between the state and Boston Dynamics through a public records request.
The request letter that the organization wrote in the records is the following: “The ACLU is interested in this subject and seeks to learn more about how your agency uses or has contemplated using robotics.”.
The ACLU collected all the valuable information about the new partnership, including that Boston Dynamics leased the Spot robot dog to the police force for 90 days between August and November. Because there is no detailed information revealed for a public eye, we don’t know how they are exactly using these machines. The only information that a state police spokesman David Procopio provided about Spot is:  “for the purpose of evaluating the robot’s capabilities in law enforcement applications, particularly remote inspection of potentially dangerous environments.”.
Michael Perry, Boston Dynamics vice president of business development stated, that the company is aiming to make Spot useful for different areas like oil and gas companies, constructions or entertainment.
Perry said he anticipates, that the police is using Spot by sending it into areas that are too dangerous for human being.

The abovementioned robot dogs are constructed for a general-purpose. They have an open application programming interface, which means, a warehouse operator or in this case, a police department can customize them with their own software. From what we can read on the internet, State police claims they didn’t use that feature yet.
Even though, Perry claims the robot won’t be used in the way that would harm or intimidate people, the ACLU, as well as the internet community, are worried about the situation. Currently, the major issue is the lack of transparency in the overall robotics program.

There are various conspiracy theories made by netizens. They mostly predict worst-case scenarios.
The question is whether this invention is safe for the human race. But let’s face the truth. Everything could be dangerous if used in the wrong way. If people working on these machines will program the algorithm allowing them to shoot to people, they’ll follow the order.
Personally, I’m amazed and don’t really know which adjective to use other than “amazing” in this case. I applaud Boston Dynamics for creating the algorithms of their breathtaking machines.

To disrupt the way health is monitored

Reading Time: 3 minutesAfter battling it out on Centre Stage, the audience cast their final votes. A moment of waiting and… we have it! Congratulations to Nutrix, who were crowned on Centre Stage at Web Summit 2019 tech conference this week, for their innovative solution to measuring glucose in the blood without needles.

Maria Hahn, CEO & Founder of Nutrix, receiving the main prize at Web Summit 2019
Source: https://portugalinews.eu/web-summit-announces-nutrix-as-pitch-winner/

Diabetes prevalence

Firstly, we will look at the data. It is estimated that 415 million people are living with diabetes in the world, which is estimated to be 1 in 11 of the world’s adult population. 46% of people with diabetes are undiagnosed. The forecast is as follows: the figure is expected to rise to 642 million people living with diabetes worldwide by 2040.

Nutrix’s vision

This year’s winner of Web Summit PITCH, powered by Siemens is going to disrupt the way health is monitored. Today it is only when you are unwell that you get the information from your doctor. Nutrix wants to give the people a chance to monitor this before.

Nutrix

Future of glucose monitoring

Currently, Nutrix is developing a high tech nanosensor that is placed on the tooth which detects glucose level in the saliva and transfers information to an external app. Nutrix is invisible, non-invasive, and patient-friendly. Additionally, it will track food intake and provide valuable information for the patient and artificial pancreas algorithms.

Nutrix’s nanosensor technology
Source: https://nutrix.tech/

Progress and development

Nutrix is being incubated at University Children’s Hospital Basel and developed at CSEM lab a private, non-profit Swiss research and technology organization.

Advantages

It is not the mere fact of monitoring blood glucose that arouses the greatest enthusiasm. It turns out that you can control the level of other chemicals in the same way. The technology proposed by the startup becomes useful not only for people who are sick and their lives depend on the level of specific substances in the blood. It is also an effective way to control the compounds consumed every day.

Correct blood sugar is important not just for diabetics. Fluctuations in blood sugar levels can contribute to weight gain and fat deposits all over the body. Therefore, it is a mistake to think that glucose levels should be controlled only by those who have diabetes.

So we get to the point where we can confidently say that the use of Nutrix is an effective way to prevent civilization diseases.

Finally, Nutrix has a long-term vision that goes further than just glucose. This is their current focus, but ultimately the company wants to go into how to monitor the reaction of the immune system.

Diabetes and the environment

There are more advantages. Blood glucose test strips are the basic equipment of every diabetic. The strips are used for self-monitoring of blood glucose. They are used once and then discarded.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, lancets are medical wastes called sharps. Sharps can be dangerous to that handling garbage if they are thrown in the regular trash. What is more, many people do not pay attention to the safe disposal of their medical waste. The use of a nanosensor eliminates the need for strips and reduces harmful effects on the environment.

Cost-effectiveness

An additional advantage of eliminating the need to use measuring instruments is not only the reduction of harmful effects on the environment. The less intrusive (read needleless) device will be sold at half the price of existing devices.

Invisible, non-invasive, patient-friendly. Good for the Earth and still less costly. There is nothing else to do but observe how Nutrix revolutionizes medicine. Soon, checking how many chemicals you ate during the day will be a matter of opening the app.

Can you imagine all of that data on your mobile device’s screen without the need of doing blood tests?
